pratyagniruṣasaścekitāno'bodhi vipraḥ padavīḥ kavīnām pṛthupājā devayadbhiḥ samiddho'pa dvārā tamaso vahnirāvaḥ
Agni turned toward the Rudras and the Maruts, awakening; the seer is the seat of poets. Born widely, honored by the gods, the fire bears away darkness with the sages’ rite.

predvagnirvāvṛdhe stomebhirgīrbhiḥ stotṝṇāṃ namasya ukthaiḥ pūrvīrṛtasya saṃdṛśaścakānaḥ saṃ dūto adyauduṣaso viroke
Swift Agni, may you be increased by hymns, by songs and praises of worshippers, by obeisances and sacred formulas. Resembling the primal law, like a messenger today you drive away the hostile one from the outfall.

adhāyyagnirmānuṣīṣu vikṣva1pāṃ garbho mitra ṛtena sādhan ā haryato yajataḥ sānvasthādabhūdu vipro havyo matīnām
Agni dwells among men, widespread; in the womb is the offspring made auspicious by Mitra’s ordinance. From the worshipper’s rite the priest became established—wise in counsel, the skilled sacrificer.

Rigveda · Chapter Mandala 3, Sukta 5 · Verse 3.5.4
mitro agnirbhavati yatsamiddho mitro hotā varuṇo jātavedāḥ mitro adhvaryuriṣiro damūnā mitraḥ sindhūnāmuta parvatānām
Mitra is Agni when he is propitious; Mitra the sacrificer, Varuna the all-knowing. Mitra is the path-opener, the hymn-master, the tamer of rivers, of oceans and of mountains.

pāti priyaṃ ripo agraṃ padaṃ veḥ pāti yahvaścaraṇaṃ sūryasya pāti nābhā saptaśīrṣāṇamagniḥ pāti devānāmupamādamṛṣvaḥ
He guards the beloved, the foremost of foes blocks the path; he guards the chant, the course of the sun. He guards the navel, the seven-headed, the fire guards the gods like the immortal cows.

Rigveda · Chapter Mandala 3, Sukta 5 · Verse 3.5.6
ṛbhuścakra īḍyaṃ cāru nāma viśvāni devo vayunāni vidvān sasasya carma ghṛtavatpadaṃ vestadidagnī rakṣatyaprayucchan
The Ārbhus fashioned the admirable, called Charu; all the gods, knowing, set them by the breath of Vayu. They spread the hide like ghee; thus the fire defends the feet of the hymns.

ā yonimagnirghṛtavantamasthātpṛthupragāṇamuśantamuśānaḥ dīdyānaḥ śucirṛṣvaḥ pāvakaḥ punaḥpunarmātarā navyasī kaḥ
Agni stood on the sacred seat, oily with clarified butter; the people entered, the strong ones pressed in. Glowing, pure, resplendent, the purifier again and again—who is like a mother renewed?

sadyo jāta oṣadhībhirvavakṣe yadī vardhanti prasvo ghṛtena āpa iva pravatā śumbhamānā uruṣyadagniḥ pitrorupasthe
I will proclaim herbs freshly born, if they increase by the abundant ghee. Like waters that overflow, the strong-fire, exulting, grows large—Agni stands in the form of the fathers.

udu ṣṭutaḥ samidhā yahvo adyaudvarṣmandivo adhi nābhā pṛthivyāḥ mitro agnirīḍyo mātariśvā dūto vakṣadyajathāya devān
From the east the fuel-song rose; O hymnist, today the rain of heaven is above the navel of earth. Mitra-Agni, bright ones, messengers of the Maruts, declare the gods’ oblations.

udastambhītsamidhā nākamṛṣvo3'gnirbhavannuttamo rocanānām yadī bhṛgubhyaḥ pari mātariśvā guhā santaṃ havyavāhaṃ samīdhe
The fire stood up with stemmed fuel, high and shining among the luminous ones. If from the Bhrigus about the motherly Marishvan a cave is full, I carry the oblation and press it together.

iḷāmagne purudaṃsaṃ saniṃ goḥ śaśvattamaṃ havamānāya sādha syānnaḥ sūnustanayo vijāvāgne sā te sumatirbhūtvasme
O Agni, be the herd of men, the nourisher of cattle and best of kine for the sacrificer’s sake. May your son be vigorous, O Agni, grant me good counsel and be my protector.
