Who harnesses the chariot to you men shining like the sky, who adorns it for the Wise? At dawn the youthful steed rushes, the dwelling stirreth; the mind yoked subdues with calm thought.

Who, having harnessed the steed of the dwelling, called forth the faultless one? Who as warrior laid the godly wife low, not the man who makes wives for the householder?

Early-born ones, depart like old ones by the waterfall; go home, ye household gods invoked. Whose splendor shall it become? Whose, O princes, like royal sons, go to the assembly?

You, like stags, O wanderers, beasts of chase, are free from blame; we call forth the steers' remnant with offerings. You priests pour libations like dew for men, O rulers, bearing children for the people.

You are the praises around, O steeds-admirers; the rulers come, the milk-giver is questioned by men. I have been and will be; for the charioteer the powerful song was recited.

You are the excellent poets around the steeds; your chariot cannot be reproached nor perish. You, like a bee around horses, in the sweet season carry forth what the woman does not remove.

You, O horse-friends, take the armoured garment; you yoked the bit and raised the chariot. You moved around the friends, purified were your nights and you mounted with power.

You, O Ashvins, made the lean rich, you laid down the sleeping; you measured out what women distribute. You, like nurses, bore the breasts, drove forth for seven nights.

The youngest maid fell, the crier robed in fair attire bound with beautiful armor; the Sindhu rivers are to us like greeting—this day becomes for us that lordship.

Lives lament and are weakened at the doorway; long prosperity the man sends forth. To the fathers on the left this offering I present; may the lord beget offspring around.

We do not know that which you declared rarely, O youths, about where women are born. For the beloved of the goddess, the bull's seed we bring home—O Ashvins, you are hostile to that.

Either the leftward sun or the vigor of might clothed in strength, O Ashvins, set desires in hearts. There arose the cow-pair, O gracious lord, O Gopā, beloved of Aryaman, we overcome the hostile ones.

May the slow-moving man, hard to win, place wealth, companion in valour, and speak true. May he make the sacred ford well-crossed, breathe freely, remain firm as lord of the ritual, and may perverse thought be slain.

Where are they — which of you, O Ashvins, shall behold the tenfold might and delight the beneficent lord? Who of these went to the seer or to the sacrificer’s house?
