Durga Saptashati (also called Chandi Path or Devi Mahatmyam) is a collection of 700 verses from the Markandeya Purana, narrating the glory and victories of Goddess Durga (Chandi) over demonic forces. Comprising 13 chapters, it describes three grand battles — the slaying of Madhu-Kaitabha, the defeat of Mahishasura, and the destruction of Shumbha-Nishumbha — revealing the supreme, all-pervading Shakti who sustains and liberates the universe. It is the central scripture of Shakta tradition, recited especially during Navratri.
दुर्गा सप्तशती (चण्डीपाठ या देवी माहात्म्य) मार्कण्डेय पुराण के ७०० श्लोकों का संकलन है जो देवी दुर्गा (चण्डी) की महिमा और राक्षसों पर विजय का वर्णन करता है। १३ अध्यायों में तीन महायुद्धों — मधु-कैटभ वध, महिषासुर वध और शुम्भ-निशुम्भ वध — का वर्णन है। यह शाक्त परम्परा का प्रमुख ग्रंथ है और नवरात्रि में विशेष रूप से पाठ किया जाता है।
ॐ नमश्चण्डिकायै ॥ मार्कण्डेय उवाच — सावर्णिः सूर्यतनयो यो मनुः कथ्यतेऽष्टमः । निशामय तदुत्पत्तिं विस्तराच्छ्रूयतां मम ॥
Translation
Om, salutation to Chandika. Markandeya said: He who is known as the eighth Manu, Savarni, son of the Sun — hear from me in full detail the story of his birth.
यया तत्स्तम्भितं विश्वं या देवी स्तूयते सुरैः । या श्रीः स्वयं सुकृतिनां भवनेष्वलक्ष्मीः पापात्मनाम् ॥
Translation
She by whom this universe is pervaded, she who is praised by the gods — she is Lakshmi herself in the homes of the virtuous and misfortune in the homes of the wicked.
त्वं वैष्णवी शक्तिरनन्तवीर्या विश्वस्य बीजं परमासि माया । सम्मोहितं देवि! समस्तमेतत् त्वं वै प्रसन्ना भुवि मुक्तिहेतुः ॥
Translation
You are the Vaishnavi Shakti of infinite power, the very seed (origin) of the universe, the Supreme Maya. O Devi, all this is deluded by Your power. When pleased, You are the cause of liberation in this world.
देवानां तनुजं तेजः सर्वेषां तदभून्महत् । एकीभूतं तु तन्नारी व्याप्तलोकत्रयं त्विषा ॥
Translation
The great energy born from the bodies of all the gods — combined into one — became the Goddess (Devi), whose radiance pervaded all three worlds.
देव्यास्तु तं जघानाशु सिंहनादेन दानवम् । तं च गदया जघान दंशं कोपातुरा ततः ॥ पातयामास महिषं पुनरेव महासुरम् ।
Translation
The Devi quickly struck the demon with her lion-roar, then struck him with her mace, filled with righteous fury — and felled the great demon Mahisha again.
नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै शिवायै सततं नमः । नमः प्रकृत्यै भद्रायै नियताः प्रणताः स्म ताम् ॥
Translation
Salutation to Devi, to the Great Goddess, to the auspicious Shiva — salutation always. Salutation to Prakriti (Primal Nature), to the benevolent Bhadra — we are ever bowed before her.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु विष्णुमायेति शब्दिता । नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥
Translation
That Goddess who dwells in all beings as Vishnu-Maya (cosmic illusion) — salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her — salutation again and again.

Translation
That Goddess who dwells in all beings as: Consciousness, Intellect, Sleep, Hunger, Power, Thirst, Patience, Species-nature, Modesty, Peace, Faith, Beauty, Lakshmi, Livelihood, Memory, Compassion, Contentment, Motherhood, Delusion — salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her — salutation again and again.
इन्द्रादयः सुरगणाः नमस्करोमो देव्यै । स्वभावरुचिरे देवि जलधाराभिरन्विता । त्वं स्वाहा त्वं स्वधा त्वं हि वषट्कारः स्वरात्मिका ॥
Translation
We gods, led by Indra, bow to the Devi. O Devi, naturally beautiful, accompanied by streams of water — You are Svaha (the call at offerings to gods), You are Svadha (the offering to ancestors), You are the Vashat-kara, the essence of all sacred syllables.
हुंकारेणैव तं भस्म सा चकारासुरं तदा । अथाजगाम कोपेन कालरात्रिरिव ज्वलत् ॥
Translation
With a mere HUM-sound, she reduced that demon (Dhumralochana) to ashes. Then the lion (her mount) advanced blazing with fury, like the Night of Doom itself.
ततो देव्या मुखाच्चण्डी क्रोधेनातीव दुर्दिने । निःश्वासात् समुत्पन्ना कालिका भयदायिनी ॥ खड्गपात्रगदाहस्ता नरमालाविभूषिता । द्वीपिचर्मपरीधाना शुष्कमांसातिभैरवा ॥
Translation
Then, from the fierce face of Chandi, filled with extreme wrath, emerged the terrifying Kalika — bearing sword, skull-cup and mace, adorned with a garland of human heads, clad in tiger-skin, fearful in form.
तस्याश्च बिन्दुपातेन जायन्ते भूरिसंख्यकाः । तन्मांसं सा ममर्दासौ मातुरङ्के च तस्थिवान् ॥ आरक्तकमुखी देवी प्रततौ ललजिह्विका । मुखे समस्तान् क्षिप्त्वा शोणितबिन्दून् पिबत्यमूनत् ॥
Translation
From each falling drop of Raktabija's blood, countless new demons were born. Then Kali, her face crimson, with lolling tongue, threw all the demons into her mouth and drank every drop of blood — ending the cycle of regeneration.
देवी शूलेन विव्याध तं शूलं समपोथयत् । खड्गेन ताडयाचैनं पतन्तमपि भूतले । ततोऽसौ निशुम्भोऽपतत् सहसा धरणीतले ॥
Translation
The Devi pierced him (Nishumbha) with her trident, shattered it, then struck him with her sword as he was falling — and Nishumbha crashed suddenly to the earth.
एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा । पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः ॥
Translation
"I alone exist in this world — who is a second, other than me? Look, O wicked one — these (Kali, Kaumari, etc.) are my own manifestations, entering back into me!"
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके । शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥
Translation
O Narayani — You are the auspiciousness of all auspicious things, the auspicious Shiva, the accomplisher of all goals, the refuge, the three-eyed Gauri — salutation to You.
विद्याः समस्तास्तव देवि भेदाः स्त्रियः समस्ताः सकला जगत्सु । त्वयैकया पूरितमम्बयैतत् का ते स्तुतिः स्तव्यपरा परोक्तिः ॥
Translation
O Devi, all forms of knowledge are manifestations of You; all the women in all the worlds are You. You alone have filled the entire universe. What praise can I offer to You — You who are beyond all praise?
नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै दुर्गायै सततं नमः । हेतवे सर्वभूतानां भक्त्या प्रणतिः स्म ताम् ॥ शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणे । सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥
Translation
Salutation always to Devi, the Great Goddess, Durga — the cause of all beings; we bow to her with devotion. O Narayani, ever devoted to protecting those who surrender, the poor and the afflicted — remover of all pain — salutation to You.
देव्युवाच — वरदाऽहं सुरश्रेष्ठ! वरं वृणुत माचिरम् । लोकानामुपकाराय मम अव्यवसाय वा ॥ इत्थं यदा यदा बाधा दानवोत्था भविष्यति । तदा तदावतीर्याहं करिष्यामि तदारिनाशनम् ॥
Translation
The Goddess said: "I am the granter of boons, O best of gods — ask without delay. And whenever distress arising from demons occurs in the worlds, I shall descend again and again and destroy those enemies."
प्रथमं शैलपुत्री च द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी । तृतीयं चन्द्रघण्टेति कूष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम् । पञ्चमं स्कन्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च । सप्तमं कालरात्रीति महागौरीति चाष्टमम् । नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥
Translation
The nine Durgas are: (1) Shailaputri, (2) Brahmacharini, (3) Chandraghanta, (4) Kushmanda, (5) Skandamata, (6) Katyayani, (7) Kalaratri, (8) Mahagauri, (9) Siddhidatri.
पठेत् सप्तशतीं देव्याः पापहानिस्तदा नृणाम् । सर्वमाप्नोति यत्किञ्चित् फलं पुण्येन सेव्यते ॥ देवी प्रसन्ना वरदा जायते च नराय सा । दुर्गा भवानी शर्वाणी शिवा ते नमो नमः ॥
Translation
One who recites the Saptashati of the Goddess — their sins are destroyed and they attain all merit. The pleased Devi becomes the granter of boons. Salutation again and again to Durga, Bhavani, Sharvani, Shiva.
दुर्गे स्मृता हरसि भीतिमशेषजन्तोः स्वस्थैः स्मृता मतिमतीव शुभां ददासि । दारिद्र्यदुःखभयहारिणि का त्वदन्या सर्वोपकारकरणाय सदार्द्रचित्ता ॥
Translation
O Durga — when remembered, You remove the fear of all creatures; when remembered by those at ease, You grant extremely auspicious wisdom. Who else but You — ever compassionate — is so devoted to the welfare of all, removing poverty, sorrow and fear?
जय त्वं देवि चामुण्डे जय भूतापहारिणि । जय सर्वगते देवि कालरात्रि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ मधुकैटभविध्वंसि विधाता वरदे नमः । रूपं देहि जयं देहि यशो देहि द्विषो जहि ॥
Translation
Victory to You, O Devi Chamunda! Victory, O remover of the afflictions of all beings! Victory, O all-pervading Devi — Kalaratri — salutation to You! Salutation to the destroyer of Madhu-Kaitabha, O boon-granting Creator! Grant me beauty, grant victory, grant glory — destroy my enemies!
विनियोगः — अस्य श्री चण्डीकवचस्य ब्रह्मा ऋषिः । नमस्ते शिवदे शान्ते शिवाराधितपादुके । शिवभक्तिप्रदे देवि महागौरि नमो नमः ॥ जातवेदसे सुनवाम सोममरातीयतो निदहाति वेदः । स नः पर्षदति दुर्गाणि विश्वा नावेव सिन्धुं दुरितात्यग्निः ॥
Translation
Salutation to You, O Mahagauri — granter of auspiciousness, peaceful, whose feet are worshipped by Shiva, granter of Shiva-devotion — salutation again and again. We press the Soma for Jataveda (Agni) who burns up all enemies. May he carry us across all difficulties — as a boat (carries one) across the ocean — and save us from all sin.
ॐ नमश्चण्डिकायै । मार्कण्डेय उवाच — विशुद्धज्ञानदेहाय त्रिवेदीदिव्यचक्षुषे । श्रेयः प्राप्तिनिमित्ताय नमः सोमार्धधारिणे ॥
Translation
Om, salutation to Chandika. Markandeya said: Salutation to the one whose very body is pure knowledge, who has the divine triple-Veda vision, who is the means of attaining the highest good (shreyah), who bears the half-moon (Shiva).
अपराधसहस्राणि क्रियन्तेऽहर्निशं मया । दासोऽयमिति मां मत्वा क्षमस्व परमेश्वरि ॥ आवाहनं न जानामि न जानामि विसर्जनम् । पूजाविधिं न जानामि क्षम्यतां परमेश्वरि ॥ मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं सुरेश्वरि । यत्पूजितं मया देवि परिपूर्णं तदस्तु मे ॥
Translation
Thousands of offenses are committed by me day and night — O Supreme Goddess, considering me as Your servant, please forgive me. I do not know how to invoke You, nor how to dismiss You, nor the proper method of worship — O Paramesvari, please forgive. O Suresvari, this worship that I have offered — deficient in mantras, in ritual actions, in devotion — may it be made complete (by Your grace).
