म॒हत्तदुल्बं॒ स्थवि॑रं॒ तदा॑सी॒द्येनावि॑ष्टितः प्रवि॒वेशि॑था॒पः । विश्वा॑ अपश्यद्बहु॒धा ते॑ अग्ने॒ जात॑वेदस्त॒न्वो॑ दे॒व एकः॑
mahattadulbaṃ sthaviraṃ tadāsīdyenāviṣṭitaḥ praviveśithāpaḥ viśvā apaśyadbahudhā te agne jātavedastanvo deva ekaḥ
Greatly alarmed, firm and fearful, when he was present and entered, Agni the all‑knowing shone forth. They all saw him diversely: Agni the born‑knower was one among the gods.

ko mā dadarśa katamaḥ sa devo yo me tanvo bahudhā paryapaśyat kvāha mitrāvaruṇā kṣiyantyagnerviśvāḥ samidho devayānīḥ
Who saw him? Which god is he who in many forms displayed himself to me? Where, Mitra‑Varuna, do the ashes of Agni perish? The sacred fuel, the divine carriers, the godly roads—where do they go?

ऐच्छा॑म त्वा बहु॒धा जा॑तवेदः॒ प्रवि॑ष्टमग्ने अ॒प्स्वोष॑धीषु । तं त्वा॑ य॒मो अ॑चिकेच्चित्रभानो दशान्तरु॒ष्याद॑ति॒रोच॑मानम्
aicchāma tvā bahudhā jātavedaḥ praviṣṭamagne apsvoṣadhīṣu taṃ tvā yamo acikeccitrabhāno daśāntaruṣyādatirocamānam
O born‑knower, I long for you who in many forms, Agni, entered among the waters and herbs. Yama sought you, shining like a wondrous light, to pass through the ten directions, bright and far‑moving.

हो॒त्राद॒हं व॑रुण॒ बिभ्य॑दायं॒ नेदे॒व मा॑ यु॒नज॒न्नत्र॑ दे॒वाः । तस्य॑ मे त॒न्वो॑ बहु॒धा निवि॑ष्टा ए॒तमर्थं॒ न चि॑केता॒हम॒ग्निः
hotrādahaṃ varuṇa bibhyadāyaṃ nedeva mā yunajannatra devāḥ tasya me tanvo bahudhā niviṣṭā etamarthaṃ na ciketāhamagniḥ
I, the Hotr (priest), feared Varuṇa and did not compel the gods to come here; Agni did not know this purpose of mine, though my body was placed in many ways for it.

एहि॒ मनु॑र्देव॒युर्य॒ज्ञका॑मोऽरं॒कृत्या॒ तम॑सि क्षेष्यग्ने । सु॒गान्प॒थः कृ॑णुहि देव॒याना॒न्वह॑ ह॒व्यानि॑ सुमन॒स्यमा॑नः
ehi manurdevayuryajñakāmo'raṃkṛtyā tamasi kṣeṣyagne sugānpathaḥ kṛṇuhi devayānānvaha havyāni sumanasyamānaḥ
Come, mortal, for the gods desire the sacrificial rite; Agni will cut away the darkness. Make the good path, lead the gods with offerings, O generous-minded one.

अ॒ग्नेः पूर्वे॒ भ्रात॑रो॒ अर्थ॑मे॒तं र॒थीवाध्वा॑न॒मन्वाव॑रीवुः । तस्मा॑द्भि॒या व॑रुण दू॒रमा॑यं गौ॒रो न क्षे॒प्नोर॑विजे॒ ज्यायाः॑
agneḥ pūrve bhrātaro arthametaṃ rathīvādhvānamanvāvarīvuḥ tasmādbhiyā varuṇa dūramāyaṃ gauro na kṣepnoravije jyāyāḥ
Agni's earlier brothers, for this purpose, yoked like charioteers drew onward together. Therefore Varuṇa, from those fears, may not cast away the far-extended bright one more than is fitting.

कु॒र्मस्त॒ आयु॑र॒जरं॒ यद॑ग्ने॒ यथा॑ यु॒क्तो जा॑तवेदो॒ न रिष्याः॑ । अथा॑ वहासि सुमन॒स्यमा॑नो भा॒गं दे॒वेभ्यो॑ ह॒विषः॑ सुजात
kurmasta āyurajaraṃ yadagne yathā yukto jātavedo na riṣyāḥ athā vahāsi sumanasyamāno bhāgaṃ devebhyo haviṣaḥ sujāta
Agni, like a tortoise in years, as Jātavedas united, you will not be harmed. Thus you carry, generous-minded one, the portion of the gods—well-born offerings.

प्र॒या॒जान्मे॑ अनुया॒जाँश्च॒ केव॑ला॒नूर्ज॑स्वन्तं ह॒विषो॑ दत्त भा॒गम् । घृ॒तं चा॒पां पुरु॑षं॒ चौष॑धीनाम॒ग्नेश्च॑ दी॒र्घमायु॑रस्तु देवाः
prayājānme anuyājām̐śca kevalānūrjasvantaṃ haviṣo datta bhāgam ghṛtaṃ cāpāṃ puruṣaṃ cauṣadhīnāmagneśca dīrghamāyurastu devāḥ
Grant my offerings along with oblations, alone bringing lively vigour; give the portion. Let the ghee and the sacrificial person and the fourfold herbs be for Agni—may the gods grant long life.

तव॑ प्रया॒जा अ॑नुया॒जाश्च॒ केव॑ल॒ ऊर्ज॑स्वन्तो ह॒विषः॑ सन्तु भा॒गाः । तवा॑ग्ने य॒ज्ञो॒३॒॑ऽयम॑स्तु॒ सर्व॒स्तुभ्यं॑ नमन्तां प्र॒दिश॒श्चत॑स्रः
tava prayājā anuyājāśca kevala ūrjasvanto haviṣaḥ santu bhāgāḥ tavāgne yajño3'yamastu sarvastubhyaṃ namantāṃ pradiśaścatasraḥ
May my oblations be lively, bearing those offerings and the sole vital force. May Agni's worship be this for you; may all bow to you. Four regions and four quarters may they turn toward you.
