वैश्यानित्येव तानाहुः कीनाशान्वृत्तिसाधकान। सेवंतश्च द्रवंतश्च परिचर्यासु ये रताः।।
vaiśyānityeva tānāhuḥ kīnāśānvṛttisādhakān| sevaṃtaśca dravaṃtaśca paricaryāsu ye ratāḥ||
Sūta said: Some stood by in the activity of protecting others who were weak. They destroyed Kīṭas (worms). They were established on the earth. The people call them Vaiśyas and cultivators of soil. They were the achievers of livelihood. Those who were engaged in the service (of others), those who ran errands and served others, were devoid of brilliance and deficient in virility. (Since they were deficient they served others). He called them Śūdras. Lord Brahmā ordained and prescribed their respective duties and holy rites.
