tve ha yatpitaraścinna indra viśvā vāmā jaritāro asanvan tve gāvaḥ sudughāstve hyaśvāstvaṃ vasu devayate vaniṣṭhaḥ
You who are both fatherly and not, Indra, all these others were gathered—cows are hard to milk; you, O steed, bestow wealth, O Vasu, most excellent.

rājeva hi janibhiḥ kṣeṣyevāva dyubhirabhi viduṣkaviḥ san piśā giro maghavangobhiraśvaistvāyataḥ śiśīhi rāye asmān
Ruler, indeed by kings I shall be supported; the poet, versed in rites, with clarified speech among cows and horses, comes to us for the king—assist us with skill and praise.

imā u tvā paspṛdhānāso atra mandrā giro devayantīrupa sthuḥ arvācī te pathyā rāya etu syāma te sumatāvindra śarman
These foremost speakers here urge you on; O singers, come as the king’s paths; may you be our well-minded protectors, bringing favor and shelter.

dhenuṃ na tvā sūyavase dudukṣannupa brahmāṇi sasṛje vasiṣṭhaḥ tvāminme gopatiṃ viśva āhā na indraḥ sumatiṃ gantvaccha
The Brahmanas did not set you as the sun’s kine; Vasiṣṭha created you among the Brahmanas. May the world call you lord of cattle; not Indra, may he bring good thought to you.

अर्णां॑सि चित्पप्रथा॒ना सु॒दास॒ इन्द्रो॑ गा॒धान्य॑कृणोत्सुपा॒रा । शर्ध॑न्तं शि॒म्युमु॒चथ॑स्य॒ नव्यः॒ शापं॒ सिन्धू॑नामकृणो॒दश॑स्तीः
arṇāṃsi citpaprathānā sudāsa indro gādhānyakṛṇotsupārā śardhantaṃ śimyumucathasya navyaḥ śāpaṃ sindhūnāmakṛṇodaśastīḥ
Indra, generous in gifts, urged the cows to the streams and made them produce abundant milk; he broke the new curse of the oceans and rendered them favorable.

puroḷā itturvaśo yakṣurāsīdrāye matsyāso niśitā apīva śruṣṭiṃ cakrurbhṛgavo druhyavaśca sakhā sakhāyamataradviṣūcoḥ
From ancient days the waters were mighty like waves; fishes dwelt in them at night and drank. Bṛgvas fashioned hearing and action; friends, even hostile ones, were made to meet.

ā pakthāso bhalānaso bhanantālināso viṣāṇinaḥ śivāsaḥ ā yo'nayatsadhamā āryasya gavyā tṛtsubhyo ajaganyudhā nṝn
Good waters and strong-voiced rivers, poisonous and beneficent—these, sending prosperity, the Aryan gathered; he yoked the cattle and drove men to battle.

दु॒रा॒ध्यो॒३॒॑ अदि॑तिं स्रे॒वय॑न्तोऽचे॒तसो॒ वि ज॑गृभ्रे॒ परु॑ष्णीम् । म॒ह्नावि॑व्यक्पृथि॒वीं पत्य॑मानः प॒शुष्क॒विर॑शय॒च्चाय॑मानः
durādhyo3 aditiṃ srevayanto'cetaso vi jagṛbhre paruṣṇīm mahnāvivyakpṛthivīṃ patyamānaḥ paśuṣkaviraśayaccāyamānaḥ
They sent forth Aditi’s remote ones with mindless hearts; they seized Paruṣṇī. The lordly one pressed the earth, protecting the cattle’s kine and the herds at dusk.

īyurarthaṃ na nyarthaṃ paruṣṇīmāśuścanedabhipitvaṃ jagāma sudāsa indraḥ sutukām̐ amitrānarandhayanmānuṣe vadhrivācaḥ
They went to Paruṣṇīm for benefit, not for nothing; Sudāsa Indra, leader of hosts, struck down foes and pierced mankind with mighty speech.

īyurgāvo na yavasādagopā yathākṛtamabhi mitraṃ citāsaḥ pṛśnigāvaḥ pṛśninipreṣitāsaḥ śruṣṭiṃ cakrurniyuto rantayaśca
The cows did not wander like barley-eaters; they were pastured as Mitra had arranged. The shining cows sent sound; they made hearing and movement for the herds.

ekaṃ ca yo viṃśatiṃ ca śravasyā vaikarṇayorjanānrājā nyastaḥ dasmo na sadmanni śiśāti barhiḥ śūraḥ sargamakṛṇodindra eṣām
One and twenty, and twenty besides, were placed as earless rulers by the kinsmen; he fashioned the brave man, making abundant seats—these Indra created for them.

अध॑ श्रु॒तं क॒वषं॑ वृ॒द्धम॒प्स्वनु॑ द्रु॒ह्युं नि वृ॑ण॒ग्वज्र॑बाहुः । वृ॒णा॒ना अत्र॑ स॒ख्याय॑ स॒ख्यं त्वा॒यन्तो॒ ये अम॑द॒न्ननु॑ त्वा
adha śrutaṃ kavaṣaṃ vṛddhamapsvanu druhyuṃ ni vṛṇagvajrabāhuḥ vṛṇānā atra sakhyāya sakhyaṃ tvāyanto ye amadannanu tvā
He heard the ancient bard and attacked the hostile ones; the bolt-armed one chose the vow. Those who came here as companions, making friendship with you who do not partake of unripe food.

वि स॒द्यो विश्वा॑ दृंहि॒तान्ये॑षा॒मिन्द्रः॒ पुरः॒ सह॑सा स॒प्त द॑र्दः । व्यान॑वस्य॒ तृत्स॑वे॒ गयं॑ भा॒ग्जेष्म॑ पू॒रुं वि॒दथे॑ मृ॒ध्रवा॑चम्
vi sadyo viśvā dṛṃhitānyeṣāmindraḥ puraḥ sahasā sapta dardaḥ vyānavasya tṛtsave gayaṃ bhāgjeṣma pūruṃ vidathe mṛdhravācam
Suddenly Indra overwhelmed all the fortresses; he struck seven mighty blows together. He sent forth the threefold troop and apportioned the spoil, praising the man with joyous speech.

नि ग॒व्यवोऽन॑वो द्रु॒ह्यव॑श्च ष॒ष्टिः श॒ता सु॑षुपुः॒ षट् स॒हस्रा॑ । ष॒ष्टिर्वी॒रासो॒ अधि॒ षड्दु॑वो॒यु विश्वेदिन्द्र॑स्य वी॒र्या॑ कृ॒तानि॑
ni gavyavo'navo druhyavaśca ṣaṣṭiḥ śatā suṣupuḥ ṣaṭ sahasrā ṣaṣṭirvīrāso adhi ṣaḍduvoyu viśvedindrasya vīryā kṛtāni
Sixty and a hundred and six hundred and six thousand—these multitude of heroes were made by Indra; he endowed strength and made them brave in every war.

इन्द्रे॑णै॒ते तृत्स॑वो॒ वेवि॑षाणा॒ आपो॒ न सृ॒ष्टा अ॑धवन्त॒ नीचीः॑ । दु॒र्मि॒त्रासः॑ प्रकल॒विन्मिमा॑ना ज॒हुर्विश्वा॑नि॒ भोज॑ना सु॒दासे॑
indreṇaite tṛtsavo veviṣāṇā āpo na sṛṣṭā adhavanta nīcīḥ durmitrāsaḥ prakalavinmimānā jahurviśvāni bhojanā sudāse
By Indra these threefold bands poured forth; waters were not created low. Foes of evil nature cast off their arrogance and offered all foods to Sudāsa.

अ॒र्धं वी॒रस्य॑ शृत॒पाम॑नि॒न्द्रं परा॒ शर्ध॑न्तं नुनुदे अ॒भि क्षाम् । इन्द्रो॑ म॒न्युं म॑न्यु॒म्यो॑ मिमाय भे॒जे प॒थो व॑र्त॒निं पत्य॑मानः
ardhaṃ vīrasya śaṛtapāmanindraṃ parā śardhantaṃ nunude abhi kṣām indro manyuṃ manyumyo mimāya bheje patho vartaniṃ patyamānaḥ
Half the hero’s might was held in his hand; Indra, urging onward, called him to pardon. Indra watered many Manus and upheld the path, protecting the traveler.

आ॒ध्रेण॑ चि॒त्तद्वेकं॑ चकार सिं॒ह्यं॑ चि॒त्पेत्वे॑ना जघान । अव॑ स्र॒क्तीर्वे॒श्या॑वृश्च॒दिन्द्रः॒ प्राय॑च्छ॒द्विश्वा॒ भोज॑ना सु॒दासे॑
ādhreṇa cittadvekaṃ cakāra siṃhyaṃ citpetvenā jaghāna ava sraktīrveśyāvṛścadindraḥ prāyacchadviśvā bhojanā sudāse
He made one mind with the tribe of Ādhra, like a lion; with that mind they smote. Indra spread forth his flood and provided all foods to Sudāsa.

शश्व॑न्तो॒ हि शत्र॑वो रार॒धुष्टे॑ भे॒दस्य॑ चि॒च्छर्ध॑तो विन्द॒ रन्धि॑म् । मर्ता॒ँ एनः॑ स्तुव॒तो यः कृ॒णोति॑ ति॒ग्मं तस्मि॒न्नि ज॑हि॒ वज्र॑मिन्द्र
śaśvanto hi śatravo rāradhuṣṭe bhedasya cicchardhato vinda randhim martām̐ enaḥ stuvato yaḥ kṛṇoti tigmaṃ tasminni jahi vajramindra
The hostile ones, ever opposing, sought to pierce breaches; the man who praises him makes Indra thrust the sharp bolt into that chasm.

आव॒दिन्द्रं॑ य॒मुना॒ तृत्स॑वश्च॒ प्रात्र॑ भे॒दं स॒र्वता॑ता मुषायत् । अ॒जास॑श्च॒ शिग्र॑वो॒ यक्ष॑वश्च ब॒लिं शी॒र्षाणि॑ जभ्रु॒रश्व्या॑नि
āvadindraṃ yamunā tṛtsavaśca prātra bhedaṃ sarvatātā muṣāyat ajāsaśca śigravo yakṣavaśca baliṃ śīrṣāṇi jabhruraśvyāni
They called Indra, Yamuna, and the threefold hosts, and everywhere they made breaches; swift mares and strong stallions heralded offerings and lifted up heads.

न त॑ इन्द्र सुम॒तयो॒ न रायः॑ सं॒चक्षे॒ पूर्वा॑ उ॒षसो॒ न नूत्नाः॑ । देव॑कं चिन्मान्यमा॒नं ज॑घ॒न्थाव॒ त्मना॑ बृह॒तः शम्ब॑रं भेत्
na ta indra sumatayo na rāyaḥ saṃcakṣe pūrvā uṣaso na nūtnāḥ devakaṃ cinmānyamānaṃ jaghanthāva tmanā bṛhataḥ śambaraṃ bhet
Indra did not deem the good counsels nor the former splendours as new. They pierced the divine thought and struck down the great herd with mind and vast prowess.

प्र ये गृ॒हादम॑मदुस्त्वा॒या प॑राश॒रः श॒तया॑तु॒र्वसि॑ष्ठः । न ते॑ भो॒जस्य॑ स॒ख्यं मृ॑ष॒न्ताधा॑ सू॒रिभ्यः॑ सु॒दिना॒ व्यु॑च्छान्
pra ye gṛhādamamadustvāyā parāśaraḥ śatayāturvasiṣṭhaḥ na te bhojasya sakhyaṃ mṛṣantādhā sūribhyaḥ sudinā vyucchān
May he who is the shelter of homes and the protector send down a hundredfold blessing, Vasiṣṭha. Do not falsify your friendship in the feast; the noble ones divide the day’s portions.

द्वे नप्तु॑र्दे॒वव॑तः श॒ते गोर्द्वा रथा॑ व॒धूम॑न्ता सु॒दासः॑ । अर्ह॑न्नग्ने पैजव॒नस्य॒ दानं॒ होते॑व॒ सद्म॒ पर्ये॑मि॒ रेभ॑न्
dve napturdevavataḥ śate gordvā rathā vadhūmantā sudāsaḥ arhannagne paijavanasya dānaṃ hoteva sadma paryemi rebhan
Two princes, hundred-gifted from the divine host, yoked the oxen and prepared the chariots; Sudāsa fitted the ritual donation for Agni; I have carried the offering to the priest’s place.

च॒त्वारो॑ मा पैजव॒नस्य॒ दानाः॒ स्मद्दि॑ष्टयः कृश॒निनो॑ निरे॒के । ऋ॒ज्रासो॑ मा पृथिवि॒ष्ठाः सु॒दास॑स्तो॒कं तो॒काय॒ श्रव॑से वहन्ति
catvāro mā paijavanasya dānāḥ smaddiṣṭayaḥ kṛśanino nireke ṛjrāso mā pṛthiviṣṭhāḥ sudāsastokaṃ tokāya śravase vahanti
Four are the gifts for the priest’s seat as I commanded: the thin ones in a single place. Straight-risen ones, earth-borne, Sudāsa’s possessors bear the milking-cows to the pasture with song.

यस्य॒ श्रवो॒ रोद॑सी अ॒न्तरु॒र्वी शी॒र्ष्णेशी॑र्ष्णे विब॒भाजा॑ विभ॒क्ता । स॒प्तेदिन्द्रं॒ न स्र॒वतो॑ गृणन्ति॒ नि यु॑ध्याम॒धिम॑शिशाद॒भीके॑
yasya śravo rodasī antarurvī śīrṣṇeśīrṣṇe vibabhājā vibhaktā saptedindraṃ na sravato gṛṇanti ni yudhyāmadhimaśiśādabhīke
Whose fame is the tearful one, whose inner stream divides the head of heads; they do not call that Indra sevenfold who fights not, who does not fear to press forward.

इ॒मं न॑रो मरुतः सश्च॒तानु॒ दिवो॑दासं॒ न पि॒तरं॑ सु॒दासः॑ । अ॒वि॒ष्टना॑ पैजव॒नस्य॒ केतं॑ दू॒णाशं॑ क्ष॒त्रम॒जरं॑ दुवो॒यु
imaṃ naro marutaḥ saścatānu divodāsaṃ na pitaraṃ sudāsaḥ aviṣṭanā paijavanasya ketaṃ dūṇāśaṃ kṣatramajaraṃ duvoyu
This man is not the friend of Maruts, nor their offspring, not the giver from heaven, not the generous father; he entered the plated host, the banner of the warrior, the hard abode of twofold might.
