Those born as the mighty sons of Rudra, the seven swift, the glorious, the charming, the lovely—when the Maruts moved, they wailed; indeed the Maruts made loud lamentation, the heroes rejoiced in contests, becoming angry.

They caused the lofty fame to rise and placed great glory in heaven; the Rudras performed ever. Wreathing the sun they produced the senses; they bestowed splendour upon the bold ones, the mighty-hearted.

gomātaro yacchubhayante añjibhistanūṣu śubhrā dadhire virukmataḥ bādhante viśvamabhimātinamapa vartmānyeṣāmanu rīyate ghṛtam
Like cows bearing calves, they made beautiful those who are lovely in limbs; fair ones they placed, from noble origin. They restrained the whole hostile-minded hostions; the paths of these were attended by clarified butter.

vi ye bhrājante sumakhāsa ṛṣṭibhiḥ pracyāvayanto acyutā cidojasā manojuvo yanmaruto ratheṣvā vṛṣavrātāsaḥ pṛṣatīrayugdhvam
Those who shine, having pleasant faces, with straight shafts, made wide the spaces, unshaken in sacred might. The mind-born Maruts, yoked to chariots, like bulls in rapid course, rushed the plain with valor.

When they sounded in the chariots, the plains were yoked; the Maruts assailed the mountain peaks. Rivers and streams cut through the hides, and the lands split apart, pouring forth.

ā vo vahantu saptayo raghuṣyado raghupatvānaḥ pra jigāta bāhubhiḥ sīdatā barhiruru vaḥ sadaskṛtaṃ mādayadhvaṃ maruto madhvo andhasaḥ
May the seven, the swift descendants of Raghu, who are like Raghu's progeny, carry you off with their arms in triumph. May the bright ones, with sacred hair, seat you on the gleaming flank; Maruts, sweet and blind to noxiousness, be gracious.

te'vardhanta svatavaso mahitvanā nākaṃ tasthururu cakrire sadaḥ viṣṇuryaddhāvadvṛṣaṇaṃ madacyutaṃ vayo na sīdannadhi barhiṣi priye
They increased in their hymns with greatness; they stood firm like necks, and the feet they set unshaken. Vishnu, when he ran, struck down the bull and the unerring moved; may he not sit upon the beloved hymn-press.

Like heroes they rushed to battle; they went not to the hearing-places nor to assemblies. All the worlds fear them like Maruts, men resembling kings among men.

Tvashta fashioned the mighty, well-made thunderbolt, golden, having a thousand showers; Indra, the bearer of men’s waters, set it to strike Vritra and split the watery deep.

Upward indeed they roared with vigor, cleaving the mountain with sharp force. The Maruts, resounding, like youthful heroes, made the meads of Soma glad and stirred the battle-places.

They roared upward; by that were directions filled, quenching the thirst of the cattle-born Gotama. The shining-browed ones came and, making the brahmana’s desire flow, satisfied him with homesteads.

Which riches are your refuge, threefold, given in the tenth part to the servant—these Maruts bring to us; grant us that strength, O heroic one, and excellent bounty.
