Upaveda — Rigveda
Ayurveda
आयुर्वेदः — The science of life and longevity. The oldest holistic healing system in the world, covering prevention, treatment, and the art of living in harmony with nature.
- Ayurveda (आयुर्वेदः) means 'science of life' — Ayus (life) + Veda (knowledge). It is the Upaveda attached to the Rigveda and the world's oldest complete medical system.
- Its foundational principle is the Tridosha theory: every human body is governed by three biological energies — Vata (air/space), Pitta (fire/water), and Kapha (earth/water). Health is the balance of all three.
- The classical texts are the Brihat Trayi (Great Three): Charaka Samhita (internal medicine), Sushruta Samhita (surgery), and Ashtanga Hridayam by Vagbhata.
- Sushruta Samhita describes over 300 surgical procedures and 120 surgical instruments — making ancient India a pioneer in surgery, including rhinoplasty and cataract operations.
- Ayurveda is divided into eight branches (Ashtanga Ayurveda): internal medicine, surgery, ENT/ophthalmology, paediatrics, psychiatry, toxicology, rejuvenation, and reproductive medicine.
- Panchakarma — the five purification therapies (Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, Raktamokshana) — is Ayurveda's signature detoxification and rejuvenation protocol.
- Ayurveda treats the patient, not just the disease — each individual has a unique Prakriti (constitution) that determines the ideal diet, lifestyle, and treatment approach.
