उ॒द॒प्रुतो॒ न वयो॒ रक्ष॑माणा॒ वाव॑दतो अ॒भ्रिय॑स्येव॒ घोषाः॑ । गि॒रि॒भ्रजो॒ नोर्मयो॒ मद॑न्तो॒ बृह॒स्पति॑म॒भ्य१॒॑र्का अ॑नावन्
udapruto na vayo rakṣamāṇā vāvadato abhriyasyeva ghoṣāḥ giribhrajo normayo madanto bṛhaspatimabhya1rkā anāvan
Born up, he spoke not of our guarding; the cries of the warrior’s friend rose like the godly shout. O mountains, trembling on our behalf, smear with oil and call Bṛhaspati to mind.

सं गोभि॑राङ्गिर॒सो नक्ष॑माणो॒ भग॑ इ॒वेद॑र्य॒मणं॑ निनाय । जने॑ मि॒त्रो न दम्प॑ती अनक्ति॒ बृह॑स्पते वा॒जया॒शूँरि॑वा॒जौ
saṃ gobhirāṅgiraso nakṣamāṇo bhaga ivedaryamaṇaṃ nināya jane mitro na dampatī anakti bṛhaspate vājayāśūm̐rivājau
The Angirases, yoked with cows, did not tire; like a god they drew the oblation’s prize. In the people Mitra did not break pairings; O Bṛhaspati, the two steeds clap like rivalling chariots.

सा॒ध्व॒र्या अ॑ति॒थिनी॑रिषि॒राः स्पा॒र्हाः सु॒वर्णा॑ अनव॒द्यरू॑पाः । बृह॒स्पतिः॒ पर्व॑तेभ्यो वि॒तूर्या॒ निर्गा ऊ॑पे॒ यव॑मिव स्थि॒विभ्यः॑
sādhvaryā atithinīriṣirāḥ spārhāḥ suvarṇā anavadyarūpāḥ bṛhaspatiḥ parvatebhyo vitūryā nirgā ūpe yavamiva sthivibhyaḥ
She, excellent in wealth, like a generous host, radiant, golden, of unblemished form; Brihaspati made her depart from the mountains like a nourisher, as if setting forth grain for those standing.

āpruṣāyanmadhuna ṛtasya yonimavakṣipannarka ulkāmiva dyoḥ bṛhaspatiruddharannaśmano gā bhūmyā udneva vi tvacaṃ bibheda
He spurned the honey-bearing source of Rta, as the sun hurled down like a meteor from the sky. Brihaspati, raising rocks, split the earth and cleft the surface as if tearing skin.

अप॒ ज्योति॑षा॒ तमो॑ अ॒न्तरि॑क्षादु॒द्नः शीपा॑लमिव॒ वात॑ आजत् । बृह॒स्पति॑रनु॒मृश्या॑ व॒लस्या॒भ्रमि॑व॒ वात॒ आ च॑क्र॒ आ गाः
apa jyotiṣā tamo antarikṣādudnaḥ śīpālamiva vāta ājat bṛhaspatiranumṛśyā valasyābhramiva vāta ā cakra ā gāḥ
From the mid-air light pierced forth the lamp of darkness; winds arose like a woolen fleece. Brihaspati, circling, like a cloud of foam, made the winds move and cattle graze.

य॒दा व॒लस्य॒ पीय॑तो॒ जसुं॒ भेद्बृह॒स्पति॑रग्नि॒तपो॑भिर॒र्कैः । द॒द्भिर्न जि॒ह्वा परि॑विष्ट॒माद॑दा॒विर्नि॒धीँर॑कृणोदु॒स्रिया॑णाम्
yadā valasya pīyato jasuṃ bhedbṛhaspatiragnitapobhirarkaiḥ dadbhirna jihvā pariviṣṭamādadāvirnidhīm̐rakṛṇodusriyāṇām
When the cloud’s drink was drunk and the stream was cleft by Brihaspati with sunlike fires, the waters did not imprison the tongue; they did not collect wealth for the singers of the waters.

बृह॒स्पति॒रम॑त॒ हि त्यदा॑सां॒ नाम॑ स्व॒रीणां॒ सद॑ने॒ गुहा॒ यत् । आ॒ण्डेव॑ भि॒त्त्वा श॑कु॒नस्य॒ गर्भ॒मुदु॒स्रियाः॒ पर्व॑तस्य॒ त्मना॑जत्
bṛhaspatiramata hi tyadāsāṃ nāma svarīṇāṃ sadane guhā yat āṇḍeva bhittvā śakunasya garbhamudusriyāḥ parvatasya tmanājat
Brihaspati indeed said then that which is the cave-seat of the gods’ wives. He split the egg and opened the bird’s womb; the mountain gave birth by its own might.

अश्नापि॑नद्धं॒ मधु॒ पर्य॑पश्य॒न्मत्स्यं॒ न दी॒न उ॒दनि॑ क्षि॒यन्त॑म् । निष्टज्ज॑भार चम॒सं न वृ॒क्षाद्बृह॒स्पति॑र्विर॒वेणा॑ वि॒कृत्य॑
aśnāpinaddhaṃ madhu paryapaśyanmatsyaṃ na dīna udani kṣiyantam niṣṭajjabhāra camasaṃ na vṛkṣādbṛhaspatirviraveṇā vikṛtya
He saw the honey not eaten, the fish not ruined by the flood; Brihaspati did not mix flesh with the tree, nor distort it with armor.

सोषाम॑विन्द॒त्स स्व१॒ः॑ सो अ॒ग्निं सो अ॒र्केण॒ वि ब॑बाधे॒ तमां॑सि । बृह॒स्पति॒र्गोव॑पुषो व॒लस्य॒ निर्म॒ज्जानं॒ न पर्व॑णो जभार
soṣāmavindatsa sva1ḥ so agniṃ so arkeṇa vi babādhe tamāṃsi bṛhaspatirgovapuṣo valasya nirmajjānaṃ na parvaṇo jabhāra
They beheld the swift sun and Agni with the radiant eye; Brihaspati yoked the cattle to the cloud, casting them into the abyss, not by the mountain’s burden.

हि॒मेव॑ प॒र्णा मु॑षि॒ता वना॑नि॒ बृह॒स्पति॑नाकृपयद्व॒लो गाः । अ॒ना॒नु॒कृ॒त्यम॑पु॒नश्च॑कार॒ यात्सूर्या॒मासा॑ मि॒थ उ॒च्चरा॑तः
himeva parṇā muṣitā vanāni bṛhaspatinākṛpayadvalo gāḥ anānukṛtyamapunaścakāra yātsūryāmāsā mitha uccarātaḥ
Leaves shivered in cold; the forests, compassionate Bṛhaspati’s herds, moved. He, responding, made the sun rise from the eastern height.

अ॒भि श्या॒वं न कृश॑नेभि॒रश्वं॒ नक्ष॑त्रेभिः पि॒तरो॒ द्याम॑पिंशन् । रात्र्यां॒ तमो॒ अद॑धु॒र्ज्योति॒रह॒न्बृह॒स्पति॑र्भि॒नदद्रिं॑ वि॒दद्गाः
abhi śyāvaṃ na kṛśanebhiraśvaṃ nakṣatrebhiḥ pitaro dyāmapiṃśan rātryāṃ tamo adadhurjyotirahanbṛhaspatirbhinadadriṃ vidadgāḥ
Not with tawny nor with gaunt horses nor with stars did the fathers fill the sky. At night they placed darkness; Brihaspati, bearing light, scattered the herds.

इ॒दम॑कर्म॒ नमो॑ अभ्रि॒याय॒ यः पू॒र्वीरन्वा॒नोन॑वीति । बृह॒स्पतिः॒ स हि गोभिः॒ सो अश्वैः॒ स वी॒रेभिः॒ स नृभि॑र्नो॒ वयो॑ धात्
idamakarma namo abhriyāya yaḥ pūrvīranvānonavīti bṛhaspatiḥ sa hi gobhiḥ so aśvaiḥ sa vīrebhiḥ sa nṛbhirno vayo dhāt
This is the ritual salutation to the cloud-born who goes before and who is both ancient and new. Brihaspati is he — with cows, with horses, with heroes and with men; he is our sustainer.
