O Agni, speak of Soma’s might, and of the power of the rite; kindle the fire for the worship. Brighten the gods, reconcile the waters, Agni, grant vigor to your frame and be pleased.

प्राञ्चं॑ य॒ज्ञं च॑कृम॒ वर्ध॑तां॒ गीः स॒मिद्भि॑र॒ग्निं नम॑सा दुवस्यन् । दि॒वः श॑शासुर्वि॒दथा॑ कवी॒नां गृत्सा॑य चित्त॒वसे॑ गा॒तुमी॑षुः
prāñcaṃ yajñaṃ cakṛma vardhatāṃ gīḥ samidbhiragniṃ namasā duvasyan divaḥ śaśāsurvidathā kavīnāṃ gṛtsāya cittavase gātumīṣuḥ
They performed the eastern rite; may strength increase. With fuel they honoured Agni with reverence. The heavenly laws governed the poets; they desired to sing, settled in the mind for aspiration.

mayo dadhe medhiraḥ pūtadakṣo divaḥ subandhurjanuṣā pṛthivyāḥ avindannu darśatamapsva1ntardevāso agnimapasi svasṝṇām
May Mayas place wisdom for me, skilful and pure, the godly binder born of the earth. Behold within the waters the godlike Agni among his sisters.

अव॑र्धयन्सु॒भगं॑ स॒प्त य॒ह्वीः श्वे॒तं ज॑ज्ञा॒नम॑रु॒षं म॑हि॒त्वा । शिशुं॒ न जा॒तम॒भ्या॑रु॒रश्वा॑ दे॒वासो॑ अ॒ग्निं जनि॑मन्वपुष्यन्
avardhayansubhagaṃ sapta yahvīḥ śvetaṃ jajñānamaruṣaṃ mahitvā śiśuṃ na jātamabhyāruraśvā devāso agniṃ janimanvapuṣyan
They increased the noble seven hymns, shining white, proclaiming knowledge and greatness. The gods engendered the infant; the horses brought forth the birth of Agni.

शु॒क्रेभि॒रङ्गै॒ रज॑ आतत॒न्वान्क्रतुं॑ पुना॒नः क॒विभिः॑ प॒वित्रैः॑ । शो॒चिर्वसा॑नः॒ पर्यायु॑र॒पां श्रियो॑ मिमीते बृह॒तीरनू॑नाः
śukrebhiraṅgai raja ātatanvānkratuṃ punānaḥ kavibhiḥ pavitraiḥ śocirvasānaḥ paryāyurapāṃ śriyo mimīte bṛhatīranūnāḥ
With bright colors and swift courses the ritual, renewed by sages, sanctified power. The mourners of waters went about; great riches adorned the broadened ways.

व॒व्राजा॑ सी॒मन॑दती॒रद॑ब्धा दि॒वो य॒ह्वीरव॑साना॒ अन॑ग्नाः । सना॒ अत्र॑ युव॒तयः॒ सयो॑नी॒रेकं॒ गर्भं॑ दधिरे स॒प्त वाणीः॑
vavrājā sīmanadatīradabdhā divo yahvīravasānā anagnāḥ sanā atra yuvatayaḥ sayonīrekaṃ garbhaṃ dadhire sapta vāṇīḥ
The wide-stepping kings yoked the flooded rivers; the priests of heaven resumed their rites, unextinguished. Maidens here put one womb together; seven voices upheld it.

स्ती॒र्णा अ॑स्य सं॒हतो॑ वि॒श्वरू॑पा घृ॒तस्य॒ योनौ॑ स्र॒वथे॒ मधू॑नाम् । अस्थु॒रत्र॑ धे॒नवः॒ पिन्व॑माना म॒ही द॒स्मस्य॑ मा॒तरा॑ समी॒ची
stīrṇā asya saṃhato viśvarūpā ghṛtasya yonau sravathe madhūnām asthuratra dhenavaḥ pinvamānā mahī dasmasya mātarā samīcī
The churned butter of this gathered mass flowed from the two-sided source of ghee; the cows, moving restlessly, struck the earth. O mothers, draw near.

babhrāṇaḥ sūno sahaso vyadyauddadhānaḥ śukrā rabhasā vapūṃṣi ścotanti dhārā madhuno ghṛtasya vṛṣā yatra vāvṛdhe kāvyena
The progeny quickened, the swift-born men moved; bright were the offerings by dawn. The streams of honey and ghee ran where the poets increased in song.

पि॒तुश्चि॒दूध॑र्ज॒नुषा॑ विवेद॒ व्य॑स्य॒ धारा॑ असृज॒द्वि धेनाः॑ । गुहा॒ चर॑न्तं॒ सखि॑भिः शि॒वेभि॑र्दि॒वो य॒ह्वीभि॒र्न गुहा॑ बभूव
pituścidūdharjanuṣā viveda vyasya dhārā asṛjadvi dhenāḥ guhā carantaṃ sakhibhiḥ śivebhirdivo yahvībhirna guhā babhūva
The fathers split the milky treasure and gave forth the streams, creating the herds. Caves moved with companions; the lofty singers and the singers of heaven made the cave manifest.

pituśca garbhaṃ janituśca babhre pūrvīreko adhayatpīpyānāḥ vṛṣṇe sapatnī śucaye sabandhū ubhe asmai manuṣye3 ni pāhi
The fathers conceived the womb and produced birth; the ancients with vigor cherished the calf. O matchless pair, protect these two humans for us.

उ॒रौ म॒हाँ अ॑निबा॒धे व॑व॒र्धापो॑ अ॒ग्निं य॒शसः॒ सं हि पू॒र्वीः । ऋ॒तस्य॒ योना॑वशय॒द्दमू॑ना जामी॒नाम॒ग्निर॒पसि॒ स्वसॄ॑णाम्
urau mahām̐ anibādhe vavardhāpo agniṃ yaśasaḥ saṃ hi pūrvīḥ ṛtasya yonāvaśayaddamūnā jāmīnāmagnirapasi svasṝṇām
Their great breasts unbound, the waters increased Agni’s glory from earlier times. The womb of ritual law bore the assembly; Agni flowed among his sisters.

अ॒क्रो न ब॒भ्रिः स॑मि॒थे म॒हीनां॑ दिदृ॒क्षेयः॑ सू॒नवे॒ भाऋ॑जीकः । उदु॒स्रिया॒ जनि॑ता॒ यो ज॒जाना॒पां गर्भो॒ नृत॑मो य॒ह्वो अ॒ग्निः
akro na babhriḥ samithe mahīnāṃ didṛkṣeyaḥ sūnave bhāṛjīkaḥ udusriyā janitā yo jajānāpāṃ garbho nṛtamo yahvo agniḥ
Not a cloud was there when the maker surveyed the lands; a son was born, the singer descended. The wide-spreading river was born; Agni, swift in song, the dancer, came forth.

अ॒पां गर्भं॑ दर्श॒तमोष॑धीनां॒ वना॑ जजान सु॒भगा॒ विरू॑पम् । दे॒वास॑श्चि॒न्मन॑सा॒ सं हि ज॒ग्मुः पनि॑ष्ठं जा॒तं त॒वसं॑ दुवस्यन्
apāṃ garbhaṃ darśatamoṣadhīnāṃ vanā jajāna subhagā virūpam devāsaścinmanasā saṃ hi jagmuḥ paniṣṭhaṃ jātaṃ tavasaṃ duvasyan
The womb of waters displayed herbs and forests; a fair and shapely one was born. The deities perceived with mind and seized the stronger-born wealth; the rite was invoked by the singers.

बृ॒हन्त॒ इद्भा॒नवो॒ भाऋ॑जीकम॒ग्निं स॑चन्त वि॒द्युतो॒ न शु॒क्राः । गुहे॑व वृ॒द्धं सद॑सि॒ स्वे अ॒न्तर॑पा॒र ऊ॒र्वे अ॒मृतं॒ दुहा॑नाः
bṛhanta idbhānavo bhāṛjīkamagniṃ sacanta vidyuto na śukrāḥ guheva vṛddhaṃ sadasi sve antarapāra ūrve amṛtaṃ duhānāḥ
Great are these bright ones, a mighty Agni of splendor unblemished. In the cave he grows old in his own inner space; the cows milk the immortal as they draw forth.

ईळे॑ च त्वा॒ यज॑मानो ह॒विर्भि॒रीळे॑ सखि॒त्वं सु॑म॒तिं निका॑मः । दे॒वैरवो॑ मिमीहि॒ सं ज॑रि॒त्रे रक्षा॑ च नो॒ दम्ये॑भि॒रनी॑कैः
īḷe ca tvā yajamāno havirbhirīḷe sakhitvaṃ sumatiṃ nikāmaḥ devairavo mimīhi saṃ jaritre rakṣā ca no damyebhiranīkaiḥ
O sacrificer, with oblation I call you; may friendship and right thought be desired. Hear us, gods, protect us, O guardians, with many restraints.

उ॒प॒क्षे॒तार॒स्तव॑ सुप्रणी॒तेऽग्ने॒ विश्वा॑नि॒ धन्या॒ दधा॑नाः । सु॒रेत॑सा॒ श्रव॑सा॒ तुञ्ज॑माना अ॒भि ष्या॑म पृतना॒यूँरदे॑वान्
upakṣetārastava supraṇīte'gne viśvāni dhanyā dadhānāḥ suretasā śravasā tuñjamānā abhi ṣyāma pṛtanāyūm̐radevān
May your well-ordered offerings prosper, Agni, and bestow all riches. By the fame of songs and listening averse, may we approach the gods with devotion and obtain protection.

आ दे॒वाना॑मभवः के॒तुर॑ग्ने म॒न्द्रो विश्वा॑नि॒ काव्या॑नि वि॒द्वान् । प्रति॒ मर्ता॑ँ अवासयो॒ दमू॑ना॒ अनु॑ दे॒वान्र॑थि॒रो या॑सि॒ साध॑न्
ā devānāmabhavaḥ keturagne mandro viśvāni kāvyāni vidvān prati martām̐ avāsayo damūnā anu devānrathiro yāsi sādhan
O Agni, what banners of the gods arose? The wise know all the hymns. In presence of mortals, by mighty bonds, follow the gods’ chariot — attain the goal.

नि दु॑रो॒णे अ॒मृतो॒ मर्त्या॑नां॒ राजा॑ ससाद वि॒दथा॑नि॒ साध॑न् । घृ॒तप्र॑तीक उर्वि॒या व्य॑द्यौद॒ग्निर्विश्वा॑नि॒ काव्या॑नि वि॒द्वान्
ni duroṇe amṛto martyānāṃ rājā sasāda vidathāni sādhan ghṛtapratīka urviyā vyadyaudagnirviśvāni kāvyāni vidvān
Not hard to find, immortal among mortals, the king sat and performed sacrifices; like clarified butter in form, the fire, bestower of wealth, spread forth all poetic lore, the wise one.

आ नो॑ गहि स॒ख्येभिः॑ शि॒वेभि॑र्म॒हान्म॒हीभि॑रू॒तिभिः॑ सर॒ण्यन् । अ॒स्मे र॒यिं ब॑हु॒लं संत॑रुत्रं सु॒वाचं॑ भा॒गं य॒शसं॑ कृधी नः
ā no gahi sakhyebhiḥ śivebhirmahānmahībhirūtibhiḥ saraṇyan asme rayiṃ bahulaṃ saṃtarutraṃ suvācaṃ bhāgaṃ yaśasaṃ kṛdhī naḥ
Bring us, O mighty ones, with friendly, auspicious, earth-protecting forces; grant us abundant royal wealth, radiant fame and a share of glorious fortune.

etā te agne janimā sanāni pra pūrvyāya nūtanāni vocam mahānti vṛṣṇe savanā kṛtemā janmañjanmannihito jātavedāḥ
These, O Agni, are your generations—old and new—thus you declared; mighty are the bounties born of the herds, the born-of-births possess great offspring, O knower.

जन्म॑ञ्जन्म॒न्निहि॑तो जा॒तवे॑दा वि॒श्वामि॑त्रेभिरिध्यते॒ अज॑स्रः । तस्य॑ व॒यं सु॑म॒तौ य॒ज्ञिय॒स्यापि॑ भ॒द्रे सौ॑मन॒से स्या॑म
janmañjanmannihito jātavedā viśvāmitrebhiridhyate ajasraḥ tasya vayaṃ sumatau yajñiyasyāpi bhadre saumanase syāma
Born-of-births, born-of-births, O knower, are invoked by the universal friends without ceasing; may we, in the wise mind of sacrifice, be of good, gracious soul.

इ॒मं य॒ज्ञं स॑हसाव॒न्त्वं नो॑ देव॒त्रा धे॑हि सुक्रतो॒ ररा॑णः । प्र यं॑सि होतर्बृह॒तीरिषो॒ नोऽग्ने॒ महि॒ द्रवि॑ण॒मा य॑जस्व
imaṃ yajñaṃ sahasāvantvaṃ no devatrā dhehi sukrato rarāṇaḥ pra yaṃsi hotarbṛhatīriṣo no'gne mahi draviṇamā yajasva
May this sacrifice, together with your thousands, O gods, grant us the excellent priestly portion; to the great sacrificer bring the oblation, Agni, and bestow wealth upon us—make our worship successful.

इळा॑मग्ने पुरु॒दंसं॑ स॒निं गोः श॑श्वत्त॒मं हव॑मानाय साध । स्यान्नः॑ सू॒नुस्तन॑यो वि॒जावाग्ने॒ सा ते॑ सुम॒तिर्भू॑त्व॒स्मे
iḷāmagne purudaṃsaṃ saniṃ goḥ śaśvattamaṃ havamānāya sādha syānnaḥ sūnustanayo vijāvāgne sā te sumatirbhūtvasme
Agni, accept Ila, the man-slaying, the best of cows, constantly offered in the rite; may she be to us a child-bearing mother, O Agni, grant her to us as a source of good counsel.
