Ramayana

The Ramayana was originally composed by Maharshi Valmiki in Sanskrit — the first epic poem (Adi Kavya). It has been retold in many regional traditions, most notably by Goswami Tulsidas in the Ramcharitmanas (Awadhi). The epic depicts the life of Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, across 7 Kandas.

Epic·Itihasa / Smriti
  • The Ramayana is one of the two great Indian epics, composed by the sage Valmiki in Sanskrit.
  • It narrates the life of Rama — the ideal man, king, son, husband, and avatar of Vishnu.
  • The original Valmiki Ramayana contains 24,000 shlokas (verses) in 7 Kandas (books).
  • Tulsidas later composed the Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi (medieval Hindi) in the 16th century CE.
  • Both versions have profoundly shaped Hindu culture, art, music, dance, and philosophy.
  • Rama's journey represents the triumph of dharma over adharma — good over evil.
  • Sita represents ideal womanhood, Hanuman represents perfect devotion (bhakti), Lakshmana represents ideal brotherhood.
  • The Ramayana tradition includes hundreds of regional versions across South and Southeast Asia.
