You watch over and protect us; as a king worthy of worship in our rites, Agni, you appear like a wealth‑bestower. O firstborn, you secure the city and strive, O lord.

You whom peoples move toward, as herds move to warm pastures, you are the messenger of the gods among mortals, a great inward power, bright in splendour.

Mother does not nourish the child that does not grow by proper birth; like cattle driven from wealth you go forward seeking what is stolen, like a stray beast.

Fool, not unwise are we; O Agni, you desire greatness. He who lies down moves about with the tongue; the young woman, O lord of men, was taken.

From the cooing a new one is born in the camps; a young one stood in the forest, pale as smoke. The unbathed bull does not enter; the thoughtful man whom mortals cherish.

Cast off the body, O thief, may the forest-oxen, the rough ones, be driven away by tusked hosts. This new-minded thought of yours, Agni, harness and yoked to the chariot, do not brighten with impure colours.

Brahman Jātavedas and I bow to you; this song increases the true self. Protect for us, Agni, the children and offspring, protect our trunks so they may not be cut off.
