इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्त मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपाद्धातपादे ऽष्टपञ्चशत्तमो ऽध्यायः।। 58।। ऋषयस्त्वेव मुक्तास्तु परं हर्षमुपागताः। परं शुश्रूषया भूयः पप्रच्छुस्तदनन्तरम।।
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokta madhyamabhāge tṛtīya upāddhātapāde 'ṣṭapañcaśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 58|| ṛṣayastveva muktāstu paraṃ harṣamupāgatāḥ| paraṃ śuśrūṣayā bhūyaḥ papracchustadanantaram||
Bṛhaspati said: The sages who were told thus attained great delight. Thereafter, they further asked with a desire to hear more.

वंशानामानुपूर्व्येण राज्ञां चामिततेजसाम। स्थितिं चैषां प्रभावं च ब्रूहि नः परिपृच्छताम।।
vaṃśānāmānupūrvyeṇa rājñāṃ cāmitatejasām| sthitiṃ caiṣāṃ prabhāvaṃ ca brūhi naḥ paripṛcchatām||
The Sages requested: “Please narrate the details of the races of kings of unmeasured prowess, their life and their powers and majesty, to us as we ask in the proper order.”

The Sages requested: On being requested thus by them, Lomaharṣaṇa, an expert in narration of stories, well conversant with statements, spoke these words even as the sages were desirous of listening to the later narratives.

वरुणस्य सपत्नीकान स्तुता देवी उदाहृता। तस्याः पुत्रौ कलिर्वैद्यः स्तुता च सुरसुंदरी।।
varuṇasya sapatnīkān stutā devī udāhṛtā| tasyāḥ putrau kalirvaidyaḥ stutā ca surasuṃdarī||
Sūta said: It is related that Varuṇa’s wife, goddess Stutā (Sunā in Vāyu 84-6-8), was a celestial damsel of great beauty. Her sons were Kali and Vaidya.

कलिपुत्रौ महावीर्यौं जयश्च विजयश्च ह। वैद्यपुत्रौ घृणिश्चैव मुनिश्चैव महाबलौ।।
kaliputrau mahāvīryauṃ jayaśca vijayaśca ha| vaidyaputrau ghṛṇiścaiva muniścaiva mahābalau||
Sūta said: Jaya and Vijaya were the sons of Kali. They were extremely valorous. Ghṛṇi and Muni were the sons of Vaidya. They were very powerful.

प्रत्तानामनु कामानामन्योन्यस्य प्रभक्षिणौ। भक्ष्यित्वा तावन्योन्यं विनाशं समवाप्नुतः।।
prattānāmanu kāmānāmanyonyasya prabhakṣiṇau| bhakṣyitvā tāvanyonyaṃ vināśaṃ samavāpnutaḥ||
Sūta said: They used to devour girls given in marriage to them or those who loved them. They devoured one another. After devouring one another, they met with destruction.

कलिः सुरायाः संज्ञेयस्तस्य पुत्रो मदः स्मृतः। स्मृता हिंसा कलेर्भार्या श्रेष्ठा या निकृतस्मृतिः।।
kaliḥ surāyāḥ saṃjñeyastasya putro madaḥ smṛtaḥ| smṛtā hiṃsā kalerbhāryā śreṣṭhā yā nikṛtasmṛtiḥ||
Sūta said: Kali (this is evidently another one not the one mentioned in 7) should be known as Sura’s (?) son. His son is remembered as Mada. Hiṃsā was the eldest wife of Kali. She is remembered as wicked and dishonest.

प्रसूतान्ये कलेः पुत्राश्चत्वारः पुरुषादकाः। नाके विघ्नश्च विख्यातो भद्रमोविधमस्तथा।।
prasūtānye kaleḥ putrāścatvāraḥ puruṣādakāḥ| nāke vighnaśca vikhyāto bhadramovidhamastathā||
Sūta said: Four other sons were born to Kali. They were cannibals. They were Nāka, and Vighna who were very famous, as well as Bhadrama and Vidhama.

अशिरस्कतया विघ्नो नाकश्चैवाशरीरवान। भद्रमश्चैकहस्तो ऽभूद्विधमश्चैकपात्स्मृतः।।
aśiraskatayā vighno nākaścaivāśarīravān| bhadramaścaikahasto 'bhūdvidhamaścaikapātsmṛtaḥ||
Sūta said: Vighna was so called because he had no head. Nāka had no body. Bhadrama had only one hand. Vidhama is remembered as single-legged.

भद्रमस्य तथापत्नी तामसी पूतना तथा। रेवती विधमस्यापि तयोः पुत्राः सहस्रशः।।
bhadramasya tathāpatnī tāmasī pūtanā tathā| revatī vidhamasyāpi tayoḥ putrāḥ sahasraśaḥ||
Sūta said: Tāmasī and Pūtanā were the wives of Bhadrama (or Pūtanā of dark and foul nature was the wife of Bhadrama). Revatī was the wife of Vidhama. The sons of these two were thousands in number.

नाकस्य शकुनिः पत्नी विघ्नस्य च अयो मुखी। राक्षसास्तु महावीर्याः संध्याद्वयविचारिमः।।
nākasya śakuniḥ patnī vighnasya ca ayo mukhī| rākṣasāstu mahāvīryāḥ saṃdhyādvayavicārimaḥ||
Sūta said: Śakuni was the wife of Nāka and Ayomukhī the wife of Vighna. Their sons were Rākṣasas of great vigour and vitality. They used to roam about during the twilight at dusk and dawn.

रेवतीपूतनापुत्रा नैऋता नामतः स्मृताः। ग्रहस्ते राक्षसाः सर्वे बालानां तु विशेषतः।।
revatīpūtanāputrā naiṛtā nāmataḥ smṛtāḥ| grahaste rākṣasāḥ sarve bālānāṃ tu viśeṣataḥ||
Sūta said: The sons of Revatī and Pūtanā are remembered as Nairṛtas by name. All those Rākṣasas are Grahas (Evil demons attacking children and making them suffer from convulsions) particularly in regard to children.

skandasteṣāmadhipatirbrahmaṇo 'numataḥ prabhuḥ| bṛhaspateryā bhaginī varastrī brahmacāriṇī||
Sūta said: Lord Skanda is the overlord of all those Nairṛtas as allowed by Brahmā.

Sūta said: Lord Skanda is the overlord of all those Nairṛtas as allowed by Brahmā.

Sūta said: (Partially defective text). Viśvakarman, a Deva was born of her. He is the Prajāpati (Creator) of artisans and craftsmen. He had evolved the forms ofVirāṭ (the supreme being). Another name of this liberal-minded grandson of Dharma is Tvaṣṭṛ,

viśvakarmātmajaśvaiva viśvakarmā mayaḥ smṛtaḥ| sureṇuriti vikhyātā svasā tasya yavīyasī||
Sūta said: Maya is remembered as the son of Viśvakarman. He was himself Viśvakarman (capable of all creative work). His younger sister was well known as Sureṇu.

त्वाष्ट्री या सवितुर्भार्या पुनः संज्ञेति विश्रुता। प्रासूत सा महाभागं मनुं ज्येष्ठं विवस्वतः।।
tvāṣṭrī yā saviturbhāryā punaḥ saṃjñeti viśrutā| prāsūta sā mahābhāgaṃ manuṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ vivasvataḥ||
Sūta said: The daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ who became well-known, as Saṃjñā and the wife of Savitṛ (the Sun) gave birth to Manu, the eldest son of great fortune and exalted dignity, of Vivasvān. (the sun).

yamau prāsūta ca punaryamaṃ ca yamunāṃ ca ha| sā tu gatvā kurūndevī vaḍavā rūpadhāriṇī||
Sūta said: The daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ who became well-known, as Saṃjñā and the wife of Savitṛ (the Sun) gave birth to Manu, the eldest son of great fortune and exalted dignity, of Vivasvān. (the sun).

savituścāsya rūpasya nāsikābhyāṃ tu tau smṛtau| prāsūta sā mahābhāga tvantarikṣe 'śvinau kila||
Sūta said: The daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ who became well-known, as Saṃjñā and the wife of Savitṛ (the Sun) gave birth to Manu, the eldest son of great fortune and exalted dignity, of Vivasvān. (the sun).

नासत्यं चैव दस्रं च मार्त्तण्डस्यात्मजावुभौ। कस्मान्मार्त्तण्ड इत्येष विवस्वानुदितो बुधैः।।
nāsatyaṃ caiva dasraṃ ca mārttaṇḍasyātmajāvubhau| kasmānmārttaṇḍa ityeṣa vivasvānudito budhaiḥ||
The sages enquired: “Why was Vivasvān called Mārtaṇḍa byscholars? Why should that fair lady deliver through her nostrils? We wish to understand this. Narrate it to us who ask you.”

किमर्थं सासुरूपा वै नासिकाभ्यामसूयत। एतद्वेदितुमिच्छामो सर्वं नो ब्रूहि पृच्छताम।।
kimarthaṃ sāsurūpā vai nāsikābhyāmasūyata| etadveditumicchāmo sarvaṃ no brūhi pṛcchatām||
The sages enquired: “Why was Vivasvān called Mārtaṇḍa byscholars? Why should that fair lady deliver through her nostrils? We wish to understand this. Narrate it to us who ask you.”

चिरोत्पन्नमतिर्भिन्नमण्डं त्वष्ट्रा विदारितम। गर्भवधं भ्रान्तः कश्यपो विद्रुतो भवेत।।
cirotpannamatirbhinnamaṇḍaṃ tvaṣṭrā vidāritam| garbhavadhaṃ bhrāntaḥ kaśyapo vidruto bhavet||
Sūta replied: “Even for a long time after it had been produced, the egg (the foetus) remained unbroken. That egg was broken by Tvaṣṭṛ. Bewildered by the destruction of the egg (foetus) as he mistook it, Kaśyapa fled from there.

अण्डे द्विधाकृते त्वण्डं दृष्ट्वा त्वष्टेदमब्रवीत। नैतन्न्यूनं भवादण्डं मार्त्तण्डस्त्वं भवानघ।।
aṇḍe dvidhākṛte tvaṇḍaṃ dṛṣṭvā tvaṣṭedamabravīt| naitannyūnaṃ bhavādaṇḍaṃ mārttaṇḍastvaṃ bhavānagha||
Sūta replied: “Even for a long time after it had been produced, the egg (the foetus) remained unbroken. That egg was broken by Tvaṣṭṛ. Bewildered by the destruction of the egg (foetus) as he mistook it, Kaśyapa fled from there.

na khalvayaṃ mṛtoṃ'ḍastha iti snehātpitābravīt| tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā nāmānvarthamudāharan||
Sūta replied: “Even for a long time after it had been produced, the egg (the foetus) remained unbroken. That egg was broken by Tvaṣṭṛ. Bewildered by the destruction of the egg (foetus) as he mistook it, Kaśyapa fled from there.

यन्मार्त्तण्डो भवेत्युक्तस्त्वण्डात्सोंडे द्विधाकृते। तस्माद्विवस्वान्मार्त्तण्डः पुराणज्ञैर्विभाव्यते।।
yanmārttaṇḍo bhavetyuktastvaṇḍātsoṃḍe dvidhākṛte| tasmādvivasvānmārttaṇḍaḥ purāṇajñairvibhāvyate||
Sūta replied: When the egg was split into two, he was told—“Be Mārtaṇḍa” even as he was within the egg. So the sun is considered Mārtaṇḍa by those conversant with the Purāṇas.

ततः प्रजाः प्रवक्ष्यामि मार्त्तण्डस्य विवस्वतः। विजज्ञे सवितुर्भार्या संज्ञा पुत्रांस्तु त्रीन्पुनः।।
tataḥ prajāḥ pravakṣyāmi mārttaṇḍasya vivasvataḥ| vijajñe saviturbhāryā saṃjñā putrāṃstu trīnpunaḥ||
Sūta replied: Henceforth, I shall mention the progeny of Vivasvān known as Mārtaṇḍa. Saṃjñā, the wife of Savitṛ, gave birth to three sons (children) viz. Manu, Yamī and Yama. Chāyā (the shadow) gave birth to Tapatī and Śanaiścara (the Planet Saturn). These are remembered as the sons of Mārtaṇḍa.

मनुं यमीं यमं चैव छाया सा तपती तथा। शनैश्चरं तथैवैते मार्त्तण्डस्यात्मजाः स्मृताः।।
manuṃ yamīṃ yamaṃ caiva chāyā sā tapatī tathā| śanaiścaraṃ tathaivaite mārttaṇḍasyātmajāḥ smṛtāḥ||
Sūta replied: Henceforth, I shall mention the progeny of Vivasvān known as Mārtaṇḍa. Saṃjñā, the wife of Savitṛ, gave birth to three sons (children) viz. Manu, Yamī and Yama. Chāyā (the shadow) gave birth to Tapatī and Śanaiścara (the Planet Saturn). These are remembered as the sons of Mārtaṇḍa.

विवस्वान्कश्यपाज्जज्ञे दाक्षायिण्यां महायशाः। तस्य संज्ञाभवद्भार्या त्वाष्ट्री देवी विवस्वतः।।
vivasvānkaśyapājjajñe dākṣāyiṇyāṃ mahāyaśāḥ| tasya saṃjñābhavadbhāryā tvāṣṭrī devī vivasvataḥ||
Sūta replied: Vivasvān (the sun-god) of great fame was born of Dākṣāyaṇī (i.e. daughter of Dakṣa) and Kaśyapa.

सुरेणुरिति विख्याता पुनः संज्ञेति विश्रुता। सा तु भार्या भगवतो मार्त्तण्डस्यातितेजसः।।
sureṇuriti vikhyātā punaḥ saṃjñeti viśrutā| sā tu bhāryā bhagavato mārttaṇḍasyātitejasaḥ||
Sūta replied: Vivasvān (the sun-god) of great fame was born of Dākṣāyaṇī (i.e. daughter of Dakṣa) and Kaśyapa.

न खल्वये मृतो ह्यण्डे इति स्नेहात्तमब्रवीत। अजानन्कश्यपः स्नेहात मार्त्तण्ड इति चोच्यते।।
na khalvaye mṛto hyaṇḍe iti snehāttamabravīt| ajānankaśyapaḥ snehāt mārttaṇḍa iti cocyate||
Sūta replied: “Indeed, he did not die inside the egg” said Kaśyapa fondly but unwittingly. Hence the sun is called Mārtaṇḍa.

तेजस्त्वभ्यधिकं तस्य नित्यमेव विवस्वतः। येनापि तापयामास त्रील्लोङ्कान्कश्यपात्मजः।।
tejastvabhyadhikaṃ tasya nityameva vivasvataḥ| yenāpi tāpayāmāsa trīlloṅkānkaśyapātmajaḥ||
Sūta replied: The brilliance and splendour of Vivasvān is always very excessive. It is with that, that the son of Kaśyapa scorched the three worlds.

Sūta replied: Ravi, the sun god, begot of Saṃjñā three children, two sons of great power and vigour and one daughter. It is known Manu was the eldest of the sons of Sun-god. Thereafter (was born) Yama (otherwise known as) Śrāddhadeva. Manu was a Prajāpati. Then Yama and Yamī were born as twins.

Sūta replied: On seeing that form of unbearable splendour of Vivasvān Saṃjñā could not brook it. She created her own Chāyā (shadow) of the same colour and complexion (Savarṇā) as hers.

Sūta replied: That lady of great fortune, born out of her shadow, joined her palms in great reverence and purity of mind and spoke to Saṃjñā.

Sūta replied: Saṃjñā of earthly nature (i.e. the shadow) loved her own sons more than the elder sons.

Sūta replied: Manu forgave all that but Yama did not. Highly distressed at her enmity because she was a co-wife (for his mother), he began to grumble much and on many occasions. Due to his anger as well as the force of inevitable future, Yama, the son of Vivasvān, threatened Chāyā with his foot (i.e. kick).

Sūta replied: The sun then spoke to Saṃjñā (i.e. to Chāyā mistaken by him to be Saṃjñā) “When all the sons are equal to us, how is it that one is loved by you more than the others.”

Sūta replied: Parrying that question, she did not mention the real situation to Vivasvān. Then he entered into meditation himself and found out the truth by means of his yogic power.

Sūta replied: The lord became angry and wished to curse her with utter annihilation. Then she mentioned all the facts to Vivasvān.

anujñātastatastvaṣṭrā rūpanirvarttanāya vai| tato 'bhyupāgamattvaṣṭā mārttaṇḍasya vivasvataḥ||
Sūta replied: Tvaṣṭṛ was allowed to change the form. Thereupon Tvaṣṭṛ undertook to change the form of Mārtaṇḍa Vivasvān (the sun-god).

भ्रमिमारोप्य तत्तेजः शातयामास तस्य वै। तं निर्मूलित तेजस्कं तेजसापहृतेन तु।।
bhramimāropya tattejaḥ śātayāmāsa tasya vai| taṃ nirmūlita tejaskaṃ tejasāpahṛtena tu||
Sūta replied: He placed him on the (circular moving) wheel (i.e. a lathe) and pruned (the slices of the irregular superfluous part of) his brilliance—when his refulgence was taken away, the sun had his brilliance uprooted (i.e. reduced).

कान्तां प्रभाकरो द्रष्टुमियेष शुभदर्शनः। ददर्श योगमास्थाय स्वां भार्यां वडवां तथा।।
kāntāṃ prabhākaro draṣṭumiyeṣa śubhadarśanaḥ| dadarśa yogamāsthāya svāṃ bhāryāṃ vaḍavāṃ tathā||
Sūta replied: Prabhākara (the sun) of splendid appearance wished to see his wife. By resorting to his yogic power, he saw his wife in the form of a mare.

अदृश्यां सर्वभूतानां तेजसा नियमेन च। अश्वरूपेण मार्त्तण्डस्तां मुखे समभावयत।।
adṛśyāṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ tejasā niyamena ca| aśvarūpeṇa mārttaṇḍastāṃ mukhe samabhāvayat||
Sūta replied: Though she was invisible to all living beings on account of her holy observance, and brilliance he saw her by means of his yogic power. In the form of a horse, Mārtaṇḍa had sexual intercourse with her through the mouth.
