के ष्ठा॑ नरः॒ श्रेष्ठ॑तमा॒ य एक॑एक आय॒य । प॒र॒मस्याः॑ परा॒वतः॑
ke ṣṭhā naraḥ śreṣṭhatamā ya ekaeka āyaya paramasyāḥ parāvataḥ
Who is the best man, most excellent—each one supreme in his day? Above the supreme is the far beyond.

क्व१॒॑ वोऽश्वाः॒ क्वा॒३॒॑भीश॑वः क॒थं शे॑क क॒था य॑य । पृ॒ष्ठे सदो॑ न॒सोर्यमः॑
kva1 vo'śvāḥ kvā3bhīśavaḥ kathaṃ śeka kathā yaya pṛṣṭhe sado nasoryamaḥ
Where are your horses, where your chariots and herds? How did they creak, how did they go? On the back stood the valiant like a shielded nostril.

ज॒घने॒ चोद॑ एषां॒ वि स॒क्थानि॒ नरो॑ यमुः । पु॒त्र॒कृ॒थे न जन॑यः
jaghane coda eṣāṃ vi sakthāni naro yamuḥ putrakṛthe na janayaḥ
On their loins they struck; their sinews were severed; men died. They did not beget children for offspring.

परा॑ वीरास एतन॒ मर्या॑सो॒ भद्र॑जानयः । अ॒ग्नि॒तपो॒ यथास॑थ
parā vīrāsa etana maryāso bhadrajānayaḥ agnitapo yathāsatha
These were the heroes, lofty among the peoples; they brought forth the auspicious-born. Like Agnītapas they stood fast.

सन॒त्साश्व्यं॑ प॒शुमु॒त गव्यं॑ श॒ताव॑यम् । श्या॒वाश्व॑स्तुताय॒ या दोर्वी॒रायो॑प॒बर्बृ॑हत्
sanatsāśvyaṃ paśumuta gavyaṃ śatāvayam śyāvāśvastutāya yā dorvīrāyopabarbṛhat
For the long-enduring, the cattle increased, the kine multiplied by hundreds. Praise to the black-steeds, to the doers of great deeds, the mighty amplifiers of the plain.

उ॒त त्वा॒ स्त्री शशी॑यसी पुं॒सो भ॑वति॒ वस्य॑सी । अदे॑वत्रादरा॒धसः॑
uta tvā strī śaśīyasī puṃso bhavati vasyasī adevatrādarādhasaḥ
Whether you become the moon-faced wife or the man’s kin, you are honored here; worship the beloved among these.

vi yā jānāti jasuriṃ vi tṛṣyantaṃ vi kāminam devatrā kṛṇute manaḥ
He who knows where the brave one and the thirsty lover dwell—May the gods make his mind full of desire.

उ॒त घा॒ नेमो॒ अस्तु॑तः॒ पुमा॒ँ इति॑ ब्रुवे प॒णिः । स वैर॑देय॒ इत्स॒मः
uta ghā nemo astutaḥ pumām̐ iti bruve paṇiḥ sa vairadeya itsamaḥ
Or let there be many cattle from there, O man, so says the speaker; he is a giver of friends, such is his nature.

उ॒त मे॑ऽरपद्युव॒तिर्म॑म॒न्दुषी॒ प्रति॑ श्या॒वाय॑ वर्त॒निम् । वि रोहि॑ता पुरुमी॒ळ्हाय॑ येमतु॒र्विप्रा॑य दी॒र्घय॑शसे
uta me'rapadyuvatirmamanduṣī prati śyāvāya vartanim vi rohitā purumīḷhāya yematurviprāya dīrghayaśase
She who came to me, tending my herds, circling pale for the black one—May the bright woman grant long life to the people who came here.

यो मे॑ धेनू॒नां श॒तं वैद॑दश्वि॒र्यथा॒ दद॑त् । त॒र॒न्त इ॑व मं॒हना॑
yo me dhenūnāṃ śataṃ vaidadaśviryathā dadat taranta iva maṃhanā
He who gave me a hundred cows like a steed of valour—he crosses like a mighty one among the great.

य ईं॒ वह॑न्त आ॒शुभिः॒ पिब॑न्तो मदि॒रं मधु॑ । अत्र॒ श्रवां॑सि दधिरे
ya īṃ vahanta āśubhiḥ pibanto madiraṃ madhu atra śravāṃsi dadhire
Those who carry the goddess, drinking intoxicating honey—there they made offerings of praise.

yeṣāṃ śriyādhi rodasī vibhrājante ratheṣvā divi rukma ivopari
Whose riches beam like dawn upon the chariots—they shine above like golden splendour in the sky.

Young Maruts, company of swift chariots, O you royal ones—auspicious be your coming and your return.

को वे॑द नू॒नमे॑षां॒ यत्रा॒ मद॑न्ति॒ धूत॑यः । ऋ॒तजा॑ता अरे॒पसः॑
ko veda nūnameṣāṃ yatrā madanti dhūtayaḥ ṛtajātā arepasaḥ
Who indeed knows where these, washed and born of the law, dwell? They are the offspring of Rta, the scattered ones.

यू॒यं मर्तं॑ विपन्यवः प्रणे॒तार॑ इ॒त्था धि॒या । श्रोता॑रो॒ याम॑हूतिषु
yūyaṃ martaṃ vipanyavaḥ praṇetāra itthā dhiyā śrotāro yāmahūtiṣu
You mortals, merchants, bestowers of thought thus—hearers and givers among invocations.

ते नो॒ वसू॑नि॒ काम्या॑ पुरुश्च॒न्द्रा रि॑शादसः । आ य॑ज्ञियासो ववृत्तन
te no vasūni kāmyā puruścandrā riśādasaḥ ā yajñiyāso vavṛttana
May those coveted treasures and the radiant manes of the chariot-people come to us; may they perform the rites.

ए॒तं मे॒ स्तोम॑मूर्म्ये दा॒र्भ्याय॒ परा॑ वह । गिरो॑ देवि र॒थीरि॑व
etaṃ me stomamūrmye dārbhyāya parā vaha giro devi rathīriva
I regard this hymn as a mighty gift, O darbhya woman, carry it forth like a goddess, as a speech-moving chariot.

उ॒त मे॑ वोचता॒दिति॑ सु॒तसो॑मे॒ रथ॑वीतौ । न कामो॒ अप॑ वेति मे
uta me vocatāditi sutasome rathavītau na kāmo apa veti me
And she responded to me thus, O Soma's daughter among charioteers: 'No desire repels me.'

ए॒ष क्षे॑ति॒ रथ॑वीतिर्म॒घवा॒ गोम॑ती॒रनु॑ । पर्व॑ते॒ष्वप॑श्रितः
eṣa kṣeti rathavītirmaghavā gomatīranu parvateṣvapaśritaḥ
This is called 'chariot-man', O cloud-born, following the river Gomati, sheltered on the mountains.
