ह॒विष्पान्त॑म॒जरं॑ स्व॒र्विदि॑ दिवि॒स्पृश्याहु॑तं॒ जुष्ट॑म॒ग्नौ । तस्य॒ भर्म॑णे॒ भुव॑नाय दे॒वा धर्म॑णे॒ कं स्व॒धया॑ पप्रथन्त
haviṣpāntamajaraṃ svarvidi divispṛśyāhutaṃ juṣṭamagnau tasya bharmaṇe bhuvanāya devā dharmaṇe kaṃ svadhayā paprathanta
They called the immortal, long-lived Havis-panta (the oblation-filled one) as heaven’s own, touching the sky, invoked and beloved in Agni. For his protection the gods, for the world’s welfare, who with sacrificial offering did they obtain with svadhā?

gīrṇaṃ bhuvanaṃ tamasāpagūḷhamāviḥ svarabhavajjāte agnau tasya devāḥ pṛthivī dyaurutāpo'raṇayannoṣadhīḥ sakhye asya
The wide world, hidden in darkness, the inward fire arose from the voice in Agni. For him the gods made earth, heaven, sun, and dawn, and plants as his companions.

दे॒वेभि॒र्न्वि॑षि॒तो य॒ज्ञिये॑भिर॒ग्निं स्तो॑षाण्य॒जरं॑ बृ॒हन्त॑म् । यो भा॒नुना॑ पृथि॒वीं द्यामु॒तेमामा॑त॒तान॒ रोद॑सी अ॒न्तरि॑क्षम्
devebhirnviṣito yajñiyebhiragniṃ stoṣāṇyajaraṃ bṛhantam yo bhānunā pṛthivīṃ dyāmutemāmātatāna rodasī antarikṣam
Poured by the gods with devotional rites, they praised the venerable, mighty Agni with sacred oblations. By his radiant light he revealed earth and heaven, and he traversed the mid-air with moving splendour.

yo hotāsītprathamo devajuṣṭo yaṃ samāñjannājyenā vṛṇānāḥ sa patatrītvaraṃ sthā jagadyacchvātramagnirakṛṇojjātavedāḥ
He who was the first to offer the oblation, tasted by the gods, whom the sacrificers invoked in the sharing of ghee—he established the world’s order, stood as the lord of the altar, Agni made him born of Veda.

यज्जा॑तवेदो॒ भुव॑नस्य मू॒र्धन्नति॑ष्ठो अग्ने स॒ह रो॑च॒नेन॑ । तं त्वा॑हेम म॒तिभि॑र्गी॒र्भिरु॒क्थैः स य॒ज्ञियो॑ अभवो रोदसि॒प्राः
yajjātavedo bhuvanasya mūrdhannatiṣṭho agne saha rocanena taṃ tvāhema matibhirgīrbhirukthaiḥ sa yajñiyo abhavo rodasiprāḥ
The knower of births (Jātavedas) upholds the world’s summit, O Agni, together with splendour. We invoke you with minds, with words and hymns; by these rites you became the sacrificer, O radiant one.

मू॒र्धा भु॒वो भ॑वति॒ नक्त॑म॒ग्निस्ततः॒ सूर्यो॑ जायते प्रा॒तरु॒द्यन् । मा॒यामू॒ तु य॒ज्ञिया॑नामे॒तामपो॒ यत्तूर्णि॒श्चर॑ति प्रजा॒नन्
mūrdhā bhuvo bhavati naktamagnistataḥ sūryo jāyate prātarudyan māyāmū tu yajñiyānāmetāmapo yattūrṇiścarati prajānan
The summit became the world; Agni then the night; thereafter the sun was born at dawn. But perhaps these waters of the sacrificers, which wander about, sustain the peoples.

दृ॒शेन्यो॒ यो म॑हि॒ना समि॒द्धोऽरो॑चत दि॒वियो॑निर्वि॒भावा॑ । तस्मि॑न्न॒ग्नौ सू॑क्तवा॒केन॑ दे॒वा ह॒विर्विश्व॒ आजु॑हवुस्तनू॒पाः
dṛśenyo yo mahinā samiddho'rocata diviyonirvibhāvā tasminnagnau sūktavākena devā havirviśva ājuhavustanūpāḥ
He who by sight was purified among the great, shone forth, the heavenly, outwardly self-revealing. In that Agni the gods offered hymns and oblations; across all the worlds they poured forth vital nourishment.

सू॒क्त॒वा॒कं प्र॑थ॒ममादिद॒ग्निमादिद्ध॒विर॑जनयन्त दे॒वाः । स ए॑षां य॒ज्ञो अ॑भवत्तनू॒पास्तं द्यौर्वे॑द॒ तं पृ॑थि॒वी तमापः॑
sūktavākaṃ prathamamādidagnimādiddhavirajanayanta devāḥ sa eṣāṃ yajño abhavattanūpāstaṃ dyaurveda taṃ pṛthivī tamāpaḥ
They first invoked the vocal hymn as Agni, the leader, and the gods brought him forth. This was their sacrifice: the bodily offerings—heaven knew it, the earth, and the waters.

yaṃ devāso'janayantāgniṃ yasminnājuhavurbhuvanāni viśvā so arciṣā pṛthivīṃ dyāmutemāmṛjūyamāno atapanmahitvā
They who begot Agni, by whom all worlds were invoked—he kindled worlds with splendor; he rises up with radiance, striving mightily.

stomena hi divi devāso agnimajījanañchaktibhī rodasiprām tamū akṛṇvantredhā bhuve kaṃ sa oṣadhīḥ pacati viśvarūpāḥ
By the hymn indeed in heaven the gods uplifted Agni; the mighty ones stirred the earliest dawn. These they set in the world: which plant cooks all shapes of beings.

yadedenamadadhuryajñiyāso divi devāḥ sūryamāditeyam yadā cariṣṇū mithunāvabhūtāmāditprāpaśyanbhuvanāni viśvā
By this they placed the heavenly Agni, O sacrificers, the sun Aditi’s son. When the pair became united and moved, the wide worlds were seen.

विश्व॑स्मा अ॒ग्निं भुव॑नाय दे॒वा वै॑श्वान॒रं के॒तुमह्ना॑मकृण्वन् । आ यस्त॒तानो॒षसो॑ विभा॒तीरपो॑ ऊर्णोति॒ तमो॑ अ॒र्चिषा॒ यन्
viśvasmā agniṃ bhuvanāya devā vaiśvānaraṃ ketumahnāmakṛṇvan ā yastatānoṣaso vibhātīrapo ūrṇoti tamo arciṣā yan
The gods fashioned Agni for the world, the all-blazing Vaishvanara, making a banner of the day. He who labours with his shining, waters and fires spread light; that which is darkness he made into radiance.

वै॒श्वा॒न॒रं क॒वयो॑ य॒ज्ञिया॑सो॒ऽग्निं दे॒वा अ॑जनयन्नजु॒र्यम् । नक्ष॑त्रं प्र॒त्नममि॑नच्चरि॒ष्णु य॒क्षस्याध्य॑क्षं तवि॒षं बृ॒हन्त॑म्
vaiśvānaraṃ kavayo yajñiyāso'gniṃ devā ajanayannajuryam nakṣatraṃ pratnamaminaccariṣṇu yakṣasyādhyakṣaṃ taviṣaṃ bṛhantam
The poets of the sacrificers invoked Vaishvanara Agni and offered the oblation. The stellar host turns early; the guardian of the sacrificial guest, the mighty Ṛtviṣ became great.

वै॒श्वा॒न॒रं वि॒श्वहा॑ दीदि॒वांसं॒ मन्त्रै॑र॒ग्निं क॒विमच्छा॑ वदामः । यो म॑हि॒म्ना प॑रिब॒भूवो॒र्वी उ॒तावस्ता॑दु॒त दे॒वः प॒रस्ता॑त्
vaiśvānaraṃ viśvahā dīdivāṃsaṃ mantrairagniṃ kavimacchā vadāmaḥ yo mahimnā paribabhūvorvī utāvastāduta devaḥ parastāt
We speak of Vaishvanara, wide-ruling, who illumines the heavens with mantras. By whose greatness he surrounded the atmosphere and the gods above and below.

द्वे स्रु॒ती अ॑शृणवं पितॄ॒णाम॒हं दे॒वाना॑मु॒त मर्त्या॑नाम् । ताभ्या॑मि॒दं विश्व॒मेज॒त्समे॑ति॒ यद॑न्त॒रा पि॒तरं॑ मा॒तरं॑ च
dve srutī aśaṛṇavaṃ pitṝṇāmahaṃ devānāmuta martyānām tābhyāmidaṃ viśvamejatsameti yadantarā pitaraṃ mātaraṃ ca
Two truths I heard from the fathers: I call one divine, the other mortal. By these two the universe is won; that which lies between father and mother.

dve samīcī bibhṛtaścarantaṃ śīrṣato jātaṃ manasā vimṛṣṭam sa pratyaṅviśvā bhuvanāni tasthāvaprayucchantaraṇirbhrājamānaḥ
Twofold in their might, they went round, born from the head, conceived in mind. He, the all-pervading, established the worlds; they stood forth, resplendent moving in their paths.

yatrā vadete avaraḥ paraśca yajñanyoḥ kataro nau vi veda ā śekuritsadhamādaṃ sakhāyo nakṣanta yajñaṃ ka idaṃ vi vocat
Where one speaks of the inferior and the other of the superior of the two sacrifices—who truly knows their distinction? O seers, friends, the starry ones, who praised the sacrifice—who among them declared it?

katyagnayaḥ kati sūryāsaḥ katyuṣāsaḥ katyu svidāpaḥ nopaspijaṃ vaḥ pitaro vadāmi pṛcchāmi vaḥ kavayo vidmane kam
How many Agnis, how many Suns, how many Dawns, how many Fires of the heavens? Fathers, I ask you who are wise: tell us, O seers, what is the measure?

या॒व॒न्मा॒त्रमु॒षसो॒ न प्रती॑कं सुप॒र्ण्यो॒३॒॑ वस॑ते मातरिश्वः । ताव॑द्दधा॒त्युप॑ य॒ज्ञमा॒यन्ब्रा॑ह्म॒णो होतु॒रव॑रो नि॒षीद॑न्
yāvanmātramuṣaso na pratīkaṃ suparṇyo3 vasate mātariśvaḥ tāvaddadhātyupa yajñamāyanbrāhmaṇo hoturavaro niṣīdan
As long as her span remains, the bird with wide wings dwells in the interior of the atmosphere. They two gave this as the measure by Yajña’s rule: let the Brahmin sit as priest, the best one.
