sūta suvyaktamakhilaṃ kathitaṃ śaṅkarasya tu| sarvātmabhāvaṃ rudrasya svarūpaṃ vaktumarhasi||
The sages said: O Sūta, everything pertaining to Lord Śiva has been clearly stated. It behoves you to narrate the form of the lord as the soul of all.

भूर्भुवः स्वर्महश्चैव जनः साक्षात्तपस तथा। सत्यलोकश च पातालं नरकार्णवकोटयः।।
bhūrbhuvaḥ svarmahaścaiva janaḥ sākṣāttapas tathā| satyalokaś ca pātālaṃ narakārṇavakoṭayaḥ||
Sūta said: Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ, Mahaḥ, Jana, Tapas, Satya, Pātāla, the crores of hellish seas, stars, planets, the sun, the moon, the polar star, the seven sages (Great Bear) and those going about in aerial chariots—all these abide by his grace.

तारकाग्रहसोमार्का ध्रुवः सप्तर्षयस तथा। वैमानिकास्तथान्ये च तिष्ठन्त्यस्य प्रसादतः।।
tārakāgrahasomārkā dhruvaḥ saptarṣayas tathā| vaimānikāstathānye ca tiṣṭhantyasya prasādataḥ||
Sūta said: Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ, Svaḥ, Mahaḥ, Jana, Tapas, Satya, Pātāla, the crores of hellish seas, stars, planets, the sun, the moon, the polar star, the seven sages (Great Bear) and those going about in aerial chariots—all these abide by his grace.

अनेन निर्मितास्त्वेवं तदात्मानो द्विजर्षभाः। समष्टिरूपः सर्वात्मा संस्थितः सर्वदा शिवः।।
anena nirmitāstvevaṃ tadātmāno dvijarṣabhāḥ| samaṣṭirūpaḥ sarvātmā saṃsthitaḥ sarvadā śivaḥ||
Sūta said: All these are created by him. O excellent brahmins, they have him as their soul. Śiva is always stationed in the form of samaṣṭi (the collective whole). He is the soul of all.

सर्वात्मानं महात्मानं महादेवं महेश्वरम। न विजानन्ति संमूढा मायया तस्य मोहिताः।।
sarvātmānaṃ mahātmānaṃ mahādevaṃ maheśvaram| na vijānanti saṃmūḍhā māyayā tasya mohitāḥ||
Sūta said: Those who are confounded, those who are deluded by his Māyā do not know the great lord Maheśvara the noble soul, the Ātman of all.

तस्य देवस्य रुद्रस्य शरीरं वै जगत्त्रयम। तस्मात्प्रणम्य तं वक्ष्ये जगतां निर्णयं शुभम।।
tasya devasya rudrasya śarīraṃ vai jagattrayam| tasmātpraṇamya taṃ vakṣye jagatāṃ nirṇayaṃ śubham||
Sūta said: Indeed the three worlds constitute his body. Hence after bowing to him I shall recount the splendid detail of the worlds.

पुरा वः कथितं सर्वं मयाण्डस्य यथा कृतिः। भुवनानां स्वरूपं च ब्रह्माण्डे कथयाम्यहम।।
purā vaḥ kathitaṃ sarvaṃ mayāṇḍasya yathā kṛtiḥ| bhuvanānāṃ svarūpaṃ ca brahmāṇḍe kathayāmyaham||
Sūta said: Formerly, I had mentioned to you about the shape and features of the Cosmic Egg. I shall now describe the features of the worlds in the cosmic Egg.

पृथिवी चान्तरिक्षं च स्वर्महर्जन एव च। तपः सत्यं च सप्तैते लोकास्त्वण्डोद्भवाः शुभाः।।
pṛthivī cāntarikṣaṃ ca svarmaharjana eva ca| tapaḥ satyaṃ ca saptaite lokāstvaṇḍodbhavāḥ śubhāḥ||
Sūta said: The Earth, the firmament, Svaḥ, Mahaḥ, Jana, Tapas and Satya—these seven are the splendid worlds originating from the Cosmic Egg.

अधस्तादत्र चैतेषां द्विजाः सप्त तलानि तु। महातलादयस्तेषां अधस्तान्नरकाः क्रमात।।
adhastādatra caiteṣāṃ dvijāḥ sapta talāni tu| mahātalādayasteṣāṃ adhastānnarakāḥ kramāt||
Sūta said: O brahmins, beneath these are the seven worlds beginning with Mahātala. Beneath them are the hells one by one.

महातलं हेमतलं सर्वरत्नोपशोभितम। प्रासादैश च विचित्रैश च भवस्यायतनैस तथा।।
mahātalaṃ hematalaṃ sarvaratnopaśobhitam| prāsādaiś ca vicitraiś ca bhavasyāyatanais tathā||
Sūta said: Mahātala has the golden ground surface, which is rendered splendid by jewels, mansions and shrines dedicated to lord Śiva.

अनन्तेन च संयुक्तं मुचुकुन्देन धीमता। नृपेण बलिना चैव पातालस्वर्गवासिना।।
anantena ca saṃyuktaṃ mucukundena dhīmatā| nṛpeṇa balinā caiva pātālasvargavāsinā||
Sūta said: It is occupied by Ananta, Mucukunda and king Bali who is the resident of Pātāla and Svarga.

शैलं रसातलं विप्राः शार्करं हि तलातलम। पीतं सुतलमित्युक्तं वितलं विद्रुमप्रभम।।
śailaṃ rasātalaṃ viprāḥ śārkaraṃ hi talātalam| pītaṃ sutalamityuktaṃ vitalaṃ vidrumaprabham||
Sūta said: O brāhmins, Rasātala is rocky, Talātala is full of gravels, Sutala is yellow and Vitala has the lustre of coral.

सितं हि अतलं तच्च तलं यच्च सितेतरम। क्ष्मायास्तु यावद्विस्तारो ह्य अधस्तेषां च सुव्रताः।।
sitaṃ hi atalaṃ tacca talaṃ yacca sitetaram| kṣmāyāstu yāvadvistāro hy adhasteṣāṃ ca suvratāḥ||
Sūta said: Atala is white. Tala is black. O men of good holy rites, the extent of all the Talas below is as much as that of the earth, viz., 1000 yojanas each. The sky above each Tala extends to ten thousand yojanas. The magnitude of all the seven along with the clouds is seven thousand lakhs of yojanas. The root (i.e. the space below the last world Pātāla) is thirty thousand yojanas.

Sūta said: Atala is white. Tala is black. O men of good holy rites, the extent of all the Talas below is as much as that of the earth, viz., 1000 yojanas each. The sky above each Tala extends to ten thousand yojanas. The magnitude of all the seven along with the clouds is seven thousand lakhs of yojanas. lakṣaṃ saptasahasraṃ hi talānāṃ saghanasya tu| vyomnaḥ pramāṇaṃ mūlaṃ tu triṃśatsāhasrakeṇa tu||
Sūta said: Atala is white. Tala is black. O men of good holy rites, the extent of all the Talas below is as much as that of the earth, viz., 1000 yojanas each. The sky above each Tala extends to ten thousand yojanas. The magnitude of all the seven along with the clouds is seven thousand lakhs of yojanas. suvarṇena muniśreṣṭhās tathā vāsukinā śubham| rasātalamiti khyātaṃ tathānyaiś ca niṣevitam||
Sūta said: O excellent sages, the splendid Rasātala is frequented by Suvarṇa, Vāsuki and by others as well.

विरोचनहिरण्याक्ष- नरकाद्यैश च सेवितम। तलातलमिति ख्यातं सर्वशोभासमन्वितम।।
virocanahiraṇyākṣa- narakādyaiś ca sevitam| talātalamiti khyātaṃ sarvaśobhāsamanvitam||
Sūta said: What is famous as Talātala is endowed with all splendours and is frequented by Virocana, Hiraṇyākṣa, Naraka and others.

वैनायकादिभिश्चैव कालनेमिपुरोगमैः। पूर्वदेवैः समाकीर्णं सुतलं च तथापरैः।।
vaināyakādibhiścaiva kālanemipurogamaiḥ| pūrvadevaiḥ samākīrṇaṃ sutalaṃ ca tathāparaiḥ||
Sūta said: Sutala is occupied by Vaināyaka and others, by Pūrvadevas (demons) with Kālanemi at the head and by others too.

वितलं दानवाद्यैश च तारकाग्निमुखैस तथा। महान्तकाद्यैर नागैश च प्रह्लादेनासुरेण च।।
vitalaṃ dānavādyaiś ca tārakāgnimukhais tathā| mahāntakādyair nāgaiś ca prahlādenāsureṇa ca||
Sūta said: Vitala is occupied by Dānavas and others beginning with Tārakāgni, serpents Mahāntaka and others and by the Asura Prahlāda.

वितलं चात्र विख्यातं कम्बलाश्वनिषेवितम। महाकुम्भेन वीरेण हयग्रीवेण धीमता।।
vitalaṃ cātra vikhyātaṃ kambalāśvaniṣevitam| mahākumbhena vīreṇa hayagrīveṇa dhīmatā||
Sūta said: Atala is occupied by Kambalāśva, by the heroic Mahākumbha and the intelligent Hayagrīva.

शङ्कुकर्णेन संभिन्नं तथा नमुचिपूर्वकैः। तथान्यैर विविधैर वीरैस तलं चैव सुशोभितम।।
śaṅkukarṇena saṃbhinnaṃ tathā namucipūrvakaiḥ| tathānyair vividhair vīrais talaṃ caiva suśobhitam||
Sūta said: Tala (i.e. Mahātala) is rendered splendid and occupied by Śaṅkukarṇa and other heroes beginning with Namuci.

तलेषु तेषु सर्वेषु चाम्बया परमेश्वरः। स्कन्देन नन्दिना सार्धं गणपैः सर्वतो वृतः।।
taleṣu teṣu sarveṣu cāmbayā parameśvaraḥ| skandena nandinā sārdhaṃ gaṇapaiḥ sarvato vṛtaḥ||
Sūta said: In all these nether worlds the great lord is present along with Umā, Skanda, Nandin and all the chieftains of Gaṇas. O excellent ones, above all these seven Talas are the earth and other worlds. The earth too is of seven divisions about which I shall tell you now.

तलानां चैव सर्वेषाम ऊर्ध्वतः सप्तसप्तमाः। क्ष्मातलानि धरा चापि सप्तधा कथयामि वः।।
talānāṃ caiva sarveṣām ūrdhvataḥ saptasaptamāḥ| kṣmātalāni dharā cāpi saptadhā kathayāmi vaḥ||
Sūta said: In all these nether worlds the great lord is present along with Umā, Skanda, Nandin and all the chieftains of Gaṇas. O excellent ones, above all these seven Talas are the earth and other worlds. The earth too is of seven divisions about which I shall tell you now.
