huve vaḥ sudyotmānaṃ suvṛktiṃ viśāmagnimatithiṃ suprayasam mitra iva yo didhiṣāyyo bhūddeva ādeve jane jātavedāḥ
I invoke you, radiant and excellent, with well-formed praise, Agni, companion of the assembly, giver of best outcomes. Like Mitra who kindles friendship, be present, O god, for the people born of the seers.

imaṃ vidhanto apāṃ sadhasthe dvitādadhurbhṛgavo vikṣvā3yoḥ eṣa viśvānyabhyastu bhūmā devānāmagniraratirjīrāśvaḥ
Placing this between the waters, the twofold Bhr̥gu saw the pair of rivers. This Agni became the all-encompassing abode for the gods; like the slow horses, he grew old in strength.

agniṃ devāso mānuṣīṣu vikṣu priyaṃ dhuḥ kṣeṣyanto na mitram sa dīdayaduśatīrūrmyā ā dakṣāyyo yo dāsvate dama ā
They beheld Agni among gods and men; loving he will not fail Mitra. He kindled the banks like a roaring wave; he who gives to the skillful to whom gifts were given.

asya raṇvā svasyeva puṣṭiḥ saṃdṛṣṭirasya hiyānasya dakṣoḥ vi yo bharibhradoṣadhīṣu jihvāmatyo na rathyo dodhavīti vārān
His own strength, his nourishment, his sight, his mind and skill are his. He who bears burdens not by fault, the tongue that transcends in sacred herbs—he does not rush like a chariot; the rivers stream.

ā yanme abhvaṃ vanadaḥ panantośigbhyo nāmimīta varṇam sa citreṇa cikite raṃsu bhāsā jujurvām̐ yo muhurā yuvā bhūt
From what sunlit forests the givers of wealth, the breathers, have brought this colour to me. With variegated remedy they have set it on the spoils; the shining man who repeatedly became young.

ā yo vanā tātṛṣāṇo na bhāti vārṇa pathā rathyeva svānīt kṛṣṇādhvā tapū raṇvaściketa dyauriva smayamāno nabhobhiḥ
He who in the forests like a thirsty one is not seen, the one who keeps the course of sails and chariots brought his own. With black path he, the ascetic, the vigorous one, like the sky smiling with the waters and heavens.

sa yo vyasthādabhi dakṣadurvīṃ paśurnaiti svayuragopāḥ agniḥ śociṣmām̐ atasānyuṣṇankṛṣṇavyathirasvadayanna bhūma
He who arranged carelessly and unskillfully does not drive away cattle; the herdsmen are not his own. Agni laments over the sacrifices; heated, blackened, pained, the earth suffers.

Now do you praise, Agni, the ancient abode of the earlier ones, the third, O honored one. Supply for us, Agni, the heroic, broad, enduring riches, the wealth, the sire’s realm.

tvayā yathā gṛtsamadāso agne guhā vanvanta uparām̐ abhi ṣyuḥ suvīrāso abhimātiṣāhaḥ smatsūribhyo gṛṇate tadvayo dhāḥ
As you placed the gathered offerings, Agni, in the hollow of the wood, they rose up like the brave with eager hearts; from the wise seers the sun spoke that to you are these hymns.
