असा॑म॒ यथा॑ सुष॒खाय॑ एन स्वभि॒ष्टयो॑ न॒रां न शंसैः॑ । अस॒द्यथा॑ न॒ इन्द्रो॑ वन्दने॒ष्ठास्तु॒रो न कर्म॒ नय॑मान उ॒क्था
asāma yathā suṣakhāya ena svabhiṣṭayo narāṃ na śaṃsaiḥ asadyathā na indro vandaneṣṭhāsturo na karma nayamāna ukthā
As when dry ground does not praise men's desires, so too Indra is not extolled by mere rites; he does not accept invocations led only by craving.
May we be, as it were, your valued friends, O Lord, and obtain our desires, like those (who gain their objects) by the praise of princes. May Indra, propitiated by our eulogies, be brought to the sacrifice by our hymns.
So may we in this One be well befriended, well aided as it were through praise of chieftains, That Indra still may linger at our worship, as one led swift to work, to hear our praises.
