भीष्मकः कुण्डिने राजा विदर्भविषये ऽभवत रुक्मी तस्याभवत पुत्रो रुक्मिणी च वराङ्गना ।।
bhīṣmakaḥ kuṇḍine rājā vidarbhaviṣaye 'bhavat rukmī tasyābhavat putro rukmiṇī ca varāṅganā ||
King Bhishmaka ruled in Kundin, in the region of Vidarbha; he had a son named Rukmi and a daughter named Rukmini, a beautiful maiden.

रुक्मिणीं चकमे कृष्णः सा च तं चारुहासिनी न ददौ याचते चैनां रुक्मी द्वेषेण चक्रिणे ।।
rukmiṇīṃ cakame kṛṣṇaḥ sā ca taṃ cāruhāsinī na dadau yācate caināṃ rukmī dveṣeṇa cakriṇe ||
Krishna desired Rukmini, who was charmingly smiling; he did not give her to Rukmi, who was asking for her out of hatred.

ददौ च शिशुपालाय जरासंधप्रचोदितः भीष्मको रुक्मिणा सार्धं रुक्मिणीम उरुविक्रमः ।।
dadau ca śiśupālāya jarāsaṃdhapracoditaḥ bhīṣmako rukmiṇā sārdhaṃ rukmiṇīm uruvikramaḥ ||
Under the influence of Jarasandha, Bhishmaka gave Rukmini to Shishupala, along with Rukmini, the great warrior.

विवाहार्थं ततः सर्वे जरासंधमुखा नृपाः भीष्मकस्य पुरीं जग्मुः शिशुपालप्रियैषिणः ।।
vivāhārthaṃ tataḥ sarve jarāsaṃdhamukhā nṛpāḥ bhīṣmakasya purīṃ jagmuḥ śiśupālapriyaiṣiṇaḥ ||
For the purpose of marriage, all the kings headed by Jarasandha went to Bhishmaka's city, desiring Shishupala.

कृष्णो ऽपि बलभद्राद्यैर यादवैर बहुभिर वृतः प्रययौ कुण्डिनं द्रष्टुं विवाहं चेदिभूभृतः ।।
kṛṣṇo 'pi balabhadrādyair yādavair bahubhir vṛtaḥ prayayau kuṇḍinaṃ draṣṭuṃ vivāhaṃ cedibhūbhṛtaḥ ||
Even Krishna, surrounded by many Yadavas like Balabhadra, went to Kundina to see the wedding of the earth-bearers.

श्वोभाविनि विवाहे तु तां कन्यां हृतवान हरिः विपक्षभारम आसज्य रामाद्येष्व अथ बन्धुषु ।।
śvobhāvini vivāhe tu tāṃ kanyāṃ hṛtavān hariḥ vipakṣabhāram āsajya rāmādyeṣv atha bandhuṣu ||
In the upcoming wedding, the Lord took away that maiden, placing the burden of opposition upon relatives like Rama.

ततश च पौण्ड्रकः श्रीमान दन्तवक्रो विदूरथः शिशुपालजरासंधशाल्वाद्याश च महीभृतः ।।
tataś ca pauṇḍrakaḥ śrīmān dantavakro vidūrathaḥ śiśupālajarāsaṃdhaśālvādyāś ca mahībhṛtaḥ ||
Then the illustrious Paundraka, the crooked Dantavakra, Viduratha, Shishupala, Jarasandha, Shalva, and others who bear the earth.

कुपितास ते हरिं हन्तुं चक्रुर उद्योगम उत्तमम निर्जिताश च समागम्य रामाद्यैर यदुपुंगवैः ।।
kupitās te hariṃ hantuṃ cakrur udyogam uttamam nirjitāś ca samāgamya rāmādyair yadupuṃgavaiḥ ||
Angry, they made excellent efforts to kill the Lord, gathering together with the Yadavas like Rama after being defeated.

कुण्डिनं न प्रवेक्ष्यामि अहत्वा युधि केशवम कृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां रुक्मी च हन्तुं कृष्णम अभिद्रुतः ।।
kuṇḍinaṃ na pravekṣyāmi ahatvā yudhi keśavam kṛtvā pratijñāṃ rukmī ca hantuṃ kṛṣṇam abhidrutaḥ ||
I will not enter Kundina without having killed Keshava in battle, having made a vow to kill Krishna, Rukmi rushed.

हत्वा बलं सनागाश्वं पत्तिस्यन्दनसंकुलम निर्जितः पातितश चोर्व्यां लीलयैव स चक्रिणा ।।
hatvā balaṃ sanāgāśvaṃ pattisyandanasaṃkulam nirjitaḥ pātitaś corvyāṃ līlayaiva sa cakriṇā ||
Having killed the powerful Sanāgāśva, surrounded by chariots, he was defeated and thrown down by the wheel of the divine play.

निर्जित्य रुक्मिणं सम्यग उपयेमे स रुक्मिणीम राक्षसेन विवाहेन संप्राप्तां मधुसूदनः ।।
nirjitya rukmiṇaṃ samyag upayeme sa rukmiṇīm rākṣasena vivāhena saṃprāptāṃ madhusūdanaḥ ||
Having defeated Rukmiṇa, he married her properly; Madhusūdana obtained her through a marriage with a demon.

तस्यां जज्ञे ऽथ प्रद्युम्नो मदनांशः स वीर्यवान जहार शम्बरो यं वै यो जघान च शम्बरम ।।
tasyāṃ jajñe 'tha pradyumno madanāṃśaḥ sa vīryavān jahāra śambaro yaṃ vai yo jaghāna ca śambaram ||
In her, Pradyumna, the powerful son of Cupid, was born; he defeated Shambara, who had killed Shambara.
