किमर्थं तु वनं दग्धमापवस्य महात्मनः। कार्त्तवीर्येण विक्रम्य तन्नः प्रब्रूहि पृच्छताम।।
kimarthaṃ tu vanaṃ dagdhamāpavasya mahātmanaḥ| kārttavīryeṇa vikramya tannaḥ prabrūhi pṛcchatām||
The sages enquired:: Why was the forest of Āpava, the noble-souled one, burnt by Kārttavīrya forcibly? Tell us this in details even as we ask.

रक्षिता सतु राजर्षिः प्रजानामिति नः श्रुतम। कथं सरक्षिता भूत्वा नाशयेत तपोवनम।।
rakṣitā satu rājarṣiḥ prajānāmiti naḥ śrutam| kathaṃ sarakṣitā bhūtvā nāśayeta tapovanam||
The sages enquired:: We have heard that saintly king was the protector of the subjects. Protector of subjects as he was, how could he destroy the penance-grove?
