यदि॑ वा॒हमनृ॑तदेव॒ आस॒ मोघं॑ वा दे॒वाँ अ॑प्यू॒हे अ॑ग्ने । किम॒स्मभ्यं॑ जातवेदो हृणीषे द्रोघ॒वाच॑स्ते निरृ॒थं स॑चन्ताम्
yadi vāhamanṛtadeva āsa moghaṃ vā devām̐ apyūhe agne kimasmabhyaṃ jātavedo hṛṇīṣe droghavācaste nirṛthaṃ sacantām
If, O Agni, the false god approached or the gods were vainly reached, why, Jātavedas, do you utter deceitful words against us? Let your utterance not be fruitless.
If I am one following false gods, if I approach the gods in vain, then Agni (punishes me). If (we be notsuch, then) why, Jātavedas, are you angry with us? Let the utterers of falsehood incur your chastisement.
As if I worshipped deities of falsehood, or thought vain thoughts about the Gods, O Agni. Why art thou angry with us, Jatavedas? Destruction fall on those who lie against thee!
