Drink this bright treasure, O son, the full-uddered milky one. I make you fearless, O kine’s herder.

From men overflowing with sacrifice the son drinks, filled round with streams. The horse is not tied in the rivers.

As the cows eat the barley, so should you enjoy the sweet portion; Indra established you in this friendship.

indra itsomapā eka indraḥ sutapā viśvāyuḥ antardevānmartyām̐śca
Indra is the one who drinks the soma; Indra alone is the sun who brings life. He measures out gods and men within.

Neither brightness nor slowness, no misfortune, nor the path of the triple‑formed, has pierced him; may he touch the kindly heart.

With cows like these other beasts do not seek the quarry among us. They strive against us with the milch‑herds.

Three somas are Indra’s—sons born for the god. In his own waning is the ascetic’s gain.

Three are the sheath‑hunters; three are the pressing ones full of strength. Together they bear the burden alike.

Pure in deeds, eminent and steadfast, they moved among milky offerings. The brave one rejoiced with gentle strength.

These somas of Indra are fierce; they are our born sons. Bright ones ask for the blessing.

हृ॒त्सु पी॒तासो॑ युध्यन्ते दु॒र्मदा॑सो॒ न सुरा॑याम् । ऊध॒र्न न॒ग्ना ज॑रन्ते
hṛtsu pītāso yudhyante durmadāso na surāyām ūdharna nagnā jarante
In hearts the golden ones contend, the insolent do not feast among the gods. They do not grow old exposed and naked.

Let the praised One be worshipped like a hero; may the splendour of the host be for you. The joyous ones advance with the heard delight.

Do not sing the Uktha over spoiled grain, nor recite the Gayatri over what is being eaten.

मा न॑ इन्द्र पीय॒त्नवे॒ मा शर्ध॑ते॒ परा॑ दाः । शिक्षा॑ शचीवः॒ शची॑भिः
mā na indra pīyatnave mā śardhate parā dāḥ śikṣā śacīvaḥ śacībhiḥ
Do not offer me Indra’s draughts; do not heap sacrifices beyond measure. Teachings are like Shachi’s sons, like Shachi herself.

We are for you for that purpose, O Indra; steadfast companions have entered you like Kanva through the Ukthas.

Never did the striker of the bolt act against the waters when they were newly set; he knew your hymn.

icchanti devāḥ sunvantaṃ na svapnāya spṛhayanti yanti pramādamatandrāḥ
The gods desire what is heard; they do not yearn for dreams. They go, careless of slumber.

Do not let ill-willed ones approach us at dawn; like a lifeless body they are born.

We know this hero for his abundant, enveloping good sense, in the threefold-born mind.

Bring forth the Kanvas with the sprinkling; we do not know the slaughters by the corpse-offerings. Fame in a hundredfold rises.

With the eldest juice for Indra, with Soma for the hero Shakra, drink, ye bearers, for the men.

He who knew and was untroubled, stirring up the horses for the charioteers, offered the prize to the singers, the cow-givers.

They poured forth many, many streams toward the draught—Soma for the hero, for the brave.

He struck down the slayer of Vritra, the best among men, coming toward us; the hundredfold praise is established.

This is Hari, Brahma-born, joined by strength, standing with comrades; the hymn was heard by the singers of speech.

svādavaḥ somā ā yāhi śrītāḥ somā ā yāhi śiprinnṛṣīvaḥ śacīvo nāyamacchā sadhamādam
Come hither, Soma of the Svadhvas, come hither, Soma of the shining ones. Speedily the vigorous, Shachi-born do not deny this true reward.

stutaśca yāstvā vardhanti mahe rādhase nṛmṇāya indra kāriṇaṃ vṛdhantaḥ
Those who praise you grow in great glory for the maker of men, Indra increases them.

giraśca yāste girvāha ukthā ca tubhyaṃ tāni satrā dadhire śavāṃsi
And those whose speech is for you — hymns and Ukthas for thee — they placed protection over the meats of the sacrificial steers.

This turtle of yours, O Vajã, the one-handed bolt-holder, bestows undying bliss of the eternal, giving joy.

In whom all were ardent, and you cared, you nourished progeny; follow the mighty Maghavan with softening zeal.

This god performed these deeds for all who hear; may the steed-bearing, generous ones bring riches.

He set in motion the chariot bearing the cows and the waters; this strong, wealthy one is your deft protector.

Beside assemblies the seer, striking down with hymns, slew Vṛtra with heroic men; the truthful one fashioned the decree.

yajadhvainaṃ priyamedhā indraṃ satrācā manasā yo bhūtsomaiḥ satyamadvā
Worship him, dear-minded, the Indra who is friend in sacrifice and thought; he, nourished by soma, is true and unvanquished.

He, famed in songs, the righteous lord, the eager, brave one—Kanva’s clan, the singers and the bounteous charioteer.

Who, when desiring, took refuge in me—O generous friend, you gave from the barns and pastures, bestowing wealth on men.

Thus the mountain-born, Kanva, noble guest, declared to me the wise assembly; the ram who came is what they led forth.

He divided instruction for him and gave fourfold united years; eight beyond are a thousand together.

Come, drink the abundant milky streams; do not restrain the hero’s bride. We have been born to make victory for men.
