इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे सगरोपाख्याने सगरप्रतिज्ञापालनं नामाष्टाचत्वारिंशत्तमो ऽध्यायः।। 48।। अथानुज्ञाय सगरो वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम। बलेन महता युक्तो विदर्भानभ्यवर्त्तत।।
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyamabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde sagaropākhyāne sagarapratijñāpālanaṃ nāmāṣṭācatvāriṃśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 48|| athānujñāya sagaro vasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam| balena mahatā yukto vidarbhānabhyavarttata||
Jaimini said: “Then taking permission of Vasiṣṭha, the excellent sage, Sagara accompanied by a great army, marched against the Vidarbhas.

tato vidarbharāṭ tasmai svasutāṃ prītipūrvakam| keśinyākhyāmanupamāmanurūpāṃ nyavedayat||
Jaimini said: Then with great pleasure the king of the Vidarbhas offered to him his daughter whose name was Keśinī. She was unparalleled in beauty etc., and therefore was suitable to him in every respect.

स तस्या राजशार्दूलो विधिवद्वह्निसाक्षिकम। शुभे मुहूर्ते केशिन्याः पार्णिं जग्राह भूमिपः।।
sa tasyā rājaśārdūlo vidhivadvahnisākṣikam| śubhe muhūrte keśinyāḥ pārṇiṃ jagrāha bhūmipaḥ||
Jaimini said: In an auspicious hour, that ruler of the earth, a tiger among kings duly took the hand of Keśinī, in marriage, with the fire god as witness.

sthitvā dināni katicidgṛhe tasyātisatkṛtaḥ| vidarbharājñā saṃmantrya tato gantuṃ prajakrame||
Jaimini said: Honoured extremely well by the king of Vidarbhas, he stayed in his palace for a few days and taking leave of him, he set off from that place.

अनुज्ञातस्ततस्तेन पारिबर्हैश्च सत्कृतः। निष्क्रम्य तत्पुराद्राजा शूरसेनानुपेयिवान।।
anujñātastatastena pāribarhaiśca satkṛtaḥ| niṣkramya tatpurādrājā śūrasenānupeyivān||
Jaimini said: (He set off from that place) on being permitted by him. Then he was welcomed by the Pāribarhas. Coming out of their city, the king approached the Śūrasenas.

संभावितस्ततश्चैव यादवैर्मातृसोदरैः। धनौघैस्तर्पितस्तैश्च मधुराया विनिर्ययौ।।
saṃbhāvitastataścaiva yādavairmātṛsodaraiḥ| dhanaughaistarpitastaiśca madhurāyā viniryayau||
Jaimini said: Then he was honoured by the Yādavas, his maternal uncles. After being propitiated by them with plenty of wealth, he started from Madhurā (Pkt. form of Mathurā).

evaṃ sa sagaro rājā vijitya vasudhāmimām| karaiśca sa nṛpānsarvāṃścakre saṃketagānapi||
Jaimini said: Thus by conquering the whole of the earth he made all the kings his vassals (literally, “moving at his hint”) paying revenues and tributes.

ततो ऽनुमान्य नृपतीन्निजराज्याय सानुगान। अनुजज्ञे नरपतिः समस्ताननुयायिनः।।
tato 'numānya nṛpatīnnijarājyāya sānugān| anujajñe narapatiḥ samastānanuyāyinaḥ||
Jaimini said: Thereafter, he permitted the kings to go back to their kingdoms along with their armies. The king then allowed his followers to return.

Jaimini said: Accompanied by a great army and his royal retinue and camp-followers, he reached his kingdom slowly without afflicting the realms in between.

saṃbhāvyamānaśca muhurupadābhiranekaśaḥ| nānājanapadaistūrmamayodhyāṃ samupāgamat||
Jaimini said: He was honoured by the people of the villages and outlying districts with many gifts and presents. Then, he quickly reached Ayodhyā.

Jaimini said: On coming to know about his arrival, the citizens became enthusiastic over the great festivities and therefore adorned the city.

Jaimini said: The entire city prepared itself for a great festival. The surface of the ground was sprinkled with water and swept clean. It had hundreds of pots filled with water (signifying auspiciousness). Hundreds of tall flagstaffs were raised. The city was decorated with banners and emblems, fumes of agallochum spread everywhere. The city became bright and resplendent with many flowers of different colours. It was embellished with gem-studded ornamental gateways, lofty town-gates, tall minarets and palaces. Its highways were beautified by means of showers of flowers and fried rice. Every house in the city was prepared for the great festivity. The city had rows of houses where all the deities presiding over the sites of buildings had been worshipped. It was rendered beautiful all round by the delighted citizens and villagers eager to see the king who had conquered all the quarters.

Jaimini said: Then the ministers, counsellors as well as the residents of the harem came there, surrounded by groups of courtezans and ladies of the city. All the citizens assembled there. The king met them and receive d honour, welcome and blessings from them. There were a lot of deafening cheers of ‘Victory’ reverberating in all the quarters. The sweet sounds of different kinds of musical instruments got mixed with them. The king loudly greeted them. Accompanied by those joyous people and delighting his subjects, he entered the excellent city.

दृष्टिपूतेन गन्धेन ब्राह्मणानां च वर्त्मना। जगाम मध्येनगरं गृहं श्रीमदलङ्कृतम।।
dṛṣṭipūtena gandhena brāhmaṇānāṃ ca vartmanā| jagāma madhyenagaraṃ gṛhaṃ śrīmadalaṅkṛtam||
Jaimini said: Through a path that was Dṛṣṭipūta (i.e. protected from impurity by sight by disallowing people of wicked vision and keeping it spotlessly clean), that was rendered fragrant through scents and that was traversed first by the Brāhmaṇas, he walked upto a magnificently decorated mansion in the middle of the city.

अवरुह्य ततो यानाद्भार्याभ्यां सहितो मुदा। प्रविवेश गृहं मातुर्हृष्टपुष्टजनायुतम।।
avaruhya tato yānādbhāryābhyāṃ sahito mudā| praviveśa gṛhaṃ māturhṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāyutam||
Jaimini said: Accompanied by both of his wives, he got down from the vehicle and joyously entered the house of his mother, where the people were delighted and well nourished.

पर्यङ्कस्थामुपागम्य मातरं विनयान्वितः। तत्पादौ संस्पृशन्मूर्ध्ना प्रणाममकरोत्तदा।।
paryaṅkasthāmupāgamya mātaraṃ vinayānvitaḥ| tatpādau saṃspṛśanmūrdhnā praṇāmamakarottadā||
Jaimini said: With humility, he approached his mother who was seated in a couch. Touching her feet with his head, he made obeisance to her.

साभिनन्द्य तमाशीर्भिर्हर्षगद्गदया गिरा। ससंभ्रमं समुत्थाय पर्यष्वजत चात्मजम।।
sābhinandya tamāśīrbhirharṣagadgadayā girā| sasaṃbhramaṃ samutthāya paryaṣvajata cātmajam||
Jaimini said: After congratulating him with blessings in words choked with delight, she got up with great excitement and embraced her son.

सहर्षं बहुधाशीर्भिरभ्यनन्ददुभे स्नुषे। स तां संभाव्य कथया तत्र स्थित्वा चिरादिव।।
saharṣaṃ bahudhāśīrbhirabhyanandadubhe snuṣe| sa tāṃ saṃbhāvya kathayā tatra sthitvā cirādiva||
Jaimini said: With great pleasure, she blessed and congratulated both the daughters-in-law. The king honoured her with many a narrative and stayed there for a long time.

Jaimini said: Then, after being permitted by her, he set out from her abode. Thereafter, accompanied by his followers, and fanned with white chowries, the glorious king slowly entered the assembly-hall like the king of the Suras. After entering the highly splendid assembly-hall resorted to by many kings, he bowed down to all elderly persons. He was blessed by them. Then the lord of men sat on a magnificent and splendid throne.

Jaimini said: Then, after being permitted by her, he set out from her abode. Thereafter, accompanied by his followers, and fanned with white chowries, the glorious king slowly entered the assembly-hall like the king of the Suras. After entering the highly splendid assembly-hall resorted to by many kings, he bowed down to all elderly persons. He was blessed by them. Then the lord of men sat on a magnificent and splendid throne.

Jaimini said: Then, after being permitted by her, he set out from her abode. Thereafter, accompanied by his followers, and fanned with white chowries, the glorious king slowly entered the assembly-hall like the king of the Suras. After entering the highly splendid assembly-hall resorted to by many kings, he bowed down to all elderly persons. He was blessed by them. Then the lord of men sat on a magnificent and splendid throne.
