आ॒विर॑भू॒न्महि॒ माघो॑नमेषां॒ विश्वं॑ जी॒वं तम॑सो॒ निर॑मोचि । महि॒ ज्योतिः॑ पि॒तृभि॑र्द॒त्तमागा॑दु॒रुः पन्था॒ दक्षि॑णाया अदर्शि
āvirabhūnmahi māghonameṣāṃ viśvaṃ jīvaṃ tamaso niramoci mahi jyotiḥ pitṛbhirdattamāgāduruḥ panthā dakṣiṇāyā adarśi
From great darkness dawn arose for these people, freeing the world from gloom. Great light came to the fathers; the difficult path of the southern way was revealed.

उ॒च्चा दि॒वि दक्षि॑णावन्तो अस्थु॒र्ये अ॑श्व॒दाः स॒ह ते सूर्ये॑ण । हि॒र॒ण्य॒दा अ॑मृत॒त्वं भ॑जन्ते वासो॒दाः सो॑म॒ प्र ति॑रन्त॒ आयुः॑
uccā divi dakṣiṇāvanto asthurye aśvadāḥ saha te sūryeṇa hiraṇyadā amṛtatvaṃ bhajante vāsodāḥ soma pra tiranta āyuḥ
Those high in heaven who hold the south—steeds accompany them with the sun. The golden-giving ones share immortality; mist-like attendants pass over soma, prolonging life.

दैवी॑ पू॒र्तिर्दक्षि॑णा देवय॒ज्या न क॑वा॒रिभ्यो॑ न॒हि ते पृ॒णन्ति॑ । अथा॒ नरः॒ प्रय॑तदक्षिणासोऽवद्यभि॒या ब॒हवः॑ पृणन्ति
daivī pūrtirdakṣiṇā devayajyā na kavāribhyo nahi te pṛṇanti athā naraḥ prayatadakṣiṇāso'vadyabhiyā bahavaḥ pṛṇanti
Divine bounty, the southward gift, is for the godly rite; poets do not fill it from plants. Thus man offers the southward gift with effort—many fulfill by giving.

श॒तधा॑रं वा॒युम॒र्कं स्व॒र्विदं॑ नृ॒चक्ष॑स॒स्ते अ॒भि च॑क्षते ह॒विः । ये पृ॒णन्ति॒ प्र च॒ यच्छ॑न्ति संग॒मे ते दक्षि॑णां दुहते स॒प्तमा॑तरम्
śatadhāraṃ vāyumarkaṃ svarvidaṃ nṛcakṣasaste abhi cakṣate haviḥ ye pṛṇanti pra ca yacchanti saṃgame te dakṣiṇāṃ duhate saptamātaram
Bearing the hundred-rayed air and the sun, the knowing chiefs bestow the offering. Those who fill and then give, joining in the meeting, milk the south as the seventh mother.

दक्षि॑णावान्प्रथ॒मो हू॒त ए॑ति॒ दक्षि॑णावान्ग्राम॒णीरग्र॑मेति । तमे॒व म॑न्ये नृ॒पतिं॒ जना॑नां॒ यः प्र॑थ॒मो दक्षि॑णामावि॒वाय॑
dakṣiṇāvānprathamo hūta eti dakṣiṇāvāngrāmaṇīragrameti tameva manye nṛpatiṃ janānāṃ yaḥ prathamo dakṣiṇāmāvivāya
He who is first among givers is called Dakshinavān; the villages first in giving are called front-villages. I deem him king of peoples who first carried the south’s offering.

तमे॒व ऋषिं॒ तमु॑ ब्र॒ह्माण॑माहुर्यज्ञ॒न्यं॑ साम॒गामु॑क्थ॒शास॑म् । स शु॒क्रस्य॑ त॒न्वो॑ वेद ति॒स्रो यः प्र॑थ॒मो दक्षि॑णया र॒राध॑
tameva ṛṣiṃ tamu brahmāṇamāhuryajñanyaṃ sāmagāmukthaśāsam sa śukrasya tanvo veda tisro yaḥ prathamo dakṣiṇayā rarādha
They called that seer and priest Brahmān, master of the yajña, versed in Sama and freed from bonds. He knew the bright lineage of Sukra—three who first served the south with zeal.

दक्षि॒णाश्वं॒ दक्षि॑णा॒ गां द॑दाति॒ दक्षि॑णा च॒न्द्रमु॒त यद्धिर॑ण्यम् । दक्षि॒णान्नं॑ वनुते॒ यो न॑ आ॒त्मा दक्षि॑णां॒ वर्म॑ कृणुते विजा॒नन्
dakṣiṇāśvaṃ dakṣiṇā gāṃ dadāti dakṣiṇā candramuta yaddhiraṇyam dakṣiṇānnaṃ vanute yo na ātmā dakṣiṇāṃ varma kṛṇute vijānan
Dakṣiṇā gives a southern steed, and Dakṣiṇā gives the moon’s pasture as reward. He who does not make the south his own self, who knows it not, does not prosper among the southward.

न भो॒जा म॑म्रु॒र्न न्य॒र्थमी॑यु॒र्न रि॑ष्यन्ति॒ न व्य॑थन्ते ह भो॒जाः । इ॒दं यद्विश्वं॒ भुव॑नं॒ स्व॑श्चै॒तत्सर्वं॒ दक्षि॑णैभ्यो ददाति
na bhojā mamrurna nyarthamīyurna riṣyanti na vyathante ha bhojāḥ idaṃ yadviśvaṃ bhuvanaṃ svaścaitatsarvaṃ dakṣiṇaibhyo dadāti
They do not eat meagre food, nor do the poor perish, nor are the eaters distressed. For this world and all its beings he gives to the souths what is his own.

भो॒जा जि॑ग्युः सुर॒भिं योनि॒मग्रे॑ भो॒जा जि॑ग्युर्व॒ध्वं१॒॑ या सु॒वासाः॑ । भो॒जा जि॑ग्युरन्तः॒पेयं॒ सुरा॑या भो॒जा जि॑ग्यु॒र्ये अहू॑ताः प्र॒यन्ति॑
bhojā jigyuḥ surabhiṃ yonimagre bhojā jigyurvadhvaṃ1 yā suvāsāḥ bhojā jigyurantaḥpeyaṃ surāyā bhojā jigyurye ahūtāḥ prayanti
The Boja sought the fragrant womb foremost; the Boja sought slaughter; those who were well‑minded. The Boja sought within for this offering to the gods; the Boja sought who were invoked and they proceeded.

भो॒जायाश्वं॒ सं मृ॑जन्त्या॒शुं भो॒जाया॑स्ते क॒न्या॒३॒॑ शुम्भ॑माना । भो॒जस्ये॒दं पु॑ष्क॒रिणी॑व॒ वेश्म॒ परि॑ष्कृतं देवमा॒नेव॑ चि॒त्रम्
bhojāyāśvaṃ saṃ mṛjantyāśuṃ bhojāyāste kanyā3 śumbhamānā bhojasyedaṃ puṣkariṇīva veśma pariṣkṛtaṃ devamāneva citram
They yoked the Boja’s horses together on the plain; for the Boja those maidens, bearing Shumbha, were bound. This is Boja’s lotus‑like mansion, adorned around like a divine house and wondrously fashioned.

भो॒जमश्वाः॑ सुष्ठु॒वाहो॑ वहन्ति सु॒वृद्रथो॑ वर्तते॒ दक्षि॑णायाः । भो॒जं दे॑वासोऽवता॒ भरे॑षु भो॒जः शत्रू॑न्समनी॒केषु॒ जेता॑
bhojamaśvāḥ suṣṭhuvāho vahanti suvṛdratho vartate dakṣiṇāyāḥ bhojaṃ devāso'vatā bhareṣu bhojaḥ śatrūnsamanīkeṣu jetā
Boja’s horses loudly draw the well‑dressed chariot; the excellent chariot proceeds to the south. The gods bore Boja as he entered; Boja conquers near the foes—victorious.
