सं॒व॒त्स॒रं श॑शया॒ना ब्रा॑ह्म॒णा व्र॑तचा॒रिणः॑ । वाचं॑ प॒र्जन्य॑जिन्वितां॒ प्र म॒ण्डूका॑ अवादिषुः
saṃvatsaraṃ śaśayānā brāhmaṇā vratacāriṇaḥ vācaṃ parjanyajinvitāṃ pra maṇḍūkā avādiṣuḥ
The year is the moon’s course; the brahmanas observe the vow. They chanted the speech invoking Progeny and addressed the frog.

दि॒व्या आपो॑ अ॒भि यदे॑न॒माय॒न्दृतिं॒ न शुष्कं॑ सर॒सी शया॑नम् । गवा॒मह॒ न मा॒युर्व॒त्सिनी॑नां म॒ण्डूका॑नां व॒ग्नुरत्रा॒ समे॑ति
divyā āpo abhi yadenamāyandṛtiṃ na śuṣkaṃ sarasī śayānam gavāmaha na māyurvatsinīnāṃ maṇḍūkānāṃ vagnuratrā sameti
The divine waters, brought near, do not dry like the bed that sleeps; may the cows not perish, nor the youthful frogs—may fire come to the place as it should.

यदी॑मेनाँ उश॒तो अ॒भ्यव॑र्षीत्तृ॒ष्याव॑तः प्रा॒वृष्याग॑तायाम् । अ॒ख्ख॒ली॒कृत्या॑ पि॒तरं॒ न पु॒त्रो अ॒न्यो अ॒न्यमुप॒ वद॑न्तमेति
yadīmenām̐ uśato abhyavarṣīttṛṣyāvataḥ prāvṛṣyāgatāyām akhkhalīkṛtyā pitaraṃ na putro anyo anyamupa vadantameti
If this eastern rain were to fall in abundance from the thirsty sky at the time of coming rains, even by making offerings to all, the father would not, they say, become another son to another.

अ॒न्यो अ॒न्यमनु॑ गृभ्णात्येनोर॒पां प्र॑स॒र्गे यदम॑न्दिषाताम् । म॒ण्डूको॒ यद॒भिवृ॑ष्टः॒ कनि॑ष्क॒न्पृश्निः॑ सम्पृ॒ङ्क्ते हरि॑तेन॒ वाच॑म्
anyo anyamanu gṛbhṇātyenorapāṃ prasarge yadamandiṣātām maṇḍūko yadabhivṛṣṭaḥ kaniṣkanpṛśniḥ sampṛṅkte haritena vācam
One man takes another’s place; in the outflow of waters like those that the frogs stirred up when the rain fell, the Pṛśni mixed the green speech.

यदे॑षाम॒न्यो अ॒न्यस्य॒ वाचं॑ शा॒क्तस्ये॑व॒ वद॑ति॒ शिक्ष॑माणः । सर्वं॒ तदे॑षां स॒मृधे॑व॒ पर्व॒ यत्सु॒वाचो॒ वद॑थ॒नाध्य॒प्सु
yadeṣāmanyo anyasya vācaṃ śāktasyeva vadati śikṣamāṇaḥ sarvaṃ tadeṣāṃ samṛdheva parva yatsuvāco vadathanādhyapsu
When one of them speaks the speech of another, it is indeed that of the powerful one who teaches; all that is their common prosperity is what the speaker would tell to those desiring (it).

गोमा॑यु॒रेको॑ अ॒जमा॑यु॒रेकः॒ पृश्नि॒रेको॒ हरि॑त॒ एक॑ एषाम् । स॒मा॒नं नाम॒ बिभ्र॑तो॒ विरू॑पाः पुरु॒त्रा वाचं॑ पिपिशु॒र्वद॑न्तः
gomāyureko ajamāyurekaḥ pṛśnireko harita eka eṣām samānaṃ nāma bibhrato virūpāḥ purutrā vācaṃ pipiśurvadantaḥ
One had the life of cows, one the life of goats, one the Pṛśni, one the green one — these are their ones. Bearing the same name, though differing in form, the men sought the speech and, desiring, spoke.

ब्रा॒ह्म॒णासो॑ अतिरा॒त्रे न सोमे॒ सरो॒ न पू॒र्णम॒भितो॒ वद॑न्तः । सं॒व॒त्स॒रस्य॒ तदहः॒ परि॑ ष्ठ॒ यन्म॑ण्डूकाः प्रावृ॒षीणं॑ ब॒भूव॑
brāhmaṇāso atirātre na some saro na pūrṇamabhito vadantaḥ saṃvatsarasya tadahaḥ pari ṣṭha yanmaṇḍūkāḥ prāvṛṣīṇaṃ babhūva
Brahmin folk, overnight, not like Soma, not full, spoke about the stream. That day and night of the year, say the frogs, became rain-beset.

ब्रा॒ह्म॒णासः॑ सो॒मिनो॒ वाच॑मक्रत॒ ब्रह्म॑ कृ॒ण्वन्तः॑ परिवत्स॒रीण॑म् । अ॒ध्व॒र्यवो॑ घ॒र्मिणः॑ सिष्विदा॒ना आ॒विर्भ॑वन्ति॒ गुह्या॒ न के चि॑त्
brāhmaṇāsaḥ somino vācamakrata brahma kṛṇvantaḥ parivatsarīṇam adhvaryavo gharmiṇaḥ siṣvidānā āvirbhavanti guhyā na ke cit
The Brahmins, making Soma’s speech and the force of Brahman, perform rites year after year. The priests, hot with the fire, became like secret ones; none remained hidden.

दे॒वहि॑तिं जुगुपुर्द्वाद॒शस्य॑ ऋ॒तुं नरो॒ न प्र मि॑नन्त्ये॒ते । सं॒व॒त्स॒रे प्रा॒वृष्याग॑तायां त॒प्ता घ॒र्मा अ॑श्नुवते विस॒र्गम्
devahitiṃ jugupurdvādaśasya ṛtuṃ naro na pra minantyete saṃvatsare prāvṛṣyāgatāyāṃ taptā gharmā aśnuvate visargam
The twelve-season abhorrence of the gods cannot be measured by men. In the year when the rains came, the heated warmth consumed the release.

गोमा॑युरदाद॒जमा॑युरदा॒त्पृश्नि॑रदा॒द्धरि॑तो नो॒ वसू॑नि । गवां॑ म॒ण्डूका॒ दद॑तः श॒तानि॑ सहस्रसा॒वे प्र ति॑रन्त॒ आयुः॑
gomāyuradādajamāyuradātpṛśniradāddharito no vasūni gavāṃ maṇḍūkā dadataḥ śatāni sahasrasāve pra tiranta āyuḥ
Gomāyu and Ajamāyu, Pṛśni and Dhṛta — grant us wealth. The frogs gave hundreds and thousands of cows, prolonging life in turn.
