gāyatsāma nabhanyaṃ1 yathā verarcāma tadvāvṛdhānaṃ svarvat gāvo dhenavo barhiṣyadabdhā ā yatsadmānaṃ divyaṃ vivāsān
As the Gayat's hymn mounts to the heaven like a spreading flame, so the cattle and kine, like the sea of oblations, increase; the cows, the milch beasts, the treasure of bounty—this divine assembly is what grants the sacred wealth.

Rigveda · Chapter Mandala 1, Sukta 173 · Verse 1.173.2
arcadvṛṣā vṛṣabhiḥ sveduhavyairmṛgo nāśno ati yajjuguryāt pra mandayurmanāṃ gūrta hotā bharate maryo mithunā yajatraḥ
Cattle like bulls and oxen, bearing sweat for the sacred offering, the steed devours what the yoked ones bring. The sacrificer, filling the ritual ladle with mind, the worshipper who pairs in praise carries it.

nakṣaddhotā pari sadma mitā yanbharadgarbhamā śaradaḥ pṛthivyāḥ krandadaśvo nayamāno ruvadgaurantardūto na rodasī caradvāk
The star-god encircles the measured seat; the autumnal natures are the earth's womb. The neighing steed led along laments; the tawny courser, messenger within, utters cries and speaks with voice.

Rigveda · Chapter Mandala 1, Sukta 173 · Verse 1.173.4
tā karmāṣatarāsmai pra cyautnāni devayanto bharante jujoṣadindro dasmavarcā nāsatyeva sugmyo ratheṣṭhāḥ
These rites, a hundredfold, the gods, taking care, bear aloft. Indra, sustaining our radiance, fought; the twin-marvelous ones, best on chariots, were not lacking.

tamu ṣṭuhīndraṃ yo ha satvā yaḥ śūro maghavā yo ratheṣṭhāḥ pratīcaścidyodhīyānvṛṣaṇvānvavavruṣaścittamaso vihantā
Praise Indra who is foremost, the brave one, the generous, the best of charioteers. He who in the east fights in battle with bulls and warriors, dispersing the thick darkness.

pra yaditthā mahinā nṛbhyo astyaraṃ rodasī kakṣye3 nāsmai saṃ vivya indro vṛjanaṃ na bhūmā bharti svadhāvām̐ opaśamiva dyām
If this great fame is pleasing to men, O Indra, may it not fail me on the day of sacrifice. Indra, I invoke thee to grant increase of the herd and hold the earth; I offer the oblation as to the sky.

Rigveda · Chapter Mandala 1, Sukta 173 · Verse 1.173.7

samatsu tvā śūra satāmurāṇaṃ prapathintamaṃ paritaṃsayadhyai sajoṣasa indraṃ made kṣoṇīḥ sūriṃ cidye anumadanti vājaiḥ
In the assemblies the brave among the true ones make the great way; they surround you with praise. They grant joy to Indra; the angry ones appease him, and the strong men acclaim him with wealth.

evā hi te śaṃ savanā samudra āpo yatta āsu madanti devīḥ viśvā te anu joṣyā bhūdgauḥ sūrīm̐ścidyadi dhiṣā veṣi janān
Truly your proclamations, O gods, like floods of waters and oceans, the goddesses praise. All of you will make fertile the herds, the courageous ones and the wise, if the lords of counsel approve before men.

Rigveda · Chapter Mandala 1, Sukta 173 · Verse 1.173.9
asāma yathā suṣakhāya ena svabhiṣṭayo narāṃ na śaṃsaiḥ asadyathā na indro vandaneṣṭhāsturo na karma nayamāna ukthā
As when dry ground does not praise men's desires, so too Indra is not extolled by mere rites; he does not accept invocations led only by craving.

viṣpardhaso narāṃ na śaṃsairasmākāsadindro vajrahastaḥ mitrāyuvo na pūrpatiṃ suśiṣṭau madhyāyuva upa śikṣanti yajñaiḥ
Not praised by quarrels, our men—Indra of thunderbolt-hand is ours. The two Mitras, duly guarding, train the youthful in perfect duty with rituals.

yajño hi ṣmendraṃ kaścidṛndhañjuhurāṇaścinmanasā pariyan tīrthe nācchā tātṛṣāṇamoko dīrgho na sidhramā kṛṇotyadhvā
Truly sacrifice bears Indra; some one poured libations for him, the nobles encircled with mind. Not eager for ford and sacred place, he does not make a long way nor a sudden path across.
Rigveda 1.173.12

mo ṣū ṇa indrātra pṛtsu devairasti hi ṣmā te śuṣminnavayāḥ mahaścidyasya mīḷhuṣo yavyā haviṣmato maruto vandate gīḥ
O Indra, your weapons are eager among the gods; these very nimble youthful ones are yours. The Marut praises the hymn-maker who brings plentiful oblation and strength.

eṣa stoma indra tubhyamasme etena gātuṃ harivo vido naḥ ā no vavṛtyāḥ suvitāya deva vidyāmeṣaṃ vṛjanaṃ jīradānum
This hymn to Indra is for you; by it the aware ones release us. Come to us with blessedness, O god; grant this herd, the life-giving offering, to our people.
