Rigveda · Chapter Mandala 1, Sukta 64 · Verse 1.64.1

vṛṣṇe śardhāya sumakhāya vedhase nodhaḥ suvṛktiṃ pra bharā marudbhyaḥ apo na dhīro manasā suhastyo giraḥ samañje vidatheṣvābhuvaḥ

To Vrishṇi, to Shardha, the kindly‑faced, to Vedhas, to the bounteous—be abundant gifts brought, O Maruts. Waters and the wise in mind, with skillful hand and voice, came together in the assemblies of inspired seers.

te jajñire diva ṛṣvāsa ukṣaṇo rudrasya maryā asurā arepasaḥ pāvakāsaḥ śucayaḥ sūryā iva satvāno na drapsino ghoravarpasaḥ

They invoked the divine ones like sacrificers along the noon, the swift Rishvas, the blustering Rudra, the marvellous Asuras of the waters. Like cleansing fires, pure ones, like the sun they shone; the vital-hearted did not shrink from the dreadful noise.

yuvāno rudrā ajarā abhogghano vavakṣuradhrigāvaḥ parvatā iva dṛḷhā cidviśvā bhuvanāni pārthivā pra cyāvayanti divyāni majmanā

Young Rudras, ageless, unwearied, like slopes of mountains they inspected the herds; like mountains they, the lofty ones, pervaded the worlds and, with firm might, made the earthly things divine by their adamantine splendour.

With variegated ornaments their limbs shine; the radiant chest mounts upward like a splendid banner. Their portions the strong ones examined; together they invoked with oblations the man of heaven.

īśānakṛto dhunayo riśādaso vātānvidyutastaviṣībhirakrata duhantyūdhardivyāni dhūtayo bhūmiṃ pinvanti payasā parijrayaḥ

Formed by the sovereign, the poets (ṛṣis) of the world, winds with lightning-like splendours, struck with wrath. They milked forth the divine ones; the purified ones sustain the earth and wet her with streams of milk.

pinvantyapo marutaḥ sudānavaḥ payo ghṛtavadvidatheṣvābhuvaḥ atyaṃ na mihe vi nayanti vājinamutsaṃ duhanti stanayantamakṣitam

Waters drank, the Maruts, the youthful heroes, like streams of milk and ghee they came into being in the courses. They greatly do not admire, they do not lead away the vigorous; they milk forth the one who cannot be seen, the eyeless.

The buffalo-strong, the magicians, wondrous-shining, mountains not of ease but of bold Rudra-descendants. Like deer the tusked ones fed in the woods, their venomous might joined with the darts.

Tearful ones spoke: the hosts of wealth, heroic men, the shining—these oppressed the hostile bands. In bonds they found steadiness, not seeing the wicked; the Maruts stood firm in your chariots.

viśvavedaso rayibhiḥ samokasaḥ sammiślāsastaviṣībhirvirapśinaḥ astāra iṣuṃ dadhire gabhastyoranantaśuṣmā vṛṣakhādayo naraḥ

The all-knowing with glories, equal in might, mingled their powers; the darting, venomous ones dwelt apart. They set the flat-ones in the vats; men with bull-like strength and effulgence stood by the steeds.
