बृह॑स्पते प्रथ॒मं वा॒चो अग्रं॒ यत्प्रैर॑त नाम॒धेयं॒ दधा॑नाः । यदे॑षां॒ श्रेष्ठं॒ यद॑रि॒प्रमासी॑त्प्रे॒णा तदे॑षां॒ निहि॑तं॒ गुहा॒विः
bṛhaspate prathamaṃ vāco agraṃ yatprairata nāmadheyaṃ dadhānāḥ yadeṣāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ yadaripramāsītpreṇā tadeṣāṃ nihitaṃ guhāviḥ
Brihaspati, the first of speech, who set the leading word the seers gave; whatever of theirs was best, whatever did not shrink from the foes—there the hidden oblation was placed.

सक्तु॑मिव॒ तित॑उना पु॒नन्तो॒ यत्र॒ धीरा॒ मन॑सा॒ वाच॒मक्र॑त । अत्रा॒ सखा॑यः स॒ख्यानि॑ जानते भ॒द्रैषां॑ ल॒क्ष्मीर्निहि॒ताधि॑ वा॒चि
saktumiva titaunā punanto yatra dhīrā manasā vācamakrata atrā sakhāyaḥ sakhyāni jānate bhadraiṣāṃ lakṣmīrnihitādhi vāci
As if to be anointed, they purified where the wise made speech with steadfast mind. Friends know friendships; in their words is placed the auspicious fortune.

य॒ज्ञेन॑ वा॒चः प॑द॒वीय॑माय॒न्तामन्व॑विन्द॒न्नृषि॑षु॒ प्रवि॑ष्टाम् । तामा॒भृत्या॒ व्य॑दधुः पुरु॒त्रा तां स॒प्त रे॒भा अ॒भि सं न॑वन्ते
yajñena vācaḥ padavīyamāyantāmanvavindannṛṣiṣu praviṣṭām tāmābhṛtyā vyadadhuḥ purutrā tāṃ sapta rebhā abhi saṃ navante
By sacrifice the word came to honor; they entered the seers who sought it. The sons spread it by pair; sevenfold bonds they bound around and newly established.

उ॒त त्वः॒ पश्य॒न्न द॑दर्श॒ वाच॑मु॒त त्वः॑ शृ॒ण्वन्न शृ॑णोत्येनाम् । उ॒तो त्व॑स्मै त॒न्वं१॒॑ वि स॑स्रे जा॒येव॒ पत्य॑ उश॒ती सु॒वासाः॑
uta tvaḥ paśyanna dadarśa vācamuta tvaḥ śaṛṇvanna śaṛṇotyenām uto tvasmai tanvaṃ1 vi sasre jāyeva patya uśatī suvāsāḥ
You saw and beheld speech, and you heard; and to him you stretched, born with offspring, like a husband you perform radiant rites.

उ॒त त्वं॑ स॒ख्ये स्थि॒रपी॑तमाहु॒र्नैनं॑ हिन्व॒न्त्यपि॒ वाजि॑नेषु । अधे॑न्वा चरति मा॒ययै॒ष वाचं॑ शुश्रु॒वाँ अ॑फ॒लाम॑पु॒ष्पाम्
uta tvaṃ sakhye sthirapītamāhurnainaṃ hinvantyapi vājineṣu adhenvā carati māyayaiṣa vācaṃ śuśruvām̐ aphalāmapuṣpām
You, steadfast in friendship, said: they do not strike him among the possessors of wealth. He treads not under; this speech, heard, brings results—flowers of reward will bloom.

यस्ति॒त्याज॑ सचि॒विदं॒ सखा॑यं॒ न तस्य॑ वा॒च्यपि॑ भा॒गो अ॑स्ति । यदीं॑ शृ॒णोत्यल॑कं शृणोति न॒हि प्र॒वेद॑ सुकृ॒तस्य॒ पन्था॑म्
yastityāja sacividaṃ sakhāyaṃ na tasya vācyapi bhāgo asti yadīṃ śaṛṇotyalakaṃ śaṛṇoti nahi praveda sukṛtasya panthām
He who holds fast this true friend-knowledge has no share in empty speech. If one hears the shallow word, he does not attain the path of well-done deeds.

अ॒क्ष॒ण्वन्तः॒ कर्ण॑वन्तः॒ सखा॑यो मनोज॒वेष्वस॑मा बभूवुः । आ॒द॒घ्नास॑ उपक॒क्षास॑ उ त्वे ह्र॒दा इ॑व॒ स्नात्वा॑ उ त्वे ददृश्रे
akṣaṇvantaḥ karṇavantaḥ sakhāyo manojaveṣvasamā babhūvuḥ ādaghnāsa upakakṣāsa u tve hradā iva snātvā u tve dadṛśre
They gained eyes and ears, friendly in heart and equal in spirit. They struck, they sat near at the sides; you, like a heart washed, you beheld and gave sight.

हृ॒दा त॒ष्टेषु॒ मन॑सो ज॒वेषु॒ यद्ब्रा॑ह्म॒णाः सं॒यज॑न्ते॒ सखा॑यः । अत्राह॑ त्वं॒ वि ज॑हुर्वे॒द्याभि॒रोह॑ब्रह्माणो॒ वि च॑रन्त्यु त्वे
hṛdā taṣṭeṣu manaso javeṣu yadbrāhmaṇāḥ saṃyajante sakhāyaḥ atrāha tvaṃ vi jahurvedyābhirohabrahmāṇo vi carantyu tve
In hearts, in the seats of mind, in the swift breaths where the brahmanas perform their rites — companions, there indeed you have spoken among the knowers of the Veda; may the brahmanas walk about you.

इ॒मे ये नार्वाङ्न प॒रश्चर॑न्ति॒ न ब्रा॑ह्म॒णासो॒ न सु॒तेक॑रासः । त ए॒ते वाच॑मभि॒पद्य॑ पा॒पया॑ सि॒रीस्तन्त्रं॑ तन्वते॒ अप्र॑जज्ञयः
ime ye nārvāṅna paraścaranti na brāhmaṇāso na sutekarāsaḥ ta ete vācamabhipadya pāpayā sirīstantraṃ tanvate aprajajñayaḥ
Those who do not revere men nor make offerings are neither brahmanas nor sons of a householder. They have taken to speech that is sinful; they were born ignorant of right ordinance.

सर्वे॑ नन्दन्ति य॒शसाग॑तेन सभासा॒हेन॒ सख्या॒ सखा॑यः । कि॒ल्बि॒ष॒स्पृत्पि॑तु॒षणि॒र्ह्ये॑षा॒मरं॑ हि॒तो भव॑ति॒ वाजि॑नाय
sarve nandanti yaśasāgatena sabhāsāhena sakhyā sakhāyaḥ kilbiṣaspṛtpituṣaṇirhyeṣāmaraṃ hito bhavati vājināya
All rejoice at fame gained by an assembly’s help; comrades, a friend indeed. Even the blame‑smitten, the father‑loved, these very deeds bring gain; beneficial is this to the vigorous one who gives wealth.

ऋ॒चां त्वः॒ पोष॑मास्ते पुपु॒ष्वान्गा॑य॒त्रं त्वो॑ गायति॒ शक्व॑रीषु । ब्र॒ह्मा त्वो॒ वद॑ति जातवि॒द्यां य॒ज्ञस्य॒ मात्रां॒ वि मि॑मीत उ त्वः
ṛcāṃ tvaḥ poṣamāste pupuṣvāngāyatraṃ tvo gāyati śakvarīṣu brahmā tvo vadati jātavidyāṃ yajñasya mātrāṃ vi mimīta u tvaḥ
You nourish the hymn; among the blossoming Gayatri you sing. Brahma declares to you the knowledge of birth — you measured the share of the sacrifice and understood it.
