घ॒र्मा सम॑न्ता त्रि॒वृतं॒ व्या॑पतु॒स्तयो॒र्जुष्टिं॑ मात॒रिश्वा॑ जगाम । दि॒वस्पयो॒ दिधि॑षाणा अवेषन्वि॒दुर्दे॒वाः स॒हसा॑मानम॒र्कम्
gharmā samantā trivṛtaṃ vyāpatustayorjuṣṭiṃ mātariśvā jagāma divaspayo didhiṣāṇā aveṣanvidurdevāḥ sahasāmānamarkam
Heat spread all around, wrapped thrice about; the two mothers went to the lair. The gods, desirous of splendour, clothed themselves swiftly with the sun’s likeness.

ति॒स्रो दे॒ष्ट्राय॒ निरृ॑ती॒रुपा॑सते दीर्घ॒श्रुतो॒ वि हि जा॒नन्ति॒ वह्न॑यः । तासां॒ नि चि॑क्युः क॒वयो॑ नि॒दानं॒ परे॑षु॒ या गुह्ये॑षु व्र॒तेषु॑
tisro deṣṭrāya nirṛtīrupāsate dīrghaśruto vi hi jānanti vahnayaḥ tāsāṃ ni cikyuḥ kavayo nidānaṃ pareṣu yā guhyeṣu vrateṣu
Three followed the right path and worshipped misrule; long‑hearing, the fire‑worshippers know them. Poets probed their secret counsels, their hidden rites, and the ordinances beyond.

चतु॑ष्कपर्दा युव॒तिः सु॒पेशा॑ घृ॒तप्र॑तीका व॒युना॑नि वस्ते । तस्यां॑ सुप॒र्णा वृष॑णा॒ नि षे॑दतु॒र्यत्र॑ दे॒वा द॑धि॒रे भा॑ग॒धेय॑म्
catuṣkapardā yuvatiḥ supeśā ghṛtapratīkā vayunāni vaste tasyāṃ suparṇā vṛṣaṇā ni ṣedaturyatra devā dadhire bhāgadheyam
A four‑breasted maiden of fair breath, fragrant, like clarified butter in expectation—by the wind she wears garments. In her the feathered one may seat himself with bulls; there the gods bestowed the portion of the mighty.

एकः॑ सुप॒र्णः स स॑मु॒द्रमा वि॑वेश॒ स इ॒दं विश्वं॒ भुव॑नं॒ वि च॑ष्टे । तं पाके॑न॒ मन॑सापश्य॒मन्ति॑त॒स्तं मा॒ता रे॑ळ्हि॒ स उ॑ रेळ्हि मा॒तर॑म्
ekaḥ suparṇaḥ sa samudramā viveśa sa idaṃ viśvaṃ bhuvanaṃ vi caṣṭe taṃ pākena manasāpaśyamantitastaṃ mātā reḷhi sa u reḷhi mātaram
One feathered bird entered the ocean; he pervaded this world and the realms. With mind‑sight they observed him; be mother, be gentle—do not be harsh, O mother.

सु॒प॒र्णं विप्राः॑ क॒वयो॒ वचो॑भि॒रेकं॒ सन्तं॑ बहु॒धा क॑ल्पयन्ति । छन्दां॑सि च॒ दध॑तो अध्व॒रेषु॒ ग्रहा॒न्सोम॑स्य मिमते॒ द्वाद॑श
suparṇaṃ viprāḥ kavayo vacobhirekaṃ santaṃ bahudhā kalpayanti chandāṃsi ca dadhato adhvareṣu grahānsomasya mimate dvādaśa
Poets and wise men, the brahmins, speak of the feathered one in many ways as one and as many. They set metres and placed portions at the altar’s edges—twelve parts assigned to Soma’s worship.

ष॒ट्त्रिं॒शाँश्च॑ च॒तुरः॑ क॒ल्पय॑न्त॒श्छन्दां॑सि च॒ दध॑त आद्वाद॒शम् । य॒ज्ञं वि॒माय॑ क॒वयो॑ मनी॒ष ऋ॑क्सा॒माभ्यां॒ प्र रथं॑ वर्तयन्ति
ṣaṭtriṃśām̐śca caturaḥ kalpayantaśchandāṃsi ca dadhata ādvādaśam yajñaṃ vimāya kavayo manīṣa ṛksāmābhyāṃ pra rathaṃ vartayanti
Thirty‑six and four they ordained, and set metres—twelve again. The poets, with thought and song, arranged the sacrifice and yoked the chariot with chants of Rig and Sama.

चतु॑र्दशा॒न्ये म॑हि॒मानो॑ अस्य॒ तं धीरा॑ वा॒चा प्र ण॑यन्ति स॒प्त । आप्ना॑नं ती॒र्थं क इ॒ह प्र वो॑च॒द्येन॑ प॒था प्र॒पिब॑न्ते सु॒तस्य॑
caturdaśānye mahimāno asya taṃ dhīrā vācā pra ṇayanti sapta āpnānaṃ tīrthaṃ ka iha pra vocadyena pathā prapibante sutasya
Fourteen others, great in might, these seven praise him with steadfast speech. They attained waters, the sacred ford; along that way the son drinks for his good.

स॒ह॒स्र॒धा प॑ञ्चद॒शान्यु॒क्था याव॒द्द्यावा॑पृथि॒वी ताव॒दित्तत् । स॒ह॒स्र॒धा म॑हि॒मानः॑ स॒हस्रं॒ याव॒द्ब्रह्म॒ विष्ठि॑तं॒ ताव॑ती॒ वाक्
sahasradhā pañcadaśānyukthā yāvaddyāvāpṛthivī tāvadittat sahasradhā mahimānaḥ sahasraṃ yāvadbrahma viṣṭhitaṃ tāvatī vāk
A thousandfold greatness and fifteen‑fold presence—so far as heaven and earth extend, so is that. A thousandfold greatness of glory, a thousandfold the speech that fills Brahman’s seat.

कश्छन्द॑सां॒ योग॒मा वे॑द॒ धीरः॒ को धिष्ण्यां॒ प्रति॒ वाचं॑ पपाद । कमृ॒त्विजा॑मष्ट॒मं शूर॑माहु॒र्हरी॒ इन्द्र॑स्य॒ नि चि॑काय॒ कः स्वि॑त्
kaśchandasāṃ yogamā veda dhīraḥ ko dhiṣṇyāṃ prati vācaṃ papāda kamṛtvijāmaṣṭamaṃ śūramāhurharī indrasya ni cikāya kaḥ svit
Who among the metres' joiners is wise? Who approached speech and fell prostrate? They called the brave eighth of the priests—Indra’s healer who tended the rite.

भूम्या॒ अन्तं॒ पर्येके॑ चरन्ति॒ रथ॑स्य धू॒र्षु यु॒क्तासो॑ अस्थुः । श्रम॑स्य दा॒यं वि भ॑जन्त्येभ्यो य॒दा य॒मो भव॑ति ह॒र्म्ये हि॒तः
bhūmyā antaṃ paryeke caranti rathasya dhūrṣu yuktāso asthuḥ śramasya dāyaṃ vi bhajantyebhyo yadā yamo bhavati harmye hitaḥ
They move around the end of the earth in the chariot; bones were yoked as if joined. When toil’s due is shared among the people, Yama becomes helper and prospering is achieved.
