इ॒दं श्रेष्ठं॒ ज्योति॑षां॒ ज्योति॒रागा॑च्चि॒त्रः प्र॑के॒तो अ॑जनिष्ट॒ विभ्वा॑ । यथा॒ प्रसू॑ता सवि॒तुः स॒वाय॑ँ ए॒वा रात्र्यु॒षसे॒ योनि॑मारैक्
idaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ jyotiṣāṃ jyotirāgāccitraḥ praketo ajaniṣṭa vibhvā yathā prasūtā savituḥ savāyam̐ evā rātryuṣase yonimāraik
This is the choicest of lights, a wondrous banner of the sages, the ever‑shining dawn of Savitṛ—thus, born of Savitṛ, may she shine in the night, the single womb of radiance.

ruśadvatsā ruśatī śvetyāgādāraigu kṛṣṇā sadanānyasyāḥ samānabandhū amṛte anūcī dyāvā varṇaṃ carata āmināne
Like ruṣhad calves, like a bright chariot, white, black, and the abode of her friends—equal in kinship to immortality, she moves forth; heaven and earth travel with her as companions.

स॒मा॒नो अध्वा॒ स्वस्रो॑रन॒न्तस्तम॒न्यान्या॑ चरतो दे॒वशि॑ष्टे । न मे॑थेते॒ न त॑स्थतुः सु॒मेके॒ नक्तो॒षासा॒ सम॑नसा॒ विरू॑पे
samāno adhvā svasroranantastamanyānyā carato devaśiṣṭe na methete na tasthatuḥ sumeke naktoṣāsā samanasā virūpe
Like equal paths, like many‑streaming rivers, she moves among other lights, chosen by the gods. Do not let her be turned from us, nor let her stand away—may the dawn with grouped songs not be estranged.

bhāsvatī netrī sūnṛtānāmaceti citrā vi duro na āvaḥ prārpyā jagadvyu no rāyo akhyaduṣā ajīgarbhuvanāni viśvā
Bright‑eyed, she knows the songs of those who arise; wondrously adorned, she brings prosperity. Spread abroad, O dawn, our realms, proclaim the radiant worlds begetting all.

jihmaśye3 caritave maghonyābhogaya iṣṭaye rāya u tvam dabhraṃ paśyadbhya urviyā vicakṣa uṣā ajīgarbhuvanāni viśvā
I have desired to perform the mighty rite in the beloved place of the famous ones; behold for them the fair realm, O Dawn, spread the worlds that bear all.

kṣatrāya tvaṃ śravase tvaṃ mahīyā iṣṭaye tvamarthamiva tvamityai visadṛśā jīvitābhipracakṣa uṣā ajīgarbhuvanāni viśvā
To thee is power, to thee is fame, to thee the earth is dear; thou art desired as wealth. With clear sight declare lives’ welfare—O Dawn, bring forth the worlds that bear all.

ए॒षा दि॒वो दु॑हि॒ता प्रत्य॑दर्शि व्यु॒च्छन्ती॑ युव॒तिः शु॒क्रवा॑साः । विश्व॒स्येशा॑ना॒ पार्थि॑वस्य॒ वस्व॒ उषो॑ अ॒द्येह सु॑भगे॒ व्यु॑च्छ
eṣā divo duhitā pratyadarśi vyucchantī yuvatiḥ śukravāsāḥ viśvasyeśānā pārthivasya vasva uṣo adyeha subhage vyuccha
This young woman, milked by the day, revealed herself, scattering brightness, O Shukra-wearers; she is the world’s nourishment, earthly and divine—may Dawn, auspicious here today, unfold her.

प॒रा॒य॒ती॒नामन्वे॑ति॒ पाथ॑ आयती॒नां प्र॑थ॒मा शश्व॑तीनाम् । व्यु॒च्छन्ती॑ जी॒वमु॑दी॒रय॑न्त्यु॒षा मृ॒तं कं च॒न बो॒धय॑न्ती
parāyatīnāmanveti pātha āyatīnāṃ prathamā śaśvatīnām vyucchantī jīvamudīrayantyuṣā mṛtaṃ kaṃ cana bodhayantī
She follows the foremost paths and comes to those who go before; ever enduring, she unfolds life, awakening the dead and enlightening anyone.

उषो॒ यद॒ग्निं स॒मिधे॑ च॒कर्थ॒ वि यदाव॒श्चक्ष॑सा॒ सूर्य॑स्य । यन्मानु॑षान्य॒क्ष्यमा॑णा॒ँ अजी॑ग॒स्तद्दे॒वेषु॑ चकृषे भ॒द्रमप्नः॑
uṣo yadagniṃ samidhe cakartha vi yadāvaścakṣasā sūryasya yanmānuṣānyakṣyamāṇām̐ ajīgastaddeveṣu cakṛṣe bhadramapnaḥ
Dawn who kindled Agni with fuel and who fixed the eye of the Sun; she, unblamed by men, strengthened them and bestowed auspiciousness among the gods.

किया॒त्या यत्स॒मया॒ भवा॑ति॒ या व्यू॒षुर्याश्च॑ नू॒नं व्यु॒च्छान् । अनु॒ पूर्वाः॑ कृपते वावशा॒ना प्र॒दीध्या॑ना॒ जोष॑म॒न्याभि॑रेति
kiyātyā yatsamayā bhavāti yā vyūṣuryāśca nūnaṃ vyucchān anu pūrvāḥ kṛpate vāvaśānā pradīdhyānā joṣamanyābhireti
By what ordinance the seasons arise, by what splendour and by what overflowing not lacking — the former ones followed the giver’s will; they shone forth, giving joy among men.

ई॒युष्टे ये पूर्व॑तरा॒मप॑श्यन्व्यु॒च्छन्ती॑मु॒षसं॒ मर्त्या॑सः । अ॒स्माभि॑रू॒ नु प्र॑ति॒चक्ष्या॑भू॒दो ते य॑न्ति॒ ये अ॑प॒रीषु॒ पश्या॑न्
īyuṣṭe ye pūrvatarāmapaśyanvyucchantīmuṣasaṃ martyāsaḥ asmābhirū nu praticakṣyābhūdo te yanti ye aparīṣu paśyān
Those ancient mortals who first beheld and manifested this Dawn—attentive to us, they proceed before us; those who see beyond come to them.

या॒व॒यद्द्वे॑षा ऋत॒पा ऋ॑ते॒जाः सु॑म्ना॒वरी॑ सू॒नृता॑ ई॒रय॑न्ती । सु॒म॒ङ्ग॒लीर्बिभ्र॑ती दे॒ववी॑तिमि॒हाद्योषः॒ श्रेष्ठ॑तमा॒ व्यु॑च्छ
yāvayaddveṣā ṛtapā ṛtejāḥ sumnāvarī sūnṛtā īrayantī sumaṅgalīrbibhratī devavītimihādyoṣaḥ śreṣṭhatamā vyuccha
As long as two passions abide, the laws and splendours, the prosperous ones make streams of songs; the auspicious bestowers bear the godly fame—today the foremost Dawn unfolds.

शश्व॑त्पु॒रोषा व्यु॑वास दे॒व्यथो॑ अ॒द्येदं व्या॑वो म॒घोनी॑ । अथो॒ व्यु॑च्छा॒दुत्त॑रा॒ँ अनु॒ द्यून॒जरा॒मृता॑ चरति स्व॒धाभिः॑
śaśvatpuroṣā vyuvāsa devyatho adyedaṃ vyāvo maghonī atho vyucchāduttarām̐ anu dyūnajarāmṛtā carati svadhābhiḥ
Always ancient, she advanced like a lady of the gods; today this wealth-bearing radiance spreads below and above; the youthful undying one walks with offerings of sacred food.

व्य१॒॑ञ्जिभि॑र्दि॒व आता॑स्वद्यौ॒दप॑ कृ॒ष्णां नि॒र्णिजं॑ दे॒व्या॑वः । प्र॒बो॒धय॑न्त्यरु॒णेभि॒रश्वै॒रोषा या॑ति सु॒युजा॒ रथे॑न
vya1ñjibhirdiva ātāsvadyaudapa kṛṣṇāṃ nirṇijaṃ devyāvaḥ prabodhayantyaruṇebhiraśvairoṣā yāti suyujā rathena
By hymns with varied syllables the gods sent forth the dark, hollow one—Devya’s bright daughter; they roused with radiant dawns and yoked the chariot well.

आ॒वह॑न्ती॒ पोष्या॒ वार्या॑णि चि॒त्रं के॒तुं कृ॑णुते॒ चेकि॑ताना । ई॒युषी॑णामुप॒मा शश्व॑तीनां विभाती॒नां प्र॑थ॒मोषा व्य॑श्वैत्
āvahantī poṣyā vāryāṇi citraṃ ketuṃ kṛṇute cekitānā īyuṣīṇāmupamā śaśvatīnāṃ vibhātīnāṃ prathamoṣā vyaśvait
She brings nourishing rains and makes a wondrous banner; like an emblem among the long-lived she shines first for the living.

उदी॑र्ध्वं जी॒वो असु॑र्न॒ आगा॒दप॒ प्रागा॒त्तम॒ आ ज्योति॑रेति । आरै॒क्पन्थां॒ यात॑वे॒ सूर्या॒याग॑न्म॒ यत्र॑ प्रति॒रन्त॒ आयुः॑
udīrdhvaṃ jīvo asurna āgādapa prāgāttama ā jyotireti āraikpanthāṃ yātave sūryāyāganma yatra pratiranta āyuḥ
Life rose upward like the dawning ray from the radiant waters; before arrival she came as light. The Sun’s path is single—there life returns in due course.

स्यूम॑ना वा॒च उदि॑यर्ति॒ वह्निः॒ स्तवा॑नो रे॒भ उ॒षसो॑ विभा॒तीः । अ॒द्या तदु॑च्छ गृण॒ते म॑घोन्य॒स्मे आयु॒र्नि दि॑दीहि प्र॒जाव॑त्
syūmanā vāca udiyarti vahniḥ stavāno rebha uṣaso vibhātīḥ adyā taduccha gṛṇate maghonyasme āyurni didīhi prajāvat
Either with sweet voice the fire arose, the praised one—its radiances are the splendours of Dawn. Today the mighty one speaks forth; grant us life and bestow progeny upon us.

या गोम॑तीरु॒षसः॒ सर्व॑वीरा व्यु॒च्छन्ति॑ दा॒शुषे॒ मर्त्या॑य । वा॒योरि॑व सू॒नृता॑नामुद॒र्के ता अ॑श्व॒दा अ॑श्नवत्सोम॒सुत्वा॑
yā gomatīruṣasaḥ sarvavīrā vyucchanti dāśuṣe martyāya vāyoriva sūnṛtānāmudarke tā aśvadā aśnavatsomasutvā
Like cows at the grasslands, all heroes arise and disperse for mortal service; like winds the streams of the long-lived rise—horses drank the soma, drinking up its might.

मा॒ता दे॒वाना॒मदि॑ते॒रनी॑कं य॒ज्ञस्य॑ के॒तुर्बृ॑ह॒ती वि भा॑हि । प्र॒श॒स्ति॒कृद्ब्रह्म॑णे नो॒ व्यु१॒॑च्छा नो॒ जने॑ जनय विश्ववारे
mātā devānāmaditeranīkaṃ yajñasya keturbṛhatī vi bhāhi praśastikṛdbrahmaṇe no vyu1cchā no jane janaya viśvavāre
Mother of the gods, banner of Aditi’s host, great flag of the sacrifice—spread widely. Praise to the Brahman who made excellent; let our manifestation be born, the universal prospering one.

यच्चि॒त्रमप्न॑ उ॒षसो॒ वह॑न्तीजा॒नाय॑ शशमा॒नाय॑ भ॒द्रम् । तन्नो॑ मि॒त्रो वरु॑णो मामहन्ता॒मदि॑तिः॒ सिन्धुः॑ पृथि॒वी उ॒त द्यौः
yaccitramapna uṣaso vahantījānāya śaśamānāya bhadram tanno mitro varuṇo māmahantāmaditiḥ sindhuḥ pṛthivī uta dyauḥ
Whatever wondrous gift Dawn carries, bearing the cool and calming, may Mitra and Varuna, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth and Heaven grant that welfare to us.
