eṣa pra pūrvīrava tasya camriṣo'tyo na yoṣāmudayaṃsta bhurvaṇiḥ dakṣaṃ mahe pāyayate hiraṇyayaṃ rathamāvṛtyā hariyogamṛbhvasam

This is the ancient offering and its red dye, not the rising of youths but the fruitful earth. Daksha pours out golden splendour, the chariot enclosed, the remover of sins unites with holy practice.

taṃ gūrtayo nemanniṣaḥ parīṇasaḥ samudraṃ na saṃcaraṇe saniṣyavaḥ patiṃ dakṣasya vidathasya nū saho giriṃ na venā adhi roha tejasā

They bound him with cords, enclosed like bridles, restrained like beasts; they did not traverse the sea in motion. The lord of Daksha, skilled and famed, did not ascend the mountain by force of vigor.

He, the great one, struck by the thunderbolt, does not blaze forth like flaming fuel; by whom the magician of heat made the dry one moist, who adorned the cows with milk, who brings the booty.

devī yadi taviṣī tvāvṛdhotaya indraṃ siṣaktyuṣasaṃ na sūryaḥ yo dhṛṣṇunā śavasā bādhate tama iyarti reṇuṃ bṛhadarhariṣvaṇiḥ

O goddess, if you, like a life-giver, arouse Indra, not the sun that binds by thirst — he who, by harsh boldness, assails with slaughter, him Renu, the mighty, drives back with fierce rejoicing.

vi yattiro dharuṇamacyutaṃ rajo'tiṣṭhipo diva ātāsu barhaṇā svarmīḷhe yanmada indra harṣyāhanvṛtraṃ nirapāmaubjo arṇavam

He who bears up the earth, unmoved, established the atmosphere; in the days of heaven he stood firm. Indra, exulting, struck Vṛtra; the ocean’s waters embraced the foe and were driven away.

tvaṃ divo dharuṇaṃ dhiṣa ojasā pṛthivyā indra sadaneṣu māhinaḥ tvaṃ sutasya made ariṇā apo vi vṛtrasya samayā pāṣyārujaḥ

You sustain the vault of heaven, with thought and vigor, and sit in the seats of earth’s lords. You are the source of strength for the splendid, water-born, the time-bound foe of Vṛtra, the mountain-climber.
