ya indra somapātamo madaḥ śaviṣṭha cetati yenā haṃsi nya1triṇaṃ tamīmahe
He by whom Indra, first of Soma-drinkers, is pleased, whom we honor as the protector of delight—

yenā daśagvamadhriguṃ vepayantaṃ svarṇaram yenā samudramāvithā tamīmahe
By whom he makes the ten-sided golden (thing) tremble like a fierce one, by whom he has stirred the sea—we honor that one.

By whom he urged the mighty Sindhu like chariots in their course—we honor the path to immortality.

imaṃ stomamabhiṣṭaye ghṛtaṃ na pūtamadrivaḥ yenā nu sadya ojasā vavakṣitha
Offer this hymn with clarified butter for the wished-for gain, by which the active ones straightway endowed us with vigour.

Pour forth this praise like the sea fills its depths; Indra revealed all with his outpourings.

May that deity who is our comrade from afar make us friendly; he who brings down the rain of heaven revealed it.

व॒व॒क्षुर॑स्य के॒तवो॑ उ॒त वज्रो॒ गभ॑स्त्योः । यत्सूर्यो॒ न रोद॑सी॒ अव॑र्धयत्
vavakṣurasya ketavo uta vajro gabhastyoḥ yatsūryo na rodasī avardhayat
They proclaimed his banners and the thunderbolt from the womb of strength, by which the sun brightened not the dawn.

yadi pravṛddha satpate sahasraṃ mahiṣām̐ aghaḥ āditta indriyaṃ mahi pra vāvṛdhe
If the mighty herd of cattle grows a thousandfold, O lord, may Indra increase that greatness for the eye-sense.

indraḥ sūryasya raśmibhirnyarśasānamoṣati agnirvaneva sāsahiḥ pra vāvṛdhe
Indra, with the sun’s rays, measured out the beam; Agni in the forest increased like a companion for the eye.

iyaṃ ta ṛtviyāvatī dhītireti navīyasī saparyantī purupriyā mimīta it
She is the season-bringing, prudent, newly-gotten thought; beloved among men, she advances thus.

garbho yajñasya devayuḥ kratuṃ punīta ānuṣak stomairindrasya vāvṛdhe mimīta it
The womb of the sacrifice, divine atmosphere, the rite purified, the duly performed; for Indra’s hymn they increased thus.

sanirmitrasya papratha indraḥ somasya pītaye prācī vāśīva sunvate mimīta it
From Sanir and Mitra came the first, Indra for Soma’s drinking; the eastern ones, O Vasishtha, increased thus.

Which priestly men, bright with hymn and chant, did not drink the clarified butter of the misbeliever’s seat.

uta svarāje aditiḥ stomamindrāya jījanat purupraśastamūtaya ṛtasya yat
Or Aditi herself in her own realm strove the hymn for Indra; praised most among men, she was moved by Rta.

abhi vahnaya ūtaye'nūṣata praśastaye na deva vivratā harī ṛtasya yat
Approaching the bright fire for the song, duly performing the rite for praise; not a god withheld the mighty law.

yatsomamindra viṣṇavi yadvā gha trita āptye yadvā marutsu mandase samindubhiḥ
What Soma to Indra or to Vishnu, what oblation for attainment; what in the Maruts was gentle with the waters.

यद्वा॑ शक्र परा॒वति॑ समु॒द्रे अधि॒ मन्द॑से । अ॒स्माक॒मित्सु॒ते र॑णा॒ समिन्दु॑भिः
yadvā śakra parāvati samudre adhi mandase asmākamitsute raṇā samindubhiḥ
What when Shakra went beyond the sea he appeased gently; in our battles those were increased with the waters.

What of the noble sung, grown great, belonging to the sacrificer’s lord; in the hymn where you delight amid the waters.

devaṃdevaṃ vo'vasa indramindraṃ gṛṇīṣaṇi adhā yajñāya turvaṇe vyānaśuḥ
God of gods, I name Indra Indra for you; beneath, for sacrifice, the swift ones spread in the glades.

By sacrifices, by sacrificial possessors, by Somes and by Soma-offerings, by the priests increase Indra, O swift ones.

mahīrasya praṇītayaḥ pūrvīruta praśastayaḥ viśvā vasūni dāśuṣe vyānaśuḥ
The rich provisions of earth, the ancient praised offerings, all dwellings gave to the decas, O swift ones.

इन्द्रं॑ वृ॒त्राय॒ हन्त॑वे दे॒वासो॑ दधिरे पु॒रः । इन्द्रं॒ वाणी॑रनूषता॒ समोज॑से
indraṃ vṛtrāya hantave devāso dadhire puraḥ indraṃ vāṇīranūṣatā samojase
They set Indra to slay Vritra, the gods placed him in front; Indra, fair in speech, stood up together in combat.

mahāntaṃ mahinā vayaṃ stomebhirhavanaśrutam arkairabhi pra ṇonumaḥ samojase
We invoke with oblations the great, mighty one of the earth, known by the hymns of sacrifice; with radiances we called him together in union.

न यं वि॑वि॒क्तो रोद॑सी॒ नान्तरि॑क्षाणि व॒ज्रिण॑म् । अमा॒दिद॑स्य तित्विषे॒ समोज॑सः
na yaṃ vivikto rodasī nāntarikṣāṇi vajriṇam amādidasya titviṣe samojasaḥ
Not for him the solitary dawn nor the intervening skies that wield the thunderbolt; from that birth the pair of vital forces came forth together.

yadindra pṛtanājye devāstvā dadhire puraḥ āditte haryatā harī vavakṣatuḥ
If Indra, by his mighty strength, placed the gods before him like firstlings, then the bright conquests of the sun were borne away brought near.

When Vritra was pierced open by the rivers, slain was the thunder-weapon that bound; then the bright conquests of the sun were borne away.

yadā te viṣṇurojasā trīṇi padā vicakrame āditte haryatā harī vavakṣatuḥ
When mighty Vishnu with radiant strength traversed three steps, then the bright conquests of the sun were borne away.

When your Maruts, with the Vṛṣṭi meter, stood in order, then all the worlds of the radiant ones shone forth.

When they set the shining sun in the sky, the brilliant light-bearers were established; then all the worlds of the radiant ones shone forth.

This praise Indra spoke with inspired thoughts to the priestly men; he placed a joyous welcome at the foot of the beloved abode.

यद॑स्य॒ धाम॑नि प्रि॒ये स॑मीची॒नासो॒ अस्व॑रन् । नाभा॑ य॒ज्ञस्य॑ दो॒हना॒ प्राध्व॒रे
yadasya dhāmani priye samīcīnāso asvaran nābhā yajñasya dohanā prādhvare
Whose dwellings pleased him, the neighboring ones answering with voiced horses — not the belly of the sacrifice will yield the milking; he placed it at the foot.

सु॒वीर्यं॒ स्वश्व्यं॑ सु॒गव्य॑मिन्द्र दद्धि नः । होते॑व पू॒र्वचि॑त्तये॒ प्राध्व॒रे
suvīryaṃ svaśvyaṃ sugavyamindra daddhi naḥ hoteva pūrvacittaye prādhvare
Grant us, Indra, your prowess, your steeds, your song; be priest for the former thought, place it at the foot.
