व्यास उवाच असुराश्चैव देवाश्च दक्षस्यासन् प्रजापतेः। अपत्यं बहुलं तात संस्पर्धन्त परस्परम्॥ तथैवाङ्गिरस: पुत्रौ व्रततुल्यौ बभूवतुः। बृहस्पतिर्ब्रहत्तेजाः संवर्तश्च तपोधनः॥ तावतिस्पर्धिनौ राजन् पृथगास्तां परस्परम्। बृहस्पतिः स संवर्तं बाधते स्म पुनः पुनः॥
Vyasa thereupon said-As the numerous children of the Prajapati Daksha, the Asuras, and the Celestials challenged each other, so in the same way Angira's sons, the highly energetic Brihaspati and the ascetic. Samvarta, of equal vows, challenged each other, O king. Brihaspati began to worry Samvarta again and again. was

स बाध्यमान् सततं भ्रात्रा ज्येष्ठेन भारत। अर्थानुत्सृज्य दिग्वासा वनवासमरोचयत्॥
And always troubled by his elder brother, he, O Bharata, renouncing his riches, went to the forest, with nothing to cover his body except the open sky.

वासवोऽप्यसुरान् सर्वान् विजित्य च निपात्य च। इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्य लोकेषु ततो वव्रे पुरोहितम्॥ पुत्रमङ्गिरसो ज्येष्ठं विप्रज्येष्ठं बृहस्पतिम्। याज्यस्त्वङ्गिरसः पूर्वमासीद् राजा करंधमः॥ वीर्येणाप्रतिमो लोके वृत्तेन च बलेन च। शतक्रतुरिवौजस्वी धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः॥
(At that time), having defeated and destroyed the Asuras, and gained the sovereignty of the celestial regions, Vasava had appointed as his priest Angira's eldest son, that best of Brahmanas, Brihaspati. Formerly Angira the family-priest of king Karandhama; peerless among men in might, power and character; powerful like Shatakratu. righteous-souled and of rigid vows.

वाहनं यस्य योधाश्च मित्राणि विविधानि च। शयनानि च मुख्यानि महार्हाणि च सर्वशः॥ ध्यानादेवाभवद् राजन् मुखवातेन सर्वशः। स गुणैः पार्थिवान् सर्वान् वशे चक्रे नराधिपः॥
O king, he had vehicles, and warriors, and many adherents, and beautiful and rich bedsteads, produced through mediation by the breath of his mouth. And by his native virtues, the king had brought all the princes under his control.

संजीव्य कालमिष्टं च सशरीरो दिवं गतः। बभूव तस्य पुत्रस्तु ययातिरिव धर्मवित्॥ अविक्षिन्नाम शत्रुजित् स वशे कृतवान् महीम्। विक्रमेण गुणैश्चैव पितेवासीत् स पार्थिवः॥
And having lives as long as he desired, he ascended the celestial region in his bodily form. And his named Avikshitconqueror of enemies-righteous like Yayati, brought all the Earth under his sway. And both in merit and power the king resembled his father. son

तस्य वासवतुल्योऽभून्मरुत्तो नाम वीर्यवान्। पुत्रस्तमनुरक्ताभूत् पृथिवी सागरम्बरा॥
He had a son named Marutta, gifted with energy, and resembling Vasava himself. This earth clad in oceans felt herself attracted towards him.

स्पर्धते स स्म सततं देवराजेन नित्यदा। वासवोऽपि मरुत्तेन स्पर्धते पाण्डुनन्दन॥
He always used to defy the king of the celestials; and, O son of Pandu, Vasava also defied Marutta.

शुचिः स गुणवानासीन्मरुत्तः पृथिवीपतिः। यतमानोऽपि यं शक्रो न विशेषयति स्म ह॥
And Marutta-master of Earth-was pure and perfect. And despite his striving, Shakra could not prevail over him.

And unable to control him, he riding on the horse, along with the celestials summoning Brihaspati, spoke to him thus.

बृहस्पते मरुत्तस्य मा स्म कार्षीः कथंचन। दैवं कर्माथ पित्र्यं वा कर्तासि मम चेत् प्रियम्॥ अहं हि त्रिषु लोकेषु सुराणां च बृहस्पते। इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्तवानेको मरुत्तस्तु महीपतिः॥
O Brihaspati, if we wish to do what is agreeable to me, do not perform priestly offices for Marutta on behalf of the celestials or the departed Manes. I have, O Brihaspati, obtained the sovereignty of the three worlds, while Marutta is merely the king of the Earth.

कथं ह्यमयं ब्रह्मंस्त्वं याजयित्वा सुराधिपम्। याजयेर्मृत्युसंयुक्तं मरुत्तमविशङ्कया॥
How, O Brahmana, having acted as priest to the immortal king of the celestials, will you unhesitatingly act as a priest to Marutta subject to death?

मां वा वृणीष्व भद्रं ते मरुत्तं वा महीपतिम्। परित्यज्य मरुत्तं वा यथाजोषं भजस्व माम्॥
May you fare well. Either take up my side or that of the king, Marutta, or forsaking Marutta, gladly come over to me.

You are the Lord of creatures, and in you are the worlds established. And you have killed Namuchi Vishvarupa and Vala.

त्वमाजहर्थ देवानामेको वीरश्रियं पराम्। त्वं बिभर्षि भुवं द्यां च सदैव बलसूदन॥
You, O hero, alone, bring about the highest prosperity of the celestials, and O slayer of Bala, you sustain the carth as well as the celestial region.

पौरोहित्यं कथं कृत्वा तव देवगणेश्वर। याजयेयमहं मर्त्य मरुत्तं पाकशासन॥ समाश्वसिहि देवेन्द्र नाहं मर्त्यस्य कर्हिचित्। ग्रहीष्यामि स्रुवं यज्ञे शृणु चेदं वचो मम॥
How, O foremost of the celestials, having officiated as you priest, shall I, O destroyer of Paka, O lord of gods, be passions, I will not take ladle in men's sacrifice, serve a mortal prince and listen to what I say.

हिरण्यरेता नोष्ण स्यात् परिवर्तेत मेदिनी। भासं तु न रविः कुर्यान्न तु सत्यं चलेन्मयि॥
Even if the god of fire cease to cause heat and warmth, or the earth change its nature, or the sun cease to give light, I shall never deviate from the truth.

वैशम्पायन उवाच बृहस्पतिवचः श्रुत्वा शक्रो विगतमत्सरः। प्रशस्यैनं विवेशाथ स्वमेव भवनं तदा॥
Vaishampayana said On hearing these words of Brihaspati, Indra became freed from his envious feelings, and then lauding him he repaired to his own palace.
