उद्घेद॒भि श्रु॒ताम॑घं वृष॒भं नर्या॑पसम् । अस्ता॑रमेषि सूर्य
udghedabhi śrutāmaghaṃ vṛṣabhaṃ naryāpasam astārameṣi sūrya
The bull that splits open the unheard-of, the sacrificial man—Surya has stood at the mast.

nava yo navatiṃ puro bibheda bāhvojasā ahiṃ ca vṛtrahāvadhīt
He who broke the ninety-nine forts of old by arm-strength; he slew Vritra that day.

स न॒ इन्द्रः॑ शि॒वः सखाश्वा॑व॒द्गोम॒द्यव॑मत् । उ॒रुधा॑रेव दोहते
sa na indraḥ śivaḥ sakhāśvāvadgomadyavamat urudhāreva dohate
That same Indra, auspicious, friend of steeds, like a cow’s bull when he pressed, draws forth milk—he bares the udder.

yadadya kacca vṛtrahannudagā abhi sūrya sarvaṃ tadindra te vaśe
Whatever Vritra once attempted to raise against Indra, all that is now under thy power.

यद्वा॑ प्रवृद्ध सत्पते॒ न म॑रा॒ इति॒ मन्य॑से । उ॒तो तत्स॒त्यमित्तव॑
yadvā pravṛddha satpate na marā iti manyase uto tatsatyamittava
When thou deemest that the strong lord does not die, then indeed is that truth established.

ye somāsaḥ parāvati ye arvāvati sunvire sarvām̐stām̐ indra gacchasi
Those whom the Somadrinks uplift and those whom they call with clarified strength—Thou goest to all of them, O Indra.

I have made Indra mighty, to slay Vritra; he became a bull among bulls.

indraḥ sa dāmane kṛta ojiṣṭhaḥ sa made hitaḥ dyumnī ślokī sa somyaḥ
Indra is the possessor of gifts, eminent in vigour, victorious in might; he is the resplendent, the Soma‑bestowing seer.

girā vajro na sambhṛtaḥ sabalo anapacyutaḥ vavakṣa ṛṣvo astṛtaḥ
The bolt of speech was not held back; the mighty, unerring one spoke; the seers proclaimed it.

durge cinnaḥ sugaṃ kṛdhi gṛṇāna indra girvaṇaḥ tvaṃ ca maghavanvaśaḥ
Struck down in the fortress, you made (them) resound like bulls, O Indra of battle‑cry; you, mighty, were enraged.

यस्य॑ ते॒ नू चि॑दा॒दिशं॒ न मि॒नन्ति॑ स्व॒राज्य॑म् । न दे॒वो नाध्रि॑गु॒र्जनः॑
yasya te nū cidādiśaṃ na minanti svarājyam na devo nādhrigurjanaḥ
Whoever does not place before you the royal dominion, they do not praise it—neither god nor thunderer.

adhā te apratiṣkutaṃ devī śuṣmaṃ saparyataḥ ubhe suśipra rodasī
Beneath you the goddess lay unassailed, dry and all around; both swiftly rejoiced at the dawn.

You established these in the black kine and in the Rohiṇīs; in the Paruṣṇīs you caused milk to flow.

When you, O Slayer, conquered, all the gods advanced like poison; we know the wild beast—those drops of strength.

Bring to me the unobstructed might, the mighty champion who slew Vritra and the like, the unborn enemy destroyed.

Harken to the renowned Vritra‑slayer, to the praised singers' cry; come, listen, most mighty one.

This intellect, like a cow, praised by many, the abundant Soma was born.

Let the Vritra‑slayer with awakening mind be for us a rich progeny; let Śakra hear the blessing.

By what did you not rise up, moving mildly like a bull? By what did you bear (these) to the worshippers?

Whose bull was this? Having yoked it, the bull fought; the Vritra‑slayer for the drinking of Soma.

abhī ṣu ṇastvaṃ rayiṃ mandasānaḥ sahasriṇam prayantā bodhi dāśuṣe
You rain forth wealth, moving mildly, a thousandfold; they go to bring awakening to the Dasa tribe.

Having wives, these sons go to the pasture; the herd approached the waters with lowing.

iṣṭā hotrā asṛkṣatendraṃ vṛdhāso adhvare acchāvabhṛthamojasā
Desired priests invoked Indra, the mighty, at the roadway; they called with powerful song and vigour.

iha tyā sadhamādyā harī hiraṇyakeśyā voḷhāmabhi prayo hitam
Here now the charioteer Hari with golden hair upheld the sacred rite for you; he brought the well‑aimed boon.

tubhyaṃ somāḥ sutā ime stīrṇaṃ barhirvibhāvaso stotṛbhya indramā vaha
Somas, these born ones are offered to you, spread out beyond; O worshippers, carry Indra for the singers.

May they give you skillful brightness, setting jewels for the Dasa; O worshippers, honor Indra.

O Indra, I give you the freed senses and all thousand-fold powers; may Indra placate the worshippers.

May the auspicious and the ever-auspicious not harm us, O thousand-doer; if Indra placates us.

May he bear all our well-formed, noble things, O thousand-doer; if Indra placates us.

We invoke you, slayer of Vritra, born of heroes; if Indra placates us.

Bring for us the son who comes with the Hari gods, O lord of intoxication; bring for us the son with the Hari gods.

Twice slain is he who slew Vritra—behold Indra the thousand-doer. Bring for us the son with the Hari gods.

You indeed are the slayer of Vritra, the slayer of those who obstruct; you are the drink of the Soma-drinkers. Bring for us the son with the Hari gods.

इन्द्र॑ इ॒षे द॑दातु न ऋभु॒क्षण॑मृ॒भुं र॒यिम् । वा॒जी द॑दातु वा॒जिन॑म्
indra iṣe dadātu na ṛbhukṣaṇamṛbhuṃ rayim vājī dadātu vājinam
Indra, grant desire, give wealth for the moment, give us the cattle-bearing prize; grant the giver of wealth.
