Brahmā said: O sages, O devas, listen. Now I shall explain a mode of worship than which there is no better one and which is conducive to the achievement of all happiness and cherished desires.

ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते चोत्थाय संस्मरेत्सांबकं शिवम् ॥ कुर्यात्तत्प्रार्थनां भक्त्या सांजलिर्नतमस्तकः ॥ २ ॥
brAhme muhUrte cotthAya saMsmaretsAMbakaM zivam ॥ kuryAttatprArthanAM bhaktyA sAMjalirnatamastakaH ॥ 2 ॥
Getting up in the Brāhma Muhūrta within an hour before dawn one shall remember Śiva accompanied by his consort. With palms joined in great devotion and head bent down he shall offer prayers.

uttiSThottiSTha deveza uttiSTha hRdayezaya ॥ uttiSTha tvamumAsvAminbrahmANDe maMgalaM kuru ॥ 3 ॥
O lord of devas, get up, get up. O lord stationed in the heart, get up. O lord of Umā, get up. Confer your auspicious blessings on the entire universe.

जानामि धर्मं न च मे प्रवृत्तिर्जानाम्यधर्मं न च मे निवृत्तिः ॥ त्वया महादेव हृदिस्थितेन यथा नियुक्तोऽस्मि तथा करोमि ॥ ४ ॥
jAnAmi dharmaM na ca me pravRttirjAnAmyadharmaM na ca me nivRttiH ॥ tvayA mahAdeva hRdisthitena yathA niyukto'smi tathA karomi ॥ 4 ॥
I know what is virtuous, but I am not inclined to work it up. I know what is unrighteous but I am unable to desist from it. O Mahādeva, I do everything as prompted by you, stationed in my heart.

ityuktvA vacanaM bhaktyA smRtvA ca gurupAdake ॥ bahirgaccheddakSiNAzAM tyAgArthaM malamUtrayoH ॥ 5 ॥
After repeating these words of prayer and remembering the sandals of the preceptor he shall go out to the southern direction for answering the calls of nature.

dehazuddhiM tataH kRtvA sa mRjjalavizodhanaiH ॥ hastau pAdau ca prakSAlya daMtadhAvanamAcaret ॥ 6 ॥
Cleaning the body thereafter with earth and water and washing his hands and feet he shall clean the teeth.

divAnAthe tvanudite kRtvA vai daMtadhAvanam॥ mukhaM SoDazavAraM tu prakSAlyAMjalibhistathA ॥ 7 ॥
Cleaning of the teeth shall be completed before sunrise. He shall gargle sixteen times with so many mouthfuls of water.

SaSThyAdyamAzca tithayo navamyarkadine tathA ॥ varjyAssurarSayo yatnAdbhaktena radadhAvane ॥8॥
O celestial sages, the Tithis of Ṣaṣṭhī, navamī as well as new moon days and sundays are forbidden for cleaning the teeth with tooth brush twigs.

यथावकाशं सुस्नायान्नद्यादिष्वथवा गृहे ॥ देशकालाविरुद्धं च स्नानं कार्यं नरेण च ॥९॥
yathAvakAzaM susnAyAnnadyAdiSvathavA gRhe ॥ dezakAlAviruddhaM ca snAnaM kAryaM nareNa ca ॥9॥
Bath shall be taken at a convenient time in rivers or in the house itself. No man shall take bath against the conventions of locality or the convenience of the season.

रवेर्दिने तथा श्राद्धे संक्रान्तौ ग्रहणे तथा ॥ महादाने तथा तीर्थे ह्युपवासदिने तथा॥2-1-13-१०॥
raverdine tathA zrAddhe saMkrAntau grahaNe tathA ॥ mahAdAne tathA tIrthe hyupavAsadine tathA॥2-1-13-10॥
Hot water bath shall be avoided on sundays, Śrāddha days, Saṅkrānti days, at the times of eclipse, on days of Great Charity and fast, in holy centres and during the days of impurity due to death or birth in the family.

अशौचेप्यथवा प्राप्ते न स्नायादुष्णवारिणा ॥ यथा साभिमुखंस्नायात्तीर्थादौ भक्तिमान्नरः ॥ ११ ॥
azaucepyathavA prApte na snAyAduSNavAriNA ॥ yathA sAbhimukhaMsnAyAttIrthAdau bhaktimAnnaraH ॥ 11 ॥
Even if one is in a state of impurity, one should not bathe in hot water. Instead, a devoted person should bathe mindfully, with reverence, especially at holy places or sacred waters.

तैलाभ्यंगं च कुर्वीत वारान्दृष्ट्वा क्रमेण च ॥ नित्यमभ्यंगके चैव वासितं वा न दूषितम्॥१२॥
tailAbhyaMgaM ca kurvIta vArAndRSTvA krameNa ca ॥ nityamabhyaMgake caiva vAsitaM vA na dUSitam॥12॥
Oil bath shall be taken on particular days of the week according to convention in the society. If one is accustomed to take oil bath everyday or if one is using scented oil breaking the convention, it is not faulty.

श्राद्धे च ग्रहणे चैवोपवासे प्रतिपद्दिने ॥ अथवा सार्षपं तैलं न दुष्येद्ग्रहणं विना ॥१३॥
zrAddhe ca grahaNe caivopavAse pratipaddine ॥ athavA sArSapaM tailaM na duSyedgrahaNaM vinA ॥13॥
Otherwise one should avoid Śrāddha days, days of eclipse, fast days and the first day of the lunar fortnight for oil baths. Except on the days of eclipse mustard oil can be used on other days.

देशं कालं विचार्यैवं स्नानं कुर्याद्यथा विधि ॥ उत्तराभिमुखश्चैव प्राङ्मुखोप्यथवा पुनः॥ १४ ॥
dezaM kAlaM vicAryaivaM snAnaM kuryAdyathA vidhi ॥ uttarAbhimukhazcaiva prAGmukhopyathavA punaH॥ 14 ॥
Bath shall be taken after due consideration of the place and season duly. He shall face either the north or the east when taking bath.

उच्छिष्टेनैव वस्त्रेण न स्नायात्स कदाचन ॥ शुद्धवस्त्रेण संस्नायात्तद्देवस्मरपूर्वकम् ॥ १५ ॥
ucchiSTenaiva vastreNa na snAyAtsa kadAcana ॥ zuddhavastreNa saMsnAyAttaddevasmarapUrvakam ॥ 15 ॥
He shall never take bath wearing another man's clothes. He shall take bath in pure clothes and shall think on his favourite deities.

परधार्य्यं च नोच्छिष्टं रात्रौ च विधृतं च यत् ॥ तेन स्नानं तथा कार्यं क्षालितं च परित्यजेत् ॥ १६ ॥
paradhAryyaM ca nocchiSTaM rAtrau ca vidhRtaM ca yat ॥ tena snAnaM tathA kAryaM kSAlitaM ca parityajet ॥ 16 ॥
If he wears during the night another man’s clothes, the same are not impure, hence there is no harm in taking bath with those clothes on but after taking bath they must be washed and returned.

तर्पणं च ततः कार्यं देवर्षिपितृतृप्तिदम् ॥ धौतवस्त्रं ततो धार्यं पुनराचमनं चरेत् ॥१७॥
tarpaNaM ca tataH kAryaM devarSipitRtRptidam ॥ dhautavastraM tato dhAryaM punarAcamanaM caret ॥17॥
After bath he shall perform water libation propitiating gods, sages and the manes. Thereafter washed and dried clothes shall be worn and Ācamana performed again.

शुचौ देशे ततो गत्वा गोमयाद्युपमार्जिते ॥ आसनं च शुभं तत्र रचनीयं द्विजोत्तमाः ॥ १८ ॥
zucau deze tato gatvA gomayAdyupamArjite ॥ AsanaM ca zubhaM tatra racanIyaM dvijottamAH ॥ 18 ॥
In a clean place washed and smeared with cow-dung, the devotee shall take his seat, O Brahmins.

शुद्धकाष्ठसमुत्पन्नं पूर्णं स्तरितमेव वा ॥ चित्रासनं तथा कुर्यात्सर्वकामफलप्र दम् ॥१९॥
zuddhakASThasamutpannaM pUrNaM staritameva vA ॥ citrAsanaM tathA kuryAtsarvakAmaphalapra dam ॥19॥
The seat shall be made of wood or a cloth-cover. A seat of diverse colours is conducive to the achievement of all desires.

यथायोग्यं पुनर्ग्राह्यं मृगचर्मादिकं च यत् ॥ तत्रोपविश्य कुर्वीत त्रिपुंड्रं भस्मना सुधीः ॥2-1-13-२०॥
yathAyogyaM punargrAhyaM mRgacarmAdikaM ca yat ॥ tatropavizya kurvIta tripuMDraM bhasmanA sudhIH ॥2-1-13-20॥
Or he can have the hide of a deer for a seat. He shall sit on it and apply Tripuṇḍra with the ashes.

जपस्तपस्तथा दानं त्रिपुण्ड्रात्सफलं भवेत् ॥ अभावे भस्मनस्तत्र जलस्यादि प्रकीर्तितम् ॥२१॥
japastapastathA dAnaM tripuNDrAtsaphalaM bhavet ॥ abhAve bhasmanastatra jalasyAdi prakIrtitam ॥21॥
Prayers, penance and charity shall be performed with due markings of Tripuṇḍra on the forehead for sure results. If ashes are not available marking may be done with holy water.

एवं कृत्वा त्रिपुंड्रं च रुद्राक्षान्धारयेन्नरः ॥ संपाद्य च स्वकं कर्म पुनराराधयेच्छिवम् ॥ २२ ॥
evaM kRtvA tripuMDraM ca rudrAkSAndhArayennaraH ॥ saMpAdya ca svakaM karma punarArAdhayecchivam ॥ 22 ॥
After marking Tripuṇḍra, on the forehead, the devotee shall wear Rudrākṣas. After daily rites are over, he shall begin the worship of Śiva.

पुनराचमनं कृत्वा त्रिवारं मंत्रपूर्वकम् ॥ एकं वाथ प्रकुर्याच्च गंगाबिन्दुरिति ब्रुवन्॥२३॥
punarAcamanaM kRtvA trivAraM maMtrapUrvakam ॥ ekaM vAtha prakuryAcca gaMgAbinduriti bruvan॥23॥
Then he shall perform Ācamana, the sipping of water thrice with the requisite mantras or once, saying that it is a drop of Gaṅgā water.

अन्नोदकं तथा तत्र शिवपूजार्थमाहरेत् ॥ अन्यद्वस्तु च यत्किंचिद्यथाशक्ति समीपगम् ॥२४॥
annodakaM tathA tatra zivapUjArthamAharet ॥ anyadvastu ca yatkiMcidyathAzakti samIpagam ॥24॥
Rice cooked with water shall be brought for the worship of Śiva. Whatever other things he can bring shall also be brought and kept near.

कृत्वा स्थेयं च तत्रैव धैर्यमास्थाय वै पुनः ॥ अर्घं पात्रं तथा चैकं जलगंधाक्षतैर्युतम् ॥ २५ ॥
kRtvA stheyaM ca tatraiva dhairyamAsthAya vai punaH ॥ arghaM pAtraM tathA caikaM jalagaMdhAkSatairyutam ॥ 25 ॥
A vessel for Arghya with water and scented raw rice grains shall also be brought.

दक्षिणांसे तथा स्थाप्यमुपचारस्य क्लृप्तये ॥ गुरोश्च स्मरणं कृत्वा तदनुज्ञामवाप्य च ॥ २६ ॥
dakSiNAMse tathA sthApyamupacArasya klRptaye ॥ gurozca smaraNaM kRtvA tadanujJAmavApya ca ॥ 26 ॥
To complete the formalities of worship, the vessel shall be placed on the right shoulder. He shall think upon the preceptor and ritualistically take his permission for the worship.

संकल्पं विधिवत्कृत्वा कामनां च नियुज्य वै ॥ पूजयेत्परया भक्त्या शिवं सपरिवारकम् ॥२७॥
saMkalpaM vidhivatkRtvA kAmanAM ca niyujya vai ॥ pUjayetparayA bhaktyA zivaM saparivArakam ॥27॥
He shall perform the rite of Saṃkalpa (including the requisite mantras and statements about the pūjā, the day, month, year etc. and the purpose of the Pūjā) and aver his desire. He shall perform the worship of Śiva with His attendants devoutly.

मुद्रामेकां प्रदर्श्यैव पूजयेद्विघ्नहारकम्॥ सिंदुरादिपदार्थैश्च सिद्धिबुद्धिसमन्वितम् ॥२८॥
mudrAmekAM pradarzyaiva pUjayedvighnahArakam॥ siMdurAdipadArthaizca siddhibuddhisamanvitam ॥28॥
Showing the mystic mudrā and using saffron and other materials he shall bow to and worship Gaṇeśa who confers benefits a hundred thousand times and is accompanied by his consorts Siddhi and Buddhi.

लक्षलाभयुतं तत्र पूजयित्वा नमेत्पुनः॥ चतुर्थ्यंतैर्नामपदैर्नमोन्तैः प्रणवादिभिः ॥२९॥
lakSalAbhayutaM tatra pUjayitvA nametpunaH॥ caturthyaMtairnAmapadairnamontaiH praNavAdibhiH ॥29॥
He shall repeat his names ending in the dative case appended with Namaḥ and prefixed with Praṇava.

क्षमाप्यैनं तदा देवं भ्रात्रा चैव समन्वितम् ॥ पूजयेत्परया भक्त्या नमस्कुर्यात्पुनः पुनः ॥ 2-1-13-३० ॥
kSamApyainaM tadA devaM bhrAtrA caiva samanvitam ॥ pUjayetparayA bhaktyA namaskuryAtpunaH punaH ॥ 2-1-13-30 ॥
After craving for forgiveness of the deity, he shall be worshipped again in the company of his brother Kārtikeya with great devotion and shall be bowed to again and again.

द्वारपालं सदा द्वारि तिष्ठंतं च महोदरम् ॥ पूजयित्वा ततः पश्चात्पूजयेद्गिरिजां सतीम् ॥३१॥
dvArapAlaM sadA dvAri tiSThaMtaM ca mahodaram ॥ pUjayitvA tataH pazcAtpUjayedgirijAM satIm ॥31॥
The big-bellied Gaṇeśa, the gate-keeper of the lord, shall be worshipped. Goddess Satī, Girijā shall be worshipped then.

चंदनैः कुंकुमैश्चैव धूपैर्दीपैरनेकशः ॥ नैवेद्यैर्विविधैश्चैव पूजयित्वा ततश्शिवम्॥३२॥
caMdanaiH kuMkumaizcaiva dhUpairdIpairanekazaH ॥ naivedyairvividhaizcaiva pUjayitvA tatazzivam॥32॥
With sandalwood paste, kumkuma, incense, and many lamps, and with a variety of food offerings (naivedya), one should worship Lord Shiva thoroughly.

नमस्कृत्य पुनस्तत्र गच्छेच्च शिवसन्निधौ॥ यदि गेहे पार्थिवीं वा हैमीं वा राजतीं तथा ॥ ३३ ॥
namaskRtya punastatra gacchecca zivasannidhau॥ yadi gehe pArthivIM vA haimIM vA rAjatIM tathA ॥ 33 ॥
Having offered salutations once more, one should return again into the presence of Lord Shiva — whether He is established in one's home as an image made of clay, gold, or silver.

धातुजन्यां तथैवान्यां पारदां वा प्रकल्पयेत् ॥ नमस्कृत्य पुनस्तां च पूजयेद्भक्तितत्परः ॥३४॥
dhAtujanyAM tathaivAnyAM pAradAM vA prakalpayet ॥ namaskRtya punastAM ca pUjayedbhaktitatparaH ॥34॥
One may consecrate an image of Shiva made from metal, other materials, or even sacred mercury (pārada). Having bowed down to it, one should again and again worship it, being fully absorbed in devotion.

तस्यां तु पूजितायां वै सर्वे स्युः पूजितास्तदा ॥ स्थापयेच्च मृदा लिंगं विधाय विधिपूर्वकम् ॥३५॥
tasyAM tu pUjitAyAM vai sarve syuH pUjitAstadA ॥ sthApayecca mRdA liMgaM vidhAya vidhipUrvakam ॥35॥
When that (form of Shiva) is worshipped, then all the gods are worshipped as well. One should establish a Shiva Linga made of clay, following the proper rituals and procedures.

कर्तव्यं सर्वथा तत्र नियमास्स्वगृहे स्थितैः ॥ प्राणप्रतिष्ठां कुर्वीत भूतशुद्धिं विधाय च ॥३६॥
kartavyaM sarvathA tatra niyamAssvagRhe sthitaiH ॥ prANapratiSThAM kurvIta bhUtazuddhiM vidhAya ca ॥36॥
The householders shall perform every rite according to prescribed rules. After performing the purificatory rite of the Bhūtas, the installation of the idol shall be performed.

दिक्पालान्पूजयेत्तत्र स्थापयित्वा शिवालये ॥ गृहे शिवस्सदा पूज्यो मूलमंत्राभियोगतः ॥३७॥
dikpAlAnpUjayettatra sthApayitvA zivAlaye ॥ gRhe zivassadA pUjyo mUlamaMtrAbhiyogataH ॥37॥
If the worship is performed in the temple of Śiva, the guardians of the quarters shall be installed and worshipped. In the house, Śiva shall be worshipped by the root mantra.

तत्र तु द्वारपालानां नियमो नास्ति सर्वथा ॥ गृहे लिंगं च यत्पूज्यं तस्मिन्सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥ ३८ ॥
tatra tu dvArapAlAnAM niyamo nAsti sarvathA ॥ gRhe liMgaM ca yatpUjyaM tasminsarvaM pratiSThitam ॥ 38 ॥
It is not obligatory that the gatekeeper shall be worshipped. The liṅga that is worshipped by me can be worshipped in the house. Everything is installed in the same.

पूजाकाले च सांगं वै परिवारेण संयुतम् ॥ आवाह्य पूजयेद्देवं नियमोऽत्र न विद्यते ॥ ३९ ॥
pUjAkAle ca sAMgaM vai parivAreNa saMyutam ॥ AvAhya pUjayeddevaM niyamo'tra na vidyate ॥ 39 ॥
At the time of worship, the lord shall be invoked along with his attendants and paraphernalia. But there is no hard and fast rule governing this aspect.

He shall provide his own seat in the vicinity of Śiva. He shall face the north and perform the rite of Ācamana (sipping water).

Similarly any desirable and desired material shall be offered to Śiva. Thereafter the Vāruṇa Snāna rite (ceremonial ablution) shall be performed to Śiva.

After that, an oil lamp should be offered to Lord Shiva, bathed in ghee. Then, an offering of water (Arghya) should be given to him with the proper mantra, in a spirit of devotion.

Grant me the fruits of worldly enjoyment and liberation (bhukti and mukti). After receiving your offering of water (Arghya), I bow to you. Then, offer a variety of food offerings (Nivedya) to Lord Shiva.

Then, with great joy, the devotee should perform the Achamana (ritualistic sipping of water) with devotion. Following this, offer betel leaves and nuts to Lord Shiva along with other accompaniments.

Light shall be waved four times at the feet; twice in the umbilical region, once near the face and seven times over the whole body.

When performing the offering once, offer it around the face seven times and the whole body. Then, as per the prescribed method, one should meditate and chant the mantras with devotion.

The devotee should perform the chanting of the mantras according to the number and knowledge given. He should follow the path taught by the Guru and perform the mantra japa (repetition of mantras) with intelligence.

Having known this, O Lord of Gauri, O Lord of all beings, be pleased with me. The earth is the support for those whose words falter, just as it is the support for all.

At the time of worship, O Lord, you must come again — thus, having earnestly and repeatedly prayed to Shankara, the compassionate lover of devotees.

visarjayetsvahRdaye tadapo mUrdhni vinyaset॥ iti proktamazeSeNa munayaH zivapUjanam ॥ bhuktimuktipradaM caiva kimanyacchrotumarhatha ॥83॥
Śiva who is favourably disposed to His devotees shall be bidden farewell to abide in the heart. The holy water shall then be applied over the head. O sages, thus I have entirely explained the mode of worshipping Śiva that confers worldly pleasures and salvation. What else do you wish to hear?
