क्री॒ळं वः॒ शर्धो॒ मारु॑तमन॒र्वाणं॑ रथे॒शुभ॑म् । कण्वा॑ अ॒भि प्र गा॑यत
krīḷaṃ vaḥ śardho mārutamanarvāṇaṃ ratheśubham kaṇvā abhi pra gāyata
Play, O Shardha, like the storm-wind’s swift plunder, the marut-like spoil, in the chariot—Kanva sings forth to you.

ये पृष॑तीभिरृ॒ष्टिभिः॑ सा॒कं वाशी॑भिर॒ञ्जिभिः॑ । अजा॑यन्त॒ स्वभा॑नवः
ye pṛṣatībhirṛṣṭibhiḥ sākaṃ vāśībhirañjibhiḥ ajāyanta svabhānavaḥ
Those who with mighty forces pressed the earth together, who yoked power with the conquerors of men—these made victorious their own born ones.

iheva śaṛṇva eṣāṃ kaśā hasteṣu yadvadān ni yāmañcitramṛñjate
Hear now their words here, what they speak with hands and what the wondrous one purifies.

प्र वः॒ शर्धा॑य॒ घृष्व॑ये त्वे॒षद्यु॑म्नाय शु॒ष्मिणे॑ । दे॒वत्तं॒ ब्रह्म॑ गायत
pra vaḥ śardhāya ghṛṣvaye tveṣadyumnāya śuṣmiṇe devattaṃ brahma gāyata
For your play, O Shardha, pour forth fragrance to the radiant, to the day-bright Sun; let the godlike Brahman sing it.

प्र शं॑सा॒ गोष्वघ्न्यं॑ क्री॒ळं यच्छर्धो॒ मारु॑तम् । जम्भे॒ रस॑स्य वावृधे
pra śaṃsā goṣvaghnyaṃ krīḷaṃ yacchardho mārutam jambhe rasasya vāvṛdhe
Bring forth the fruitful play that slays kine—what the Shardha gave to the Marut; may the stream of juice swell in the press.

ko vo varṣiṣṭha ā naro divaśca gmaśca dhūtayaḥ yatsīmantaṃ na dhūnutha
Who is the foremost man who rained down and went through the heavens, the cleansed one who did not smoke the borders?

नि वो॒ यामा॑य॒ मानु॑षो द॒ध्र उ॒ग्राय॑ म॒न्यवे॑ । जिही॑त॒ पर्व॑तो गि॒रिः
ni vo yāmāya mānuṣo dadhra ugrāya manyave jihīta parvato giriḥ
From you, O guards, a man became mighty; the mountain, the hill, made his brave heart firm—behold the summit sustained him.

yeṣāmajmeṣu pṛthivī jujurvām̐ iva viśpatiḥ bhiyā yāmeṣu rejate
On whose stones the earth was yoked like a wide lord; on those borders he shone forth in the terror-ways.

स्थि॒रं हि जान॑मेषां॒ वयो॑ मा॒तुर्निरे॑तवे । यत्सी॒मनु॑ द्वि॒ता शवः॑
sthiraṃ hi jānameṣāṃ vayo māturniretave yatsīmanu dvitā śavaḥ
Truly we know the steadfast ones; let our mother not withdraw; that which is steadfast—twofold is the bier.

udu tye sūnavo giraḥ kāṣṭhā ajmeṣvatnata vāśrā abhijñu yātave
Up rose the young herdsmen, the voice like wood struck on stones; the rain-clouds attained the wet pastures.

त्यं चि॑द्घा दी॒र्घं पृ॒थुं मि॒हो नपा॑त॒ममृ॑ध्रम् । प्र च्या॑वयन्ति॒ याम॑भिः
tyaṃ cidghā dīrghaṃ pṛthuṃ miho napātamamṛdhram pra cyāvayanti yāmabhiḥ
They, having spread wide and long, strike down like showers the moisture-bearing clouds; they drive away the nights with their breaths.

मरु॑तो॒ यद्ध॑ वो॒ बलं॒ जना॑ँ अचुच्यवीतन । गि॒रीँर॑चुच्यवीतन
maruto yaddha vo balaṃ janām̐ acucyavītana girīm̐racucyavītana
What strength of yours, O Maruts, the people call forth unbending; they call forth the mountain unbending.

यद्ध॒ यान्ति॑ म॒रुतः॒ सं ह॑ ब्रुव॒तेऽध्व॒न्ना । शृ॒णोति॒ कश्चि॑देषाम्
yaddha yānti marutaḥ saṃ ha bruvate'dhvannā śaṛṇoti kaścideṣām
Whatever the Maruts go to, he indeed says it on the way; someone among them hears it.

प्र या॑त॒ शीभ॑मा॒शुभिः॒ सन्ति॒ कण्वे॑षु वो॒ दुवः॑ । तत्रो॒ षु मा॑दयाध्वै
pra yāta śībhamāśubhiḥ santi kaṇveṣu vo duvaḥ tatro ṣu mādayādhvai
When you went with benign ones who are auspicious toward Kanvas, there was sorrow for you; there make them not intoxicated there.

अस्ति॒ हि ष्मा॒ मदा॑य वः॒ स्मसि॑ ष्मा व॒यमे॑षाम् । विश्वं॑ चि॒दायु॑र्जी॒वसे॑
asti hi ṣmā madāya vaḥ smasi ṣmā vayameṣām viśvaṃ cidāyurjīvase
Indeed there is for us your pride; you are our strength; live for all creatures' life and vitality.
