Sanjaya said O sire, Drona's son, Bhurishrava, Shalya, Chitrasena, the son of Samyamani all these fought with Subhadra's son.

When he was fighting with these five foremost of men, all saw him endued with great prowess, like a young lion fighting with five elephants.

None among them equaled the son of Arjuna in sureness of aim, in bravery in prowess, in lightness of hands or in the knowledge of weapons.

When Partha saw that chastiser of foes, his son thus fighting and displaying his prowess in battle, he sent up a lion-like shout.

O king, having seen your grandson thus afflict your army, your warriors surrounded him from all sides.

Then that chastiser of foes, the son of Subhadra, depending on his own prowess and might, advanced with under-pressed heart against the army of the Kurus.

Bhurishrava, Shalya, Drona's son, Samyamani and Shala were all seized with panic by seeing the prowess of Arjuna's son. They could not stay before him.

O great king, then urged by your son the Trigartas, the Kaikeyas numbering twenty-five thousands, all of whom were foremost of men accomplished in arms and who were incapable of being defeated by any enemy in battle, surrounded Kiritin with his on in order to kill them both.

O king, that chastiser of foes, the general lissom of the Pandava army, the Panchala prince saw (from a distance) the cars of the father and the son surrounded.

Followed by many thousands of horsemen and foot soldiers and many hundreds of elephants and cars and the Madras and the Kaikayas, with his bow drawn in wrath and with all his troops behind him he advanced.

That division of the Pandava army, protected by that illustrious and firin bow-man and furnished with cars, elephants and horsemen looked exceedingly resplendent as in advanced on battle bent.

When he was thus going to Arjuna's aid, he struck Somadatta's son on his shoulder joint with three arrows.

Wounding the Madrakas with ten sharp arrows, he soon killed the warriors who was protecting the rear of Kritavarma.

That O chastiser of foes, then, with a broadheaded arrow killed Damana, the son of Paurava.

Then the son of Samyamani wounded the invincible Panchalas prince with ten arrows, and his charioteer with ten more.

Then that great bowman having been thus wounded, licked with his tongue the corners of his mouth and cut down his enemy's bow with a broad headed and sharp arrow.

The Panchala prince soon wounded his foe with twenty five arrows and then O king, the killed his horses and then his two wheel protectors.

O best of the Bharata race, Samyamani's son then stood on the car the horses of which were killed, and starred at the illustrious son of the Panchala king.

Then taking up a fearful sword made of steel, he walked on foot and came to Drupada's son who was on the car.

The Pandava soldiers as well as the Prishata prince Dhrishtadyumna saw him coming like a surging wave which resembled a snake fallen from the sky. He whirled his sword and looked like the sun. He advanced with the gait of an enraged elephant.

Thereupon inflamed with rage, the son of the Panchala king, beholding Samyamani's son rush towards him with a sharp sword and buckler in grasp and seeing the other approach his car and beyond the range of arrows crushed his, head with the stroke of his heavy mace.

Then, O monarch, when he was falling down dead, his resplendent sword and shield, loosened from his hands, fell down on th grounds, together with his body.

Thus that high-sculed Panchala prince endued with dreadful might won great fame, by thus having crushed his adversary with his club.

Then, O Sire, when that mighty car-warrior and fierce bowman, that prince, was slain, loud cries of "Oh" and "Alas” war heard in your army.

Thereafter, beholding his own son slain, Samyamani inflamed with wrath, impetuously fell upon the Panchala prince, ever invincible in battle.

Then all the monarchs belonging to the Kuru and the Pandava armies saw those two heroes, those foremost of car-warriors, engaged in battle.

Then Samyamani, that slayer of hostile heroes, excited with rage, struck the son of Prishata with three arrows, like an elephant rider striking the beast with the hook.

Similarly, Shalya also, that beautifier of an assembly, angrily wounded Prishata's heroic son on the breast. Thereupon there commenced another battle.
