र॒क्षो॒हणं॑ वा॒जिन॒मा जि॑घर्मि मि॒त्रं प्रथि॑ष्ठ॒मुप॑ यामि॒ शर्म॑ । शिशा॑नो अ॒ग्निः क्रतु॑भिः॒ समि॑द्धः॒ स नो॒ दिवा॒ स रि॒षः पा॑तु॒ नक्त॑म्
rakṣohaṇaṃ vājinamā jigharmi mitraṃ prathiṣṭhamupa yāmi śarma śiśāno agniḥ kratubhiḥ samiddhaḥ sa no divā sa riṣaḥ pātu naktam
I praise with song the protector’s strength, I fix Mitra’s seat and go to the shrine; Agni, the young lord, is kindled by rituals, may he guard us by day and night.

ayodaṃṣṭro arciṣā yātudhānānupa spṛśa jātavedaḥ samiddhaḥ ā jihvayā mūradevānrabhasva kravyādo vṛktvyapi dhatsvāsan
May the tooth of flame come with light, touching the sacrificial timber; Jātavedas kindled. O tongue, approach the gods, invoke the curving oblations, and bear also the clarified fat.

ubhobhayāvinnupa dhehi daṃṣṭrā hiṃsraḥ śiśāno'varaṃ paraṃ ca utāntarikṣe pari yāhi rājañjambhaiḥ saṃ dhehyabhi yātudhānān
Bring both jaws forward; fierce-toothed, O youthful lord, be the bulwark above and below. Go forth around the sky, O king, with roaring drops, bring the sacrificial fuel hither.

yajñairiṣūḥ saṃnamamāno agne vācā śalyām̐ aśanibhirdihānaḥ tābhirvidhya hṛdaye yātudhānānpratīco bāhūnprati bhaṅghyeṣām
With rites and songs, O Agni, rising, with mouths like thunderbolts blazing—let them be placed in the heart; let offerings go east and break forth with arms to scatter them.

अग्ने॒ त्वचं॑ यातु॒धान॑स्य भिन्धि हिं॒स्राशनि॒र्हर॑सा हन्त्वेनम् । प्र पर्वा॑णि जातवेदः शृणीहि क्र॒व्यात्क्र॑वि॒ष्णुर्वि चि॑नोतु वृ॒क्णम्
agne tvacaṃ yātudhānasya bhindhi hiṃsrāśanirharasā hantvenam pra parvāṇi jātavedaḥ śaṛṇīhi kravyātkraviṣṇurvi cinotu vṛkṇam
Agni, rend the skin of the offering, strike the fierce bolt, slay with joyous might; Jātavedas, sound the rows, call the kine, let the bull break the bands and overcome the wolf.

यत्रे॒दानीं॒ पश्य॑सि जातवेद॒स्तिष्ठ॑न्तमग्न उ॒त वा॒ चर॑न्तम् । यद्वा॒न्तरि॑क्षे प॒थिभिः॒ पत॑न्तं॒ तमस्ता॑ विध्य॒ शर्वा॒ शिशा॑नः
yatredānīṃ paśyasi jātavedastiṣṭhantamagna uta vā carantam yadvāntarikṣe pathibhiḥ patantaṃ tamastā vidhya śarvā śiśānaḥ
Where now you see Jātavedas (Agni) standing or moving; whether he moves among the paths in the sky, let the shafts (arrows) and tips of the foes be dispelled.

उ॒ताल॑ब्धं स्पृणुहि जातवेद आलेभा॒नादृ॒ष्टिभि॑र्यातु॒धाना॑त् । अग्ने॒ पूर्वो॒ नि ज॑हि॒ शोशु॑चान आ॒मादः॒ क्ष्विङ्का॒स्तम॑द॒न्त्वेनीः॑
utālabdhaṃ spṛṇuhi jātaveda ālebhānādṛṣṭibhiryātudhānāt agne pūrvo ni jahi śośucāna āmādaḥ kṣviṅkāstamadantvenīḥ
Touch, Jātavedas, what has been gained; from the unseen hostile urges free it. O Agni, drive away the former stain and the consuming darts; may they perish.

इ॒ह प्र ब्रू॑हि यत॒मः सो अ॑ग्ने॒ यो या॑तु॒धानो॒ य इ॒दं कृ॒णोति॑ । तमा र॑भस्व स॒मिधा॑ यविष्ठ नृ॒चक्ष॑स॒श्चक्षु॑षे रन्धयैनम्
iha pra brūhi yatamaḥ so agne yo yātudhāno ya idaṃ kṛṇoti tamā rabhasva samidhā yaviṣṭha nṛcakṣasaścakṣuṣe randhayainam
Speak here, Agni: what effort is this that you perform? Make it luminous, and bestow the fuel and grain; open for the people's sight with your eye.

ती॒क्ष्णेना॑ग्ने॒ चक्षु॑षा रक्ष य॒ज्ञं प्राञ्चं॒ वसु॑भ्यः॒ प्र ण॑य प्रचेतः । हिं॒स्रं रक्षां॑स्य॒भि शोशु॑चानं॒ मा त्वा॑ दभन्यातु॒धाना॑ नृचक्षः
tīkṣṇenāgne cakṣuṣā rakṣa yajñaṃ prāñcaṃ vasubhyaḥ pra ṇaya pracetaḥ hiṃsraṃ rakṣāṃsyabhi śośucānaṃ mā tvā dabhanyātudhānā nṛcakṣaḥ
O sharp-eyed Agni, protect with your sight the eastward sacrifice for the Vasus; grant intelligence and vigor. Guard his fierce protection, O searing one; do not let the darts harm him.

नृ॒चक्षा॒ रक्षः॒ परि॑ पश्य वि॒क्षु तस्य॒ त्रीणि॒ प्रति॑ शृणी॒ह्यग्रा॑ । तस्या॑ग्ने पृ॒ष्टीर्हर॑सा शृणीहि त्रे॒धा मूलं॑ यातु॒धान॑स्य वृश्च
nṛcakṣā rakṣaḥ pari paśya vikṣu tasya trīṇi prati śaṛṇīhyagrā tasyāgne pṛṣṭīrharasā śaṛṇīhi tredhā mūlaṃ yātudhānasya vṛśca
Look about, O Nṛcakṣa (king of eyes), and see the three foremost ranks of the foe. Agni, let your breast bring the troop to joy; let the threefold root of the hostile band be carried away.

त्रिर्या॑तु॒धानः॒ प्रसि॑तिं त एत्वृ॒तं यो अ॑ग्ने॒ अनृ॑तेन॒ हन्ति॑ । तम॒र्चिषा॑ स्फू॒र्जय॑ञ्जातवेदः सम॒क्षमे॑नं गृण॒ते नि वृ॑ङ्धि
triryātudhānaḥ prasitiṃ ta etvṛtaṃ yo agne anṛtena hanti tamarciṣā sphūrjayañjātavedaḥ samakṣamenaṃ gṛṇate ni vṛṅdhi
If the hostile band comes thrice, let it be scattered; Agni who overcomes untruth destroys the foe. Jātavedas, with that radiance produce growth; proclaim it before the assembly.

तद॑ग्ने॒ चक्षुः॒ प्रति॑ धेहि रे॒भे श॑फा॒रुजं॒ येन॒ पश्य॑सि यातु॒धान॑म् । अ॒थ॒र्व॒वज्ज्योति॑षा॒ दैव्ये॑न स॒त्यं धूर्व॑न्तम॒चितं॒ न्यो॑ष
tadagne cakṣuḥ prati dhehi rebhe śaphārujaṃ yena paśyasi yātudhānam atharvavajjyotiṣā daivyena satyaṃ dhūrvantamacitaṃ nyoṣa
O Agni, place thy eye opposite the ray that you see the hostile band. The Atharvan knowledge of divine light may produce the true, lasting order.

यद॑ग्ने अ॒द्य मि॑थु॒ना शपा॑तो॒ यद्वा॒चस्तृ॒ष्टं ज॒नय॑न्त रे॒भाः । म॒न्योर्मन॑सः शर॒व्या॒३॒॑ जाय॑ते॒ या तया॑ विध्य॒ हृद॑ये यातु॒धाना॑न्
yadagne adya mithunā śapāto yadvācastṛṣṭaṃ janayanta rebhāḥ manyormanasaḥ śaravyā3 jāyate yā tayā vidhya hṛdaye yātudhānān
Whatever curse or spoken word of union Agni, the shafts have produced — the mind of many gives birth to the piercing one; by that let it be appointed in the heart and come upon the host.

परा॑ शृणीहि॒ तप॑सा यातु॒धाना॒न्परा॑ग्ने॒ रक्षो॒ हर॑सा शृणीहि । परा॒र्चिषा॒ मूर॑देवाञ्छृणीहि॒ परा॑सु॒तृपो॑ अ॒भि शोशु॑चानः
parā śaṛṇīhi tapasā yātudhānānparāgne rakṣo harasā śaṛṇīhi parārciṣā mūradevāñchṛṇīhi parāsutṛpo abhi śośucānaḥ
Set the superior rank by tapas (power); Agni, protect from the front with joy. Send forth the higher rays like gods; bring the hostile swift ones to abashment.

परा॒द्य दे॒वा वृ॑जि॒नं शृ॑णन्तु प्र॒त्यगे॑नं श॒पथा॑ यन्तु तृ॒ष्टाः । वा॒चास्ते॑नं॒ शर॑व ऋच्छन्तु॒ मर्म॒न्विश्व॑स्यैतु॒ प्रसि॑तिं यातु॒धानः॑
parādya devā vṛjinaṃ śaṛṇantu pratyagenaṃ śapathā yantu tṛṣṭāḥ vācāstenaṃ śarava ṛcchantu marmanviśvasyaitu prasitiṃ yātudhānaḥ
Let the gods hear the vow, each separately; let those who thirst be bound by their oaths. Let thy words rend their arrows; may the inner vital point of the whole go forth and the hostile band be scattered.

यः पौरु॑षेयेण क्र॒विषा॑ सम॒ङ्क्ते यो अश्व्ये॑न प॒शुना॑ यातु॒धानः॑ । यो अ॒घ्न्याया॒ भर॑ति क्षी॒रम॑ग्ने॒ तेषां॑ शी॒र्षाणि॒ हर॒सापि॑ वृश्च
yaḥ pauruṣeyeṇa kraviṣā samaṅkte yo aśvyena paśunā yātudhānaḥ yo aghnyāyā bharati kṣīramagne teṣāṃ śīrṣāṇi harasāpi vṛśca
He who, in the common sacrifice, joins cattle with men, who sends the herd with horses — Agni bears their heads as milk; may his leaders be borne away.

सं॒व॒त्स॒रीणं॒ पय॑ उ॒स्रिया॑या॒स्तस्य॒ माशी॑द्यातु॒धानो॑ नृचक्षः । पी॒यूष॑मग्ने यत॒मस्तितृ॑प्सा॒त्तं प्र॒त्यञ्च॑म॒र्चिषा॑ विध्य॒ मर्म॑न्
saṃvatsarīṇaṃ paya usriyāyāstasya māśīdyātudhāno nṛcakṣaḥ pīyūṣamagne yatamastitṛpsāttaṃ pratyañcamarciṣā vidhya marman
May the yearly streams and rivers of milk bless the hostile band, O Nṛcakṣa. Agni, the sought nectar, the triple luminance, place it upon their vital point with radiance.

वि॒षं गवां॑ यातु॒धानाः॑ पिब॒न्त्वा वृ॑श्च्यन्ता॒मदि॑तये दु॒रेवाः॑ । परै॑नान्दे॒वः स॑वि॒ता द॑दातु॒ परा॑ भा॒गमोष॑धीनां जयन्ताम्
viṣaṃ gavāṃ yātudhānāḥ pibantvā vṛścyantāmaditaye durevāḥ paraināndevaḥ savitā dadātu parā bhāgamoṣadhīnāṃ jayantām
Let the poison of the cattle go to the hostile bands; let them drink and be weakened for the gods' distant day. May the gods, with Savita, grant the far portion of the healing herbs to prevail.

स॒नाद॑ग्ने मृणसि यातु॒धाना॒न्न त्वा॒ रक्षां॑सि॒ पृत॑नासु जिग्युः । अनु॑ दह स॒हमू॑रान्क्र॒व्यादो॒ मा ते॑ हे॒त्या मु॑क्षत॒ दैव्या॑याः
sanādagne mṛṇasi yātudhānānna tvā rakṣāṃsi pṛtanāsu jigyuḥ anu daha sahamūrānkravyādo mā te hetyā mukṣata daivyāyāḥ
Come near, Agni, let the wealth go to the hostile bands; do not destroy us among the crowd. Burn up the foolish speakers; free us from harmful fate by divine means.

tvaṃ no agne adharādudaktāttvaṃ paścāduta rakṣā purastāt prati te te ajarāsastapiṣṭhā aghaśaṃsaṃ śośucato dahantu
From beneath and from behind you protect us, Agni; from before protect us. Let the ageless, enduring (fires) immolate the foul and purify the polluted.

paścātpurastādadharādudaktātkaviḥ kāvyena pari pāhi rājan sakhe sakhāyamajaro jarimṇe'gne martām̐ amartyastvaṃ naḥ
After from before, and after from beneath, O poet, defend with skillful verse, O king. Friend of friends, immortal for the aged and the old, Agni, you are our mortals' savior.

pari tvāgne puraṃ vayaṃ vipraṃ sahasya dhīmahi dhṛṣadvarṇaṃ divedive hantāraṃ bhaṅgurāvatām
Around thee, Agni, we keep the city, pondering with the wise. Day by day behold the strong destroyer, breaker of the fragile.

वि॒षेण॑ भङ्गु॒राव॑तः॒ प्रति॑ ष्म र॒क्षसो॑ दह । अग्ने॑ ति॒ग्मेन॑ शो॒चिषा॒ तपु॑रग्राभिरृ॒ष्टिभिः॑
viṣeṇa bhaṅgurāvataḥ prati ṣma rakṣaso daha agne tigmena śociṣā tapuragrābhirṛṣṭibhiḥ
With poison that has broken the brittle, burn to pieces the hostile foes. Agni, with intense lamentation and holy fires of austerity, with thwarting darts.

प्रत्य॑ग्ने मिथु॒ना द॑ह यातु॒धाना॑ किमी॒दिना॑ । सं त्वा॑ शिशामि जागृ॒ह्यद॑ब्धं विप्र॒ मन्म॑भिः
pratyagne mithunā daha yātudhānā kimīdinā saṃ tvā śiśāmi jāgṛhyadabdhaṃ vipra manmabhiḥ
Burn, O pair of fires, the hostile bands this day. I urge thee; receive the joyfully offered prize with wise thoughts.

pratyagne harasā haraḥ śaṛṇīhi viśvataḥ prati yātudhānasya rakṣaso balaṃ vi ruja vīryam
Ward off, with joy, the hostile might on every side. May the protecting strength of the foe's force be checked; bring vigor in resistance.
