O sacred, mindful one, grant me knowledge: pure and impure, grant good counsel, O Vasva. Give, O gods, as you were sacrificed; say, friend, to the friends the thoughtful will protect the worshipper, O Agni.

Which threefold gifts of the gods they offered by day and night — Varuna, Mitra, Agni — take that honeyed, powerful sacrifice; they arranged it not for the weak, the fettered, the rootless.

He shines forth, the protector most wide, the kindler, first set to be praised in sacrifice. With homages they adore the bull; the gods, urged, appointed him to be worshipped.

Above and below the channels flow; the upward ones bring purity; the tearful ones have been set in motion. From the sky's navel the kindler is born; we, the men of prayer, worship him with libations and praise in the ritual.

Seven priests, called by the mind, seeking the truth, go forth through all that is contrary to untruth. Born among the assemblies of kings and in contests they move: the ancient ones performed the sacrifice with offerings.

Bharati, with her bearers, rejoices; Ila delights among the gods and men — Agni. Sarasvati, with her flowing streams, the three‑voiced goddess, may these praises preserve her in the ritual.

Come, O Agni, with fuel and with Indra’s Maruts, as charioteers carrying the gods. May the bright dawn not cease; O Svaha, may the gods, like immortals, be gladdened.
