वैशम्पायन उवाच ततः स भग्नपार्वाङ्गो नदित्वा भैरवं रवम। शैलराजप्रतीकाशो. गतासुरभवद् बकः॥
Vaishampayana said : Baka, huge as a mountain, being thus broken by Bhima, died uttering fearful yells.

तेन शब्देन वित्रस्तो जनस्तस्याथ रक्षसः। निष्पपात गृहाद् राजन् सहैव परिचारिभः॥ तान् भीतान् विगतज्ञानान् भीमः प्रहरतां वरः। सान्त्वयामास बलवान् समये च न्यवेशयत्॥ न हिंस्या मानुषा भूयो युष्माभिरिति कर्हिचित्। हिंसतां हि वधः शीघ्रमेवमेव भवेदिति॥
O king, terrified by that noise, the relatives of that Rakshasas with their attendants came out of their houses. Seeing them terrified and deprived of reason, that best of all wielders of arms, the strong Bhima, comforted them and made them promise (to give up cannibalism.) Bhima said: Do not again kill men. If you do it, you will be killed like this (Baka).

Vaishampayana said : C descendant of Bharata, hearing his these words, those Rakshasas gave the desired promise by saying "Be it so."

ततः प्रभृति रक्षांसि तत्र सौम्यानि भारत। नगरे प्रत्यदृश्यन्त नरनगरवासिभिः॥
O descendant of Bharata, from that day the people inhabiting that town saw the Rakshasas vary peaceful towards mankind.

ततो भीमस्तमादाय गतासुं पुरुषादकम्। द्वारदेशे विनिक्षिप्य जगामानुपलक्षितः॥
Then Bhima took the dead cannibal and placed him at one of the gates (of the city) unobserved by anyone, he then went away.

दृष्ट्वा भीमबलोद्भूतं बकं विनिहतं तदा। ज्ञातयोऽस्य भयोद्विग्नाः प्रतिजग्मुस्ततस्ततः॥
Seeing Baka killed by Bhima and his extraordinary strength, the kinsmen (of the Rakshasas) became frightened and ran away in different directions.

ततः स भीमस्तं हत्वा गत्वा ब्राह्मणवेश्म तत्। आचचक्षे यथावृतं राज्ञः सर्वमशेषतः॥
Then Bhima, thus killing him (Baka), returned to the house of the Brahmana and described to the prince (Yudhisthira) in detail all that had happened.

ततो नरा विनिष्क्रान्ता नगरात् कल्यमेव तु। ददृशुनिहतं भूमौ राक्षसं रुधिरोक्षितम्॥
The next morning the inhabitants of the town, in coming out, saw the Rakshasas lying dead on the ground, his body covered with blood.

तमद्रिकूटसदृशं विनिकीर्णं भयानकम्। दृष्ट्वा संहृष्टरोमाणो बभूवुस्तत्र नागराः॥
The citizens' hair stood on end when they saw the fearful cannibal, as huge as a mountain cliff.

एकचक्रां ततो गत्वा प्रवृत्तिं प्रददुः पुरे। ततः सहस्रशो राजन् नरा नगरवासिनः॥ तत्राजग्मुर्बकं दुष्टं सस्त्रीवृद्धकुमारकाः। ततस्ते विस्मिताः सर्वे कर्म दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम्। दैवतान्यर्चयांचक्रुः सर्व एव विशाम्पते॥
Going to Ekachakra, they soon gave the intelligence; thereupon, O king, thousands of the citizens. Accompanied by their wives both young and old, (all) went there to see Baka. They were all astonished at seeing the superhuman feat. O king they began to worship the gods.

ततः प्रगणयामासुः कस्य वारोऽद्य भोजने। ज्ञात्वा चागम्य तं विप्रं पप्रच्छुः सर्व एव ते॥
They then began to calculate whose turn was to supply food (to the Rakshasas) on the previous day. Ascertaining this, they all came to that Brahmana and asked him (if he knew any thing about the matter).

एवं पृष्टः स बहुशो रक्षमाणश्च पाण्डवान्। उवाच नागरान् सर्वानिदं विप्रर्षभस्तदा॥
Having been thus repeatedly asked by them that best of Brahmanas thus spoke to all the citizens in order to conceal the Pandavas.

आज्ञापितं मामशने रुदन्तं सह बन्धुभिः। ददर्श ब्राह्मणः कश्चिन्मन्त्रसिद्धो महामनाः॥
Seeing me weeping with my friends when I was ordered to supply the food (for the Rakshasas ), a high-minded Brahmana, learned in Mantras, saw me.

परिपृच्छ्य स मां पूर्वं परिक्लेशं पुरस्य च। अब्रवीद् ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठो विश्वास्य प्रहसन्निव॥ प्रापयिष्याम्यहं तस्मा अन्मेतद् दुरात्मने। मन्निमित्तं भयं चापि न कार्यमिति चाब्रवीत्॥
Asking me the cause and knowing the calamity that hangs over the town, that best of Bra' manas ga e me every assurance and spoke to me with smiles, “I shall today carry the food to that wicked-minded wretch. "Do not fear for me." He said this.

स तदन्नमुपादाय गतो बकवनं प्रति। तेन नूनं भवेदेतत् कर्म लोकहितं कृतम्॥
And taking the food, set out for the forest where Baka lived. This deed, so beneficial to us, must have been done by him.

ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे क्षत्रियाश्च सुविस्मितः। वैश्याः शूद्राश्च मुदिताश्चक्रुर्ब्रह्ममहं तदा।॥
Thereupon all the Brahmanas and Kshatriyas became exceedingly astonished and the Vaishyas and Shudras became exceedingly glad.

ततो जानपदाः सर्वे आजग्मुर्नगरं प्रति। तदद्भुततमं द्रष्टुं पार्थास्तत्रैव चावसन्॥
Thereupon all the citizens returned to the city after seeing that extraordinary feat. The Pandavas also lived there.
