Since they are called manīṣi (wise), the former interpretation is acceptable. By tyāga (renunciation) is meant abandonment of the fruits of actions. In the context of sacrifices and the like, this means that those who renounce the fruits of actions are called tyāgīs. Therefore only this view should be adopted.

Since he is called a manīṣi (a wise person), the earlier position is also acceptable. Tyāga (renunciation) is understood as the abandonment of the fruit. In the context of sacrifices and the like it is the position that those who renounce the fruits of actions are renouncers. Thus this one position alone is to be taken.

In the same way: “certainly” and so forth. The distinctions of sacrifices were stated (e.g. dravya-yajñas). Among gifts, for example, there is the giving of fearlessness. This means that whatever of these various acts is to be performed as a sacrifice, and so on. Otherwise, whether a brahmachārī, householder, or vanaprastha—if one desires to attain moksha one should adopt the highest āśrama and so on—this would contradict Smṛti. For sacrifices of knowledge, gifts of learning, giving of fearlessness, brahmacharya and austerities are indeed those (means). Therefore, when a statement is otherwise interpreted, it should be adjusted according to the difference of adhikāra (qualification), since other interpretations would lack applicability.

The substratum is the body etc. The doer is Vishnu — he is declared the cause of all actions; the jiva's non-doership is also proven. The instruments are the sense-organs. Chestas (efforts) and kriyas (actions) — from manual and other actions arise sacrificial acts, etc. Even mental practices like dhyana are caused as manasic chesta. Earlier efforts too function as causes by virtue of their samskara. There is also the unseen (daiva). Thus the received teaching says: ‘The body, Brahman, the organs, and actions — and the unseen, the fifth cause of action.’

।।18.18।।एवं तर्हि न पुरुषमपेक्ष्य विधिः? अकर्तृत्वादित्यत आह -- ज्ञानमिति। त्रिविधा कर्मचोदना एतत् त्रिविधमपेक्ष्य कर्मविधिरिति त्रिविधेत्युच्यते। कारणानि सङ्क्षिप्याऽऽह -- करणमिति। कर्मसंग्रहः कर्मकारणसंग्रहः। अधिष्ठानादि कारण एवान्तर्भूतम्।तथा ह्यृग्वेदखिलेषु -- ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानिनं च ह्यपेक्ष्य विधिरुत्थितः। करणं चैव कर्ता च कर्मकारणसंग्रह इति। अकर्तृत्वेऽपि विधिद्वारेश्वरप्रसादादिच्छोत्पत्त्योक्तकारणैः कर्मद्वारा पुरुषार्थो भवतीति। ईश्वराधीनत्वेऽपि विधिद्वारा नियतस्तेनैव।यदि चेच्छादिर्जायते तर्हि कारितमेवेश्वरेण। फलं च नियतम्। वस्तुतोऽकर्तृत्वेऽपि आभिमानिकं कर्तृत्वं तस्यैव। स्वातन्त्र्यं च जडमपेक्ष्यैवेति न प्रवृत्तिविधिवैयर्थ्यम्। सर्वं चैतदनुभवोक्तप्रमाणसिद्धमिति न पृथक् प्रमाणमुच्यते।
Then is not a rule required independent of the person? Since non-doership (akartritva) is stated, it is said — ‘knowledge’. There are three kinds of exhortation to action; thus threefold is the rule directing action. The causes are concisely declared as ‘the cause’. A collection of causes of action and of agents. The substratum and other causes are included. Thus throughout the Rigveda: ‘Knowledge, the knowable, and the knower — a rule arises depending on these.’ Also: ‘Cause, agent, and the collection of causes of action.’ Even in non-doership, the fruit of action comes about through action by the Lord’s will and other cited causes. Under the Lord’s sovereignty also the rule is fixed by action. If desire etc. arise, then the action is caused by God; the result too is determined. In truth, even in non-doership there is an apparent doership due to ego. Independence is likewise attributed only with respect to inert matter — hence the apparent contradiction between rule and non-doership is resolved. All this is established by experience and valid proof; no separate proof is asserted.

One who points out another’s fault as long‑standing and inappropriate is called a ‘dirghasūtrī’ (one given to long fault‑finding). If the fault was committed by another and has endured for a long time, the person who indicates that fault is called dirghasūtrī. This is the meaning of the term.

'Brahma-bhūyāya kalpate' — it is understood as becoming (or being fit) for Brahman; 'Brahmaṇi bhāvo — Brahma-bhūyam' — the state or mood in relation to Brahman is Brahma-bhūya (fitness for Brahman); 'Brahmaṇi sthitiḥ — sarva-dā tmanaskateti arthah' — remaining always in Brahman, i.e., constantly contemplating Him, is the meaning.

Entirely free of fault, may the great Lord Vishnu take delight always in what I have composed on the Gita, even if only slightly. May he be pleased with my exposition, purified like a swan that cleansed the Gita in the breeze, and with the pair named Sankara—one divorced of passion, the other ruddy with vigor. The sun is obscured by the strokes of the maya-like moths; may devotion (bhakti) abide in that sovereign Lord of life, O ascetic ruler (Yatindra).
