अत ऊर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि यतीनामिह निश्चितम। प्रायश्चित्तं शिवप्रोक्तं यतीनां पापशोधनम।।
ata ūrdhvaṃ pravakṣyāmi yatīnāmiha niścitam| prāyaścittaṃ śivaproktaṃ yatīnāṃ pāpaśodhanam||
Sūta said:: Henceforth, I shall mention decisively the mode of expiation [prāyaścitta] by asectics. This is recounted by Siva and it makes adequate atonement for the sins of ascetics.

पापं हि त्रिविधं ज्ञेयं वाङ्मनःकायसंभवम। सततं हि दिवा रात्रौ येनेदं वेष्ट्यते जगत।।
pāpaṃ hi trividhaṃ jñeyaṃ vāṅmanaḥkāyasaṃbhavam| satataṃ hi divā rātrau yenedaṃ veṣṭyate jagat||
Sūta said:: Sins are of three types: those originating from speech, mind and body. It is by these that the universe is encompassed always, by day and by night.

तत्कर्मणा विनाप्येष तिष्ठतीति परा श्रुतिः। क्षणमेवं प्रयोज्यं तु आयुष्यं तु विधारणम।।
tatkarmaṇā vināpyeṣa tiṣṭhatīti parā śrutiḥ| kṣaṇamevaṃ prayojyaṃ tu āyuṣyaṃ tu vidhāraṇam||
Sūta said:: “Without activities the world cannot be sustained even, for a moment”, says the sacred Śruti. It is the only instrument that is conducive to longevity and sustenance.

भवेद्योगो ऽप्रमत्तस्य योगो हि परमं बलम। न हि योगात्परं किंचिन नराणां दृश्यते शुभम।।
bhavedyogo 'pramattasya yogo hi paramaṃ balam| na hi yogātparaṃ kiṃcin narāṇāṃ dṛśyate śubham||
Sūta said:: It is only to the unerring that the yoga becomes accessible. Indeed, yoga is the greatest strength. There is no other auspicious thing for men. that is greater than yoga.

तस्माद योगं प्रशंसन्ति धर्मयुक्ता मनीषिणः। अविद्यां विद्यया जित्वा प्राप्यैश्वर्यमनुत्तमम।।
tasmād yogaṃ praśaṃsanti dharmayuktā manīṣiṇaḥ| avidyāṃ vidyayā jitvā prāpyaiśvaryamanuttamam||
Sūta said:: Hence, learned men endowed with virtue praise yoga. They shall conquer (ignorance) by knowledge and attain excellent aiśvarya. After seeing the greatest being inferior to none, the self-possessed ones will attain that region. There are main and subsidiary holy rites to be observed by the mendicants (Bhikṣus). Expiatory rites are also laid down for violating any of them.

prāṇāyāmasamāyuktaṃ caretsāṃtapanaṃ vratam| tataścarati nirdeśāt kṛcchraṃ cānte samāhitaḥ||
Sūta said:: He shall perform Prāṇāyāma and observe the rite Sāntapana.[1] Then, with great concentration and attention at the end, he shall perform the Kṛcchra[2] rite in accordance with the direction.

पुनर आश्रमम आगत्य चरेद्भिक्षुरतन्द्रितः। न धर्मयुक्तमनृतं हिनस्तीति मनीषिणः।।
punar āśramam āgatya caredbhikṣuratandritaḥ| na dharmayuktamanṛtaṃ hinastīti manīṣiṇaḥ||
Sūta said:: Again the Bhikṣu shall return to the hermitage and perform the rite alertfully. Learned men say that a virtuous falsehood does not injure one. Still it should not be pursued. Its mere context is terrible. The expiatory rite is fasting for a night and a day and a hundred Prāṇāyāmas.

तथापि न च कर्तव्यं प्रसंगो ह्येष दारुणः। अहोरात्रोपवासश च प्राणायामशतं तथा।।
tathāpi na ca kartavyaṃ prasaṃgo hyeṣa dāruṇaḥ| ahorātropavāsaś ca prāṇāyāmaśataṃ tathā||

Sūta said:: Evil utterance and discussion shall not be pursued by an ascetic desirous of attaining Dharma. Thieving shall not be indulged in even when he is in. great distress.

स्तेयादभ्यधिकः कश्चिन नास्त्यधर्म इति श्रुतिः। हिंसा ह्येषा परा सृष्टा स्तैन्यं वै कथितं तथा।।
steyādabhyadhikaḥ kaścin nāstyadharma iti śrutiḥ| hiṃsā hyeṣā parā sṛṣṭā stainyaṃ vai kathitaṃ tathā||
Sūta said:: Śruti says that there is no evil greater than stealing. What is mentioned as “stealing” is a great violence that is inseparable from it. What is named “wealth” constitutes the external vital airs (Prāṇas). Hence, he who takes away the wealth of anyone really takes away the vital airs of that person.

यदेतद्द्रविणं नाम प्राणा ह्येते बहिश्चराः। स तस्य हरते प्राणान यो यस्य हरते धनम।।
yadetaddraviṇaṃ nāma prāṇā hyete bahiścarāḥ| sa tasya harate prāṇān yo yasya harate dhanam||
Sūta said:: Śruti says that there is no evil greater than stealing. What is mentioned as “stealing” is a great violence that is inseparable from it. What is named “wealth” constitutes the external vital airs (Prāṇas). Hence, he who takes away the wealth of anyone really takes away the vital airs of that person.

एवं कृत्वा सुदुष्टात्मा भिन्नवृत्तो व्रताच्च्युतः। भूयो निर्वेदमापन्नश चरेच्चान्द्रायणं व्रतम।।
evaṃ kṛtvā suduṣṭātmā bhinnavṛtto vratāccyutaḥ| bhūyo nirvedamāpannaś careccāndrāyaṇaṃ vratam||
Sūta said:: A person who is wicked in mind becomes one who has transgressed the bounds of good conduct by doing so (i.e. by stealing). He becomes one who has fallen down, from his holy rite. He shall repent for it again and again and perform the rite of Cāndrāyaṇa[3] for a year in accordance with the injunctions laid down in scriptures. So says Śruti. At the end of the year he shall eliminate all his sins. The Bhikṣu shall then alertfully repent and perform the rites.

विधिना शास्त्रदृष्टेन संवत्सरमिति श्रुतिः। ततः संवत्सरस्यान्ते भूयः प्रक्षीणकल्मषः। पुनर्निर्वेदमापन्नश चरेद्भिक्षुरतन्द्रितः।।
vidhinā śāstradṛṣṭena saṃvatsaramiti śrutiḥ| tataḥ saṃvatsarasyānte bhūyaḥ prakṣīṇakalmaṣaḥ| punarnirvedamāpannaś caredbhikṣuratandritaḥ||

चरेद्धि शुद्धः समलोष्टकाञ्चनः समस्तभूतेषु च सत्समाहितः। स्थानं ध्रुवं शाश्वतमव्ययं तु परं हि गत्वा न पुनर्हि जायते।।
careddhi śuddhaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcanaḥ samastabhūteṣu ca satsamāhitaḥ| sthānaṃ dhruvaṃ śāśvatamavyayaṃ tu paraṃ hi gatvā na punarhi jāyate||
Sūta said:: One shall view a lump of clay and gold alike and parform the rites. He shall be pure and clean. He shall have great concentration and attention in regard to all living beings. By living thus he attains that stable, unchanging and great abode from where he is not born again.
