New with a thousandfold song, the son whom we desire to lead by sacrifice goes forth. The trumpet-sounding, black-robed, resounding, the divine sacrificer sings; the priest sings the heavenly hymn.

He, whitened in limbs, placed in brightness, joyful in the many fires, the purifier who is cleansing, the strong purifier pursues the manly host; Agni, bearing many, leads them like a charger.

May those wide-bellied, shining ones, O Agni, the pure beams wander; the bright-eyed protectors, new of vigour, roam in the forests, marshalled, roaring.

From the tongue came the disastrous word; it spoiled cattle and chariot-war, destroying offspring. Like a hero’s spread, O Agni, you afflict the sinful, terrifying the wilds.

You, O Chitra, who fashion many forms and contemplate forms for me, most radiant star, most excellent of forms among the Vayodhāmas — the moons and the shining heroes call you “Chandra” with the light of youth.
