स॒हस्र॑शीर्षा॒ पुरु॑षः सहस्रा॒क्षः स॒हस्र॑पात् । स भूमिं॑ वि॒श्वतो॑ वृ॒त्वात्य॑तिष्ठद्दशाङ्गु॒लम्
sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt sa bhūmiṃ viśvato vṛtvātyatiṣṭhaddaśāṅgulam
Thousand-headed is Purusha, thousand-eyed, thousand-footed. He pervades the earth on every side and exceeds it by ten fingers’ breadth.

पुरु॑ष ए॒वेदं सर्वं॒ यद्भू॒तं यच्च॒ भव्य॑म् । उ॒तामृ॑त॒त्वस्येशा॑नो॒ यदन्ने॑नाति॒रोह॑ति
puruṣa evedaṃ sarvaṃ yadbhūtaṃ yacca bhavyam utāmṛtatvasyeśāno yadannenātirohati
This Purusha is all that was and all that will be. He is the lord of immortal life; by food he transcends and grows beyond.

ए॒तावा॑नस्य महि॒मातो॒ ज्याया॑ँश्च॒ पूरु॑षः । पादो॑ऽस्य॒ विश्वा॑ भू॒तानि॑ त्रि॒पाद॑स्या॒मृतं॑ दि॒वि
etāvānasya mahimāto jyāyām̐śca pūruṣaḥ pādo'sya viśvā bhūtāni tripādasyāmṛtaṃ divi
From his great glory have these beings been born; the Purusha’s greater part is ten fingers long. His feet are all beings; from his navel arose the immortal in heaven.

त्रि॒पादू॒र्ध्व उदै॒त्पुरु॑षः॒ पादो॑ऽस्ये॒हाभ॑व॒त्पुनः॑ । ततो॒ विष्व॒ङ्व्य॑क्रामत्साशनानश॒ने अ॒भि
tripādūrdhva udaitpuruṣaḥ pādo'syehābhavatpunaḥ tato viṣvaṅvyakrāmatsāśanānaśane abhi
The Purusha rose up with three feet; one foot of him was here, and then again another. From that he strode forth, encompassing all, consuming the solid and the moving.

तस्मा॑द्वि॒राळ॑जायत वि॒राजो॒ अधि॒ पूरु॑षः । स जा॒तो अत्य॑रिच्यत प॒श्चाद्भूमि॒मथो॑ पु॒रः
tasmādvirāḷajāyata virājo adhi pūruṣaḥ sa jāto atyaricyata paścādbhūmimatho puraḥ
From him was born Viraja, the Purusha lying above; she was born and reclined behind — then the earth and what is before her were formed.

यत्पुरु॑षेण ह॒विषा॑ दे॒वा य॒ज्ञमत॑न्वत । व॒स॒न्तो अ॑स्यासी॒दाज्यं॑ ग्री॒ष्म इ॒ध्मः श॒रद्ध॒विः
yatpuruṣeṇa haviṣā devā yajñamatanvata vasanto asyāsīdājyaṃ grīṣma idhmaḥ śaraddhaviḥ
By the Purusha the gods, with offerings, followed the sacrifice; from him came spring (barley), summer (honey), autumn (fuel) and the oblation (the sacrificial priest).

तं य॒ज्ञं ब॒र्हिषि॒ प्रौक्ष॒न्पुरु॑षं जा॒तम॑ग्र॒तः । तेन॑ दे॒वा अ॑यजन्त सा॒ध्या ऋष॑यश्च॒ ये
taṃ yajñaṃ barhiṣi praukṣanpuruṣaṃ jātamagrataḥ tena devā ayajanta sādhyā ṛṣayaśca ye
They proclaimed that sacrifice with the priest in the Brahmanas: the gods offered him first; by that the gods and the sages who are the Saadhyas were invoked.

तस्मा॑द्य॒ज्ञात्स॑र्व॒हुतः॒ सम्भृ॑तं पृषदा॒ज्यम् । प॒शून्ताँश्च॑क्रे वाय॒व्या॑नार॒ण्यान्ग्रा॒म्याश्च॒ ये
tasmādyajñātsarvahutaḥ sambhṛtaṃ pṛṣadājyam paśūntām̐ścakre vāyavyānāraṇyāngrāmyāśca ye
Therefore from that sacrifice, wholly offered, were produced the cattle and the milking goats: the aerial, the forest, the pastoral and the village kinds were created.

तस्मा॑द्य॒ज्ञात्स॑र्व॒हुत॒ ऋचः॒ सामा॑नि जज्ञिरे । छन्दां॑सि जज्ञिरे॒ तस्मा॒द्यजु॒स्तस्मा॑दजायत
tasmādyajñātsarvahuta ṛcaḥ sāmāni jajñire chandāṃsi jajñire tasmādyajustasmādajāyata
Therefore from that sacrifice, wholly offered, were born the Rig and the Sam hymns. The metres were born; from that came the Yajus.

तस्मा॒दश्वा॑ अजायन्त॒ ये के चो॑भ॒याद॑तः । गावो॑ ह जज्ञिरे॒ तस्मा॒त्तस्मा॑ज्जा॒ता अ॑जा॒वयः॑
tasmādaśvā ajāyanta ye ke cobhayādataḥ gāvo ha jajñire tasmāttasmājjātā ajāvayaḥ
Therefore were born the horses, those that travel in both directions. Cows were praised; hence were born the goats and sheep.

yatpuruṣaṃ vyadadhuḥ katidhā vyakalpayan mukhaṃ kimasya kau bāhū kā ūrū pādā ucyete
How, in how many ways, did they divide the Purusha, marking him out? Which is called his mouth, which his two arms, what his two thighs, and what are called his feet?

ब्रा॒ह्म॒णो॑ऽस्य॒ मुख॑मासीद्बा॒हू रा॑ज॒न्यः॑ कृ॒तः । ऊ॒रू तद॑स्य॒ यद्वैश्यः॑ प॒द्भ्यां शू॒द्रो अ॑जायत
brāhmaṇo'sya mukhamāsīdbāhū rājanyaḥ kṛtaḥ ūrū tadasya yadvaiśyaḥ padbhyāṃ śūdro ajāyata
His mouth was the Brahmin, his arms the Kshatriya, his thighs were made the Vaishya; from his feet the Shudra was born.

candramā manaso jātaścakṣoḥ sūryo ajāyata mukhādindraścāgniśca prāṇādvāyurajāyata
The moon was born from the mind, the sun from the eye. From his mouth came Indra and Agni; from his breath the Vayu was born.

नाभ्या॑ आसीद॒न्तरि॑क्षं शी॒र्ष्णो द्यौः सम॑वर्तत । प॒द्भ्यां भूमि॒र्दिशः॒ श्रोत्रा॒त्तथा॑ लो॒काँ अ॑कल्पयन्
nābhyā āsīdantarikṣaṃ śīrṣṇo dyauḥ samavartata padbhyāṃ bhūmirdiśaḥ śrotrāttathā lokām̐ akalpayan
From his navel was the mid‑space; from his head the heaven revolved. From his feet the earth, directions and ears were fashioned, and thus he conceived the worlds.

स॒प्तास्या॑सन्परि॒धय॒स्त्रिः स॒प्त स॒मिधः॑ कृ॒ताः । दे॒वा यद्य॒ज्ञं त॑न्वा॒ना अब॑ध्न॒न्पुरु॑षं प॒शुम्
saptāsyāsanparidhayastriḥ sapta samidhaḥ kṛtāḥ devā yadyajñaṃ tanvānā abadhnanpuruṣaṃ paśum
Seven enclosing sheaths surround him; three times seven sacrificial sticks were made. When the gods bound the Purusha with those stretched sacrifices,

य॒ज्ञेन॑ य॒ज्ञम॑यजन्त दे॒वास्तानि॒ धर्मा॑णि प्रथ॒मान्या॑सन् । ते ह॒ नाकं॑ महि॒मानः॑ सचन्त॒ यत्र॒ पूर्वे॑ सा॒ध्याः सन्ति॑ दे॒वाः
yajñena yajñamayajanta devāstāni dharmāṇi prathamānyāsan te ha nākaṃ mahimānaḥ sacanta yatra pūrve sādhyāḥ santi devāḥ
By sacrifice the gods performed sacrifices, and those were first ordained as duties. They attained mighty fame that where formerly the Saadhyas (and) the gods existed.
