अस॒त्सु मे॑ जरितः॒ साभि॑वे॒गो यत्सु॑न्व॒ते यज॑मानाय॒ शिक्ष॑म् । अना॑शीर्दाम॒हम॑स्मि प्रह॒न्ता स॑त्य॒ध्वृतं॑ वृजिना॒यन्त॑मा॒भुम्
asatsu me jaritaḥ sābhivego yatsunvate yajamānāya śikṣam anāśīrdāmahamasmi prahantā satyadhvṛtaṃ vṛjināyantamābhum
In the untrue I have aged; the vigorous force which hastens to the sacrificer is the lesson. I am the giver of undying gifts, slayer, upheld by truth, binding the herd to the earth.

यदीद॒हं यु॒धये॑ सं॒नया॒न्यदे॑वयून्त॒न्वा॒३॒॑ शूशु॑जानान् । अ॒मा ते॒ तुम्रं॑ वृष॒भं प॑चानि ती॒व्रं सु॒तं प॑ञ्चद॒शं नि षि॑ञ्चम्
yadīdahaṃ yudhaye saṃnayānyadevayūntanvā3 śūśujānān amā te tumraṃ vṛṣabhaṃ pacāni tīvraṃ sutaṃ pañcadaśaṃ ni ṣiñcam
If I had fought among men, I would have slain the hostile, tearing the close ranks of the shooṣajānas. I would have pierced for you the tawny bull, cut its intense sinew, and sprinkled fifteen drops.

नाहं तं वे॑द॒ य इति॒ ब्रवी॒त्यदे॑वयून्स॒मर॑णे जघ॒न्वान् । य॒दावाख्य॑त्स॒मर॑ण॒मृघा॑व॒दादिद्ध॑ मे वृष॒भा प्र ब्रु॑वन्ति
nāhaṃ taṃ veda ya iti bravītyadevayūnsamaraṇe jaghanvān yadāvākhyatsamaraṇamṛghāvadādiddha me vṛṣabhā pra bruvanti
I do not know that he said, 'I am so,' —the hostile in battle struck. When the declared fight was named, the bulls, mighty, besought and told me.

yadajñāteṣu vṛjaneṣvāsaṃ viśve sato maghavāno ma āsan jināmi vetkṣema ā santamābhuṃ pra taṃ kṣiṇāṃ parvate pādagṛhya
When in the unknown folds of the herds all the generous hosts were present, I perceived welfare: I took the weakened ones to the hills, seizing them by the feet.

na vā u māṃ vṛjane vārayante na parvatāso yadahaṃ manasye mama svanātkṛdhukarṇo bhayāta evedanu dyūnkiraṇaḥ samejāt
Nor do the mountains ward me off in the herds when I think. From my own sound a sharp-eared fear arose; the ray of heaven trembled.

दर्श॒न्न्वत्र॑ शृत॒पाँ अ॑नि॒न्द्रान्बा॑हु॒क्षदः॒ शर॑वे॒ पत्य॑मानान् । घृषुं॑ वा॒ ये नि॑नि॒दुः सखा॑य॒मध्यू॒ न्वे॑षु प॒वयो॑ ववृत्युः
darśannvatra śaṛtapām̐ anindrānbāhukṣadaḥ śarave patyamānān ghṛṣuṃ vā ye niniduḥ sakhāyamadhyū nveṣu pavayo vavṛtyuḥ
They saw here the ear-bearing singers, indra-like, with broad shoulders, launching arrows. Those who smote the oil they sank; friends sought them, the winds came about.

Two breathings I saw, one former, another later; two airs surrounded that which was not—who beyond it measured the dusk of its dust?

गावो॒ यवं॒ प्रयु॑ता अ॒र्यो अ॑क्ष॒न्ता अ॑पश्यं स॒हगो॑पा॒श्चर॑न्तीः । हवा॒ इद॒र्यो अ॒भितः॒ समा॑य॒न्किय॑दासु॒ स्वप॑तिश्छन्दयाते
gāvo yavaṃ prayutā aryo akṣantā apaśyaṃ sahagopāścarantīḥ havā idaryo abhitaḥ samāyankiyadāsu svapatiśchandayāte
Cows and barley followed, the noble ones looking on; they saw the companion-herdsmen binding together. The air of the neighbor came near, they offered gifts with song to the house-lord.

saṃ yadvayaṃ yavasādo janānāmahaṃ yavāda urvajre antaḥ atrā yukto'vasātāramicchādatho ayuktaṃ yunajadvavanvān
As when we sow barley, O people, I am within the fertile field. Here joined I desired settlement; in the unjoined the woman bore calves in the valleys.

अत्रेदु॑ मे मंससे स॒त्यमु॒क्तं द्वि॒पाच्च॒ यच्चतु॑ष्पात्संसृ॒जानि॑ । स्त्री॒भिर्यो अत्र॒ वृष॑णं पृत॒न्यादयु॑द्धो अस्य॒ वि भ॑जानि॒ वेदः॑
atredu me maṃsase satyamuktaṃ dvipācca yaccatuṣpātsaṃsṛjāni strībhiryo atra vṛṣaṇaṃ pṛtanyādayuddho asya vi bhajāni vedaḥ
To this my thought spoke truly: two kinds and fourfold which the priest created. Among women here war split the bull; the Veda divided its portions.

यस्या॑न॒क्षा दु॑हि॒ता जात्वास॒ कस्तां वि॒द्वाँ अ॒भि म॑न्याते अ॒न्धाम् । क॒त॒रो मे॒निं प्रति॒ तं मु॑चाते॒ य ईं॒ वहा॑ते॒ य ईं॑ वा वरे॒यात्
yasyānakṣā duhitā jātvāsa kastāṃ vidvām̐ abhi manyāte andhām kataro meniṃ prati taṃ mucāte ya īṃ vahāte ya īṃ vā vareyāt
Whose milch kine were milked at birth—who knows that? Who deems that blind? Who frees my mind toward him who bears her or who would prefer her?

किय॑ती॒ योषा॑ मर्य॒तो व॑धू॒योः परि॑प्रीता॒ पन्य॑सा॒ वार्ये॑ण । भ॒द्रा व॒धूर्भ॑वति॒ यत्सु॒पेशाः॑ स्व॒यं सा मि॒त्रं व॑नुते॒ जने॑ चित्
kiyatī yoṣā maryato vadhūyoḥ pariprītā panyasā vāryeṇa bhadrā vadhūrbhavati yatsupeśāḥ svayaṃ sā mitraṃ vanute jane cit
How many married women are esteemed beloved of a bride? With maidens and the choice cup, good brides become: where they approach, she makes a friend and cherishes the folk.

प॒त्तो ज॑गार प्र॒त्यञ्च॑मत्ति शी॒र्ष्णा शिरः॒ प्रति॑ दधौ॒ वरू॑थम् । आसी॑न ऊ॒र्ध्वामु॒पसि॑ क्षिणाति॒ न्य॑ङ्ङुत्ता॒नामन्वे॑ति॒ भूमि॑म्
patto jagāra pratyañcamatti śīrṣṇā śiraḥ prati dadhau varūtham āsīna ūrdhvāmupasi kṣiṇāti nyaṅṅuttānāmanveti bhūmim
The falling partner stretches forth, places the head upon the summit. Seated aloft he sinks from above; the earth follows those who have been burst.

बृ॒हन्न॑च्छा॒यो अ॑पला॒शो अर्वा॑ त॒स्थौ मा॒ता विषि॑तो अत्ति॒ गर्भः॑ । अ॒न्यस्या॑ व॒त्सं रि॑ह॒ती मि॑माय॒ कया॑ भु॒वा नि द॑धे धे॒नुरूधः॑
bṛhannacchāyo apalāśo arvā tasthau mātā viṣito atti garbhaḥ anyasyā vatsaṃ rihatī mimāya kayā bhuvā ni dadhe dhenurūdhaḥ
A great sheath, like broad leaves, stood firm—mother impregnated, the embryo grew. Another's calf she bore away; by what means did the cow, ridden, place it in her womb?

स॒प्त वी॒रासो॑ अध॒रादुदा॑यन्न॒ष्टोत्त॒रात्ता॒त्सम॑जग्मिर॒न्ते । नव॑ प॒श्चाता॑त्स्थिवि॒मन्त॑ आय॒न्दश॒ प्राक्सानु॒ वि ति॑र॒न्त्यश्नः॑
sapta vīrāso adharādudāyannaṣṭottarāttātsamajagmirante nava paścātātsthivimanta āyandaśa prāksānu vi tirantyaśnaḥ
Seven heroes rose from below, eight came from above and met together; nine stood behind, and ten in front—they bore on, crossing the threshold, the food and offerings.

द॒शा॒नामेकं॑ कपि॒लं स॑मा॒नं तं हि॑न्वन्ति॒ क्रत॑वे॒ पार्या॑य । गर्भं॑ मा॒ता सुधि॑तं व॒क्षणा॒स्ववे॑नन्तं तु॒षय॑न्ती बिभर्ति
daśānāmekaṃ kapilaṃ samānaṃ taṃ hinvanti kratave pāryāya garbhaṃ mātā sudhitaṃ vakṣaṇāsvavenantaṃ tuṣayantī bibharti
One of ten is a single humped camel; they equally smite that one in the sacrifice’s rounds. The mother bears the conceived, attentive; nursing and cherishing, she sustains it.

पीवा॑नं मे॒षम॑पचन्त वी॒रा न्यु॑प्ता अ॒क्षा अनु॑ दी॒व आ॑सन् । द्वा धनुं॑ बृह॒तीम॒प्स्व१॒॑न्तः प॒वित्र॑वन्ता चरतः पु॒नन्ता॑
pīvānaṃ meṣamapacanta vīrā nyuptā akṣā anu dīva āsan dvā dhanuṃ bṛhatīmapsva1ntaḥ pavitravantā carataḥ punantā
They drank the sheep’s milk; the heroes, resting, set down their eyes and watched by day. Two great bows among waters, holy, moving, they make pure again.

वि क्रो॑श॒नासो॒ विष्व॑ञ्च आय॒न्पचा॑ति॒ नेमो॑ न॒हि पक्ष॑द॒र्धः । अ॒यं मे॑ दे॒वः स॑वि॒ता तदा॑ह॒ द्र्व॑न्न॒ इद्व॑नवत्स॒र्पिर॑न्नः
vi krośanāso viṣvañca āyanpacāti nemo nahi pakṣadardhaḥ ayaṃ me devaḥ savitā tadāha drvanna idvanavatsarpirannaḥ
The worldwide clangor and the iron-like rays he burns; he is not partial to any winged creature. That god Savita then cooked the food; the serpent sang in praise.

अप॑श्यं॒ ग्रामं॒ वह॑मानमा॒राद॑च॒क्रया॑ स्व॒धया॒ वर्त॑मानम् । सिष॑क्त्य॒र्यः प्र यु॒गा जना॑नां स॒द्यः शि॒श्ना प्र॑मिना॒नो नवी॑यान्
apaśyaṃ grāmaṃ vahamānamārādacakrayā svadhayā vartamānam siṣaktyaryaḥ pra yugā janānāṃ sadyaḥ śiśnā pramināno navīyān
I saw a village moving, sick, circling with the ritual wheel, offered with oblations. Tied with force, the noble one for the generations of men—immediate in his virility—he brought forth new ones by binding.

ए॒तौ मे॒ गावौ॑ प्रम॒रस्य॑ यु॒क्तौ मो षु प्र से॑धी॒र्मुहु॒रिन्म॑मन्धि । आप॑श्चिदस्य॒ वि न॑श॒न्त्यर्थं॒ सूर॑श्च म॒र्क उप॑रो बभू॒वान्
etau me gāvau pramarasya yuktau mo ṣu pra sedhīrmuhurinmamandhi āpaścidasya vi naśantyarthaṃ sūraśca marka uparo babhūvān
These two cows of mine, joined in the forest, supported my drive; they repeatedly pressed upon me. For their loss both perish—Surya became high above them and was lifted up.

अ॒यं यो वज्रः॑ पुरु॒धा विवृ॑त्तो॒ऽवः सूर्य॑स्य बृह॒तः पुरी॑षात् । श्रव॒ इदे॒ना प॒रो अ॒न्यद॑स्ति॒ तद॑व्य॒थी ज॑रि॒माण॑स्तरन्ति
ayaṃ yo vajraḥ purudhā vivṛtto'vaḥ sūryasya bṛhataḥ purīṣāt śrava idenā paro anyadasti tadavyathī jarimāṇastaranti
This thunderbolt that pierced the city’s belly came from the great Sun’s manhood. Hear: there is another beyond this; the distressed, aging pass away.

वृ॒क्षेवृ॑क्षे॒ निय॑ता मीमय॒द्गौस्ततो॒ वयः॒ प्र प॑तान्पूरु॒षादः॑ । अथे॒दं विश्वं॒ भुव॑नं भयात॒ इन्द्रा॑य सु॒न्वदृष॑ये च॒ शिक्ष॑त्
vṛkṣevṛkṣe niyatā mīmayadgaustato vayaḥ pra patānpūruṣādaḥ athedaṃ viśvaṃ bhuvanaṃ bhayāta indrāya sunvadṛṣaye ca śikṣat
Like tree upon tree arranged, cows thereafter fell from the man, the kindred. Thus this world, the realm, from fear Indra taught the noble to be vigilant.

दे॒वानां॒ माने॑ प्रथ॒मा अ॑तिष्ठन्कृ॒न्तत्रा॑देषा॒मुप॑रा॒ उदा॑यन् । त्रय॑स्तपन्ति पृथि॒वीम॑नू॒पा द्वा बृबू॑कं वहतः॒ पुरी॑षम्
devānāṃ māne prathamā atiṣṭhankṛntatrādeṣāmuparā udāyan trayastapanti pṛthivīmanūpā dvā bṛbūkaṃ vahataḥ purīṣam
The gods first stood in their might, drawing near and then rising above them. Three smote the earth around; two bore the pulsing man, carrying forth the vital seed.

सा ते॑ जी॒वातु॑रु॒त तस्य॑ विद्धि॒ मा स्मै॑ता॒दृगप॑ गूहः सम॒र्ये । आ॒विः स्वः॑ कृणु॒ते गूह॑ते बु॒सं स पा॒दुर॑स्य नि॒र्णिजो॒ न मु॑च्यते
sā te jīvāturuta tasya viddhi mā smaitādṛgapa gūhaḥ samarye āviḥ svaḥ kṛṇute gūhate busaṃ sa pādurasya nirṇijo na mucyate
May that which gives you life be known; do not let that hidden cave wound you in battle. The breath itself makes a hollow; the dung of the cavern and the foot’s filth are not released.
