इ॒दमि॒त्था रौद्रं॑ गू॒र्तव॑चा॒ ब्रह्म॒ क्रत्वा॒ शच्या॑म॒न्तरा॒जौ । क्रा॒णा यद॑स्य पि॒तरा॑ मंहने॒ष्ठाः पर्ष॑त्प॒क्थे अह॒न्ना स॒प्त होतॄ॑न्
idamitthā raudraṃ gūrtavacā brahma kratvā śacyāmantarājau krāṇā yadasya pitarā maṃhaneṣṭhāḥ parṣatpakthe ahannā sapta hotṝn
Thus with a fierce voice they uttered a powerful hymn, the priests and chiefs in the royal hall; the fathers’ harsh ones, the sacrificers, stood up—seven priests performed the offering.

sa iddānāya dabhyāya vanvañcyavānaḥ sūdairamimīta vedim tūrvayāṇo gūrtavacastamaḥ kṣodo na reta itaūti siñcat
He then, for the offering, yoked the sacrificial steeds, the hunter-hero, and poured the libation into this ritual vessel; with loud cries the priests stirred it, and hunger did not touch the seed of life.

mano na yeṣu havaneṣu tigmaṃ vipaḥ śacyā vanutho dravantā ā yaḥ śaryābhistuvinṛmṇo asyāśrīṇītādiśaṃ gabhastau
Minds that in the rites sharpened the sacred fire—men with chant and branch bringing offerings—come, O you who bear arrows and sing praise; to him whose prosperity is led by this praise may strength be given.

kṛṣṇā yadgoṣvaruṇīṣu sīdaddivo napātāśvinā huve vām vītaṃ me yajñamā gataṃ me annaṃ vavanvāṃsā neṣamasmṛtadhrū
When the black one sat among the strong kine, the two steeds, not fallen, the Ashvins were invoked leftward; my sacrifice has gone forth, my food is established, remember these gathered ones as steadfast.

प्रथि॑ष्ट॒ यस्य॑ वी॒रक॑र्ममि॒ष्णदनु॑ष्ठितं॒ नु नर्यो॒ अपौ॑हत् । पुन॒स्तदा वृ॑हति॒ यत्क॒नाया॑ दुहि॒तुरा अनु॑भृतमन॒र्वा
prathiṣṭa yasya vīrakarmamiṣṇadanuṣṭhitaṃ nu naryo apauhat punastadā vṛhati yatkanāyā duhiturā anubhṛtamanarvā
He who established heroic deeds, that rite performed, did not diminish men; thereafter the mighty one grew, as the offspring were milked by the daughters, the river flowed with abundance.

madhyā yatkartvamabhavadabhīke kāmaṃ kṛṇvāne pitari yuvatyām manānagreto jahaturviyantā sānau niṣiktaṃ sukṛtasya yonau
In the midst what was done was for the ancestral maiden; making desire they gave it to the sire in youth; they who accepted mind cast it away—the two placed the righteous deed’s seed in the well-born womb.

पि॒ता यत्स्वां दु॑हि॒तर॑मधि॒ष्कन्क्ष्म॒या रेतः॑ संजग्मा॒नो नि षि॑ञ्चत् । स्वा॒ध्यो॑ऽजनय॒न्ब्रह्म॑ दे॒वा वास्तो॒ष्पतिं॑ व्रत॒पां निर॑तक्षन्
pitā yatsvāṃ duhitaramadhiṣkankṣmayā retaḥ saṃjagmāno ni ṣiñcat svādhyo'janayanbrahma devā vāstoṣpatiṃ vratapāṃ niratakṣan
The father, having mingled his seed above his daughter with gentle restraint, sprinkled it; the gods brought forth sacred speech, the priests invoked the lord of rites, celebrating the vow.

स ईं॒ वृषा॒ न फेन॑मस्यदा॒जौ स्मदा परै॒दप॑ द॒भ्रचे॑ताः । सर॑त्प॒दा न दक्षि॑णा परा॒वृङ्न ता नु मे॑ पृश॒न्यो॑ जगृभ्रे
sa īṃ vṛṣā na phenamasyadājau smadā paraidapa dabhracetāḥ saratpadā na dakṣiṇā parāvṛṅna tā nu me pṛśanyo jagṛbhre
May this bull not foam away his milk; may the honoured milker give it to me; let not the right foot turn it elsewhere—may the strong ones take my share.

म॒क्षू न वह्निः॑ प्र॒जाया॑ उप॒ब्दिर॒ग्निं न न॒ग्न उप॑ सीद॒दूधः॑ । सनि॑ते॒ध्मं सनि॑तो॒त वाजं॒ स ध॒र्ता ज॑ज्ञे॒ सह॑सा यवी॒युत्
makṣū na vahniḥ prajāyā upabdiragniṃ na nagna upa sīdadūdhaḥ sanitedhmaṃ sanitota vājaṃ sa dhartā jajñe sahasā yavīyut
Fire is not greedy for offspring, it does not take up the cattle naked; steadfast is the sacrificial flame, steadfast the prize—he who bears it wins swiftly with strength.

makṣū kanāyāḥ sakhyaṃ navagvā ṛtaṃ vadanta ṛtayuktimagman dvibarhaso ya upa gopamāguradakṣiṇāso acyutā dudukṣan
The friends of the maidens spoke in new counsel about cosmic order; the two-armed invoked the protector, rightward they sang, the unfallen ones praised mightily.

makṣū kanāyāḥ sakhyaṃ navīyo rādho na reta ṛtamitturaṇyan śuci yatte rekṇa āyajanta sabardughāyāḥ paya usriyāyāḥ
The friends of the maidens, newly joyous, did not lack seed, they passed the rite and pressed pure offerings; they prepared milk and clarified butter for the pressing.

paśvā yatpaścā viyutā budhanteti bravīti vaktarī rarāṇaḥ vasorvasutvā kāravo'nehā viśvaṃ viveṣṭi draviṇamupa kṣu
When the beasts that had been loosed at the rear were counted, the herald spoke: wealth and riches, O kine, fill the world with possessions and bestow sustenance.

तदिन्न्व॑स्य परि॒षद्वा॑नो अग्मन्पु॒रू सद॑न्तो नार्ष॒दं बि॑भित्सन् । वि शुष्ण॑स्य॒ संग्र॑थितमन॒र्वा वि॒दत्पु॑रुप्रजा॒तस्य॒ गुहा॒ यत्
tadinnvasya pariṣadvāno agmanpurū sadanto nārṣadaṃ bibhitsan vi śuṣṇasya saṃgrathitamanarvā vidatpuruprajātasya guhā yat
Then around the assembly the people advanced, fierce with ritual, fearing the naked breach; the interior chambers of the populous city opened where the pressed offerings lay.

भर्गो॑ ह॒ नामो॒त यस्य॑ दे॒वाः स्व१॒॑र्ण ये त्रि॑षध॒स्थे नि॑षे॒दुः । अ॒ग्निर्ह॒ नामो॒त जा॒तवे॑दाः श्रु॒धी नो॑ होतरृ॒तस्य॒ होता॒ध्रुक्
bhargo ha nāmota yasya devāḥ sva1rṇa ye triṣadhasthe niṣeduḥ agnirha nāmota jātavedāḥ śrudhī no hotarṛtasya hotādhruk
The name is Bhargo, by which the gods settled in the golden place where the threefold ones took their seat. Agni is the name given to the born-knower; hear our invoker who upholds the ritual.

उ॒त त्या मे॒ रौद्रा॑वर्चि॒मन्ता॒ नास॑त्याविन्द्र गू॒र्तये॒ यज॑ध्यै । म॒नु॒ष्वद्वृ॒क्तब॑र्हिषे॒ ररा॑णा म॒न्दू हि॒तप्र॑यसा वि॒क्षु यज्यू॑
uta tyā me raudrāvarcimantā nāsatyāvindra gūrtaye yajadhyai manuṣvadvṛktabarhiṣe rarāṇā mandū hitaprayasā vikṣu yajyū
May that glorious Rudra-like splendour come to me with priestly might for worship and invocation; let the singers with sacrificial staff behold kindly and offer hymns with generous purpose.

अ॒यं स्तु॒तो राजा॑ वन्दि वे॒धा अ॒पश्च॒ विप्र॑स्तरति॒ स्वसे॑तुः । स क॒क्षीव॑न्तं रेजय॒त्सो अ॒ग्निं ने॒मिं न च॒क्रमर्व॑तो रघु॒द्रु
ayaṃ stuto rājā vandi vedhā apaśca viprastarati svasetuḥ sa kakṣīvantaṃ rejayatso agniṃ nemiṃ na cakramarvato raghudru
This celebrated king I praise; the seers and wise men spread the sacred fences; he made thrive the famed Agni, the law and the wheel of the ransom—he is Raghudru.

स द्वि॒बन्धु॑र्वैतर॒णो यष्टा॑ सब॒र्धुं धे॒नुम॒स्वं॑ दु॒हध्यै॑ । सं यन्मि॒त्रावरु॑णा वृ॒ञ्ज उ॒क्थैर्ज्येष्ठे॑भिरर्य॒मणं॒ वरू॑थैः
sa dvibandhurvaitaraṇo yaṣṭā sabardhuṃ dhenumasvaṃ duhadhyai saṃ yanmitrāvaruṇā vṛñja ukthairjyeṣṭhebhiraryamaṇaṃ varūthaiḥ
He, the two-brothered sacrificer, milked the cow with all her calves; Mitra and Varuna, with their older hymns and rites, yoked the prosperous pair.

तद्ब॑न्धुः सू॒रिर्दि॒वि ते॑ धियं॒धा नाभा॒नेदि॑ष्ठो रपति॒ प्र वेन॑न् । सा नो॒ नाभिः॑ पर॒मास्य वा॑ घा॒हं तत्प॒श्चा क॑ति॒थश्चि॑दास
tadbandhuḥ sūrirdivi te dhiyaṃdhā nābhānediṣṭho rapati pra venan sā no nābhiḥ paramāsya vā ghāhaṃ tatpaścā katithaścidāsa
That bond was a shining hero; he placed intellect in heaven and made the navel stand firm. May she take our navel’s highest place, may she bear that whey — then the assembled ones rejoice.

इ॒यं मे॒ नाभि॑रि॒ह मे॑ स॒धस्थ॑मि॒मे मे॑ दे॒वा अ॒यम॑स्मि॒ सर्वः॑ । द्वि॒जा अह॑ प्रथम॒जा ऋ॒तस्ये॒दं धे॒नुर॑दुह॒ज्जाय॑माना
iyaṃ me nābhiriha me sadhasthamime me devā ayamasmi sarvaḥ dvijā aha prathamajā ṛtasyedaṃ dhenuraduhajjāyamānā
This navel is mine, this place is mine; I stand in the seat — I am that all‑encompassing god. Twice‑born, firstborn of Rta, this cow was born to be milked.

अधा॑सु म॒न्द्रो अ॑र॒तिर्वि॒भावाव॑ स्यति द्विवर्त॒निर्व॑ने॒षाट् । ऊ॒र्ध्वा यच्छ्रेणि॒र्न शिशु॒र्दन्म॒क्षू स्थि॒रं शे॑वृ॒धं सू॑त मा॒ता
adhāsu mandro aratirvibhāvāva syati dvivartanirvaneṣāṭ ūrdhvā yacchreṇirna śiśurdanmakṣū sthiraṃ śevṛdhaṃ sūta mātā
Below, the slow adversity will become a shining manifestation; two‑fold order will arise from the wilderness. Above, let what is in the lap not be a suckling; establish steady increase, O mother, make it grow.

अधा॒ गाव॒ उप॑मातिं क॒नाया॒ अनु॑ श्वा॒न्तस्य॒ कस्य॑ चि॒त्परे॑युः । श्रु॒धि त्वं सु॑द्रविणो न॒स्त्वं या॑ळाश्व॒घ्नस्य॑ वावृधे सू॒नृता॑भिः
adhā gāva upamātiṃ kanāyā anu śvāntasya kasya citpareyuḥ śrudhi tvaṃ sudraviṇo nastvaṃ yāḷāśvaghnasya vāvṛdhe sūnṛtābhiḥ
Below the cows gave an example: the girl followed the mare, for whose sake they strove. Hear, you of abundant wealth, you are not he who slays the swift horse; restrain the boasting tongues.

Here, O Indra, know us as great for the realm, O king with thunderous arm. Guard us from the powerful; protect the heroes, O Maruts, for your desire.

adha yadrājānā gaviṣṭau saratsaraṇyuḥ kārave jaraṇyuḥ vipraḥ preṣṭhaḥ sa hyeṣāṃ babhūva parā ca vakṣaduta parṣadenān
When the kings came to the cattle, the herds streamed together; the wise foremost of them became supreme and spoke forth to the council.

adhā nvasya jenyasya puṣṭau vṛthā rebhanta īmahe tadū nu saraṇyurasya sūnuraśvo vipraścāsi śravasaśca sātau
Beneath him, in the honored one’s nurture, we vainly tightened these; now indeed of that — for his refuge, his son, the steed — O brahmans you have heard, and the renowned ones sit together.

यु॒वोर्यदि॑ स॒ख्याया॒स्मे शर्धा॑य॒ स्तोमं॑ जुजु॒षे नम॑स्वान् । वि॒श्वत्र॒ यस्मि॒न्ना गिरः॑ समी॒चीः पू॒र्वीव॑ गा॒तुर्दाश॑त्सू॒नृता॑यै
yuvoryadi sakhyāyāsme śardhāya stomaṃ jujuṣe namasvān viśvatra yasminnā giraḥ samīcīḥ pūrvīva gāturdāśatsūnṛtāyai
If you are my friend, desire praise and accept salutations. For I am the all‑spreading voice; may the ancient hymn go forward for the offspring of the giver.

sa gṛṇāno adbhirdevavāniti subandhurnamasā sūktaiḥ vardhadukthairvacobhirā hi nūnaṃ vyadhvaiti payasa usriyāyāḥ
He honored the wondrous gods with hymns and obeisances; with growing hymns of speech they indeed made abundant the streams of milk for the swift ones.

त ऊ॒ षु णो॑ म॒हो य॑जत्रा भू॒त दे॑वास ऊ॒तये॑ स॒जोषाः॑ । ये वाजा॒ँ अन॑यता वि॒यन्तो॒ ये स्था नि॑चे॒तारो॒ अमू॑राः
ta ū ṣu ṇo maho yajatrā bhūta devāsa ūtaye sajoṣāḥ ye vājām̐ anayatā viyanto ye sthā nicetāro amūrāḥ
Then indeed the great sacrificers, when the gods were invoked for the invocation, rejoiced. Those who yoked the steeds departed; the lowly‑minded remained senseless.
