इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे मध्यमभागे तृतीये उपोद्धातपादे भार्गवं प्रति वरुणागमनं नाम सप्तपञ्चशत्तमो ऽध्यायः।। 57।। एवं ब्रुवाणं वरुणं विलोक्य पतितं भुवि। संजहार पुनर्धीमानस्त्रं मृगुकुलोद्वहः।।
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe madhyamabhāge tṛtīye upoddhātapāde bhārgavaṃ prati varuṇāgamanaṃ nāma saptapañcaśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 57|| evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ varuṇaṃ vilokya patitaṃ bhuvi| saṃjahāra punardhīmānastraṃ mṛgukulodvahaḥ||
Jaimini continued: On seeing Varuṇa who said this and fell on the ground at his feet, the intelligent leading member of the family of Bhṛgu, withdrew the missile.

संत्दृतास्त्रस्ततो रामो वरुणं पुरतः स्थिरम। विलोक्य बिगतक्रोधस्तमुवाच हसन्निव।।
saṃtdṛtāstrastato rāmo varuṇaṃ purataḥ sthiram| vilokya bigatakrodhastamuvāca hasanniva||
Jaimini continued: After withdrawing the missile, Rāma looked at Varuṇa standing in front of him. Anger having subsided, he said to him smilingly.

Jaimini continued: “These leading sages who had their homes in Gokarṇa had come to me before, O lord of rivers, while I was staying on the mountain Mahendra.

tvattoye medinīṃ pūrvaṃ khanadbhiḥ sagarātmajaiḥ| adho nipātitaṃ kṣetraṃ gokarṇamṛṣisevitam||
Jaimini continued: The holy spot Gokarṇa inhabited by the sages was caused to fail down into your waters formerly, by the sons of Sagara who were digging the Earth.

उपलब्धुमिमे भूयः क्षेत्रं तद्भववल्लभम। अधावन्मामुपागम्य मुनयस्तीर्थवासिनः।।
upalabdhumime bhūyaḥ kṣetraṃ tadbhavavallabham| adhāvanmāmupāgamya munayastīrthavāsinaḥ||
Jaimini continued: After having approached me, those sages, the residents of that holy place have rushed down here to regain once again that holy spot which is very dear to Śiva.

eṣāmarthe tataḥ so 'haṃ mahendrādacalottamāt| bhavantamāgato draṣṭuṃ sahaibhirmunipuṅgavaiḥ||
Jaimini continued: It was for the sake of these sages that I have come down from the excellent mountain Mahendra along with these leading sages, to see you.

तस्मान्मदर्थे सलिलं समुत्सार्यात्मनो भवान। दातुमर्हति तत्क्षेत्रमेषां तोये च पूर्ववत।।
tasmānmadarthe salilaṃ samutsāryātmano bhavān| dātumarhati tatkṣetrameṣāṃ toye ca pūrvavat||
Jaimini continued: Hence, for my sake, it behoves you to make your waters recede and restore to them that holy spot in the water as before.”

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā varuṇo yādasāṃ patiḥ| nirūpya manasā rāmamida bhūyo 'bravīdvacaḥ||
Jaimini said: On hearing these words of Rāma, Varuṇa the lord of aquatic beings considered everything in his mind and spoke these words to Rāma once again.

न शक्यमुत्सारयितुं मदंभः केनचिद्भवेत। तथा हि मे वरो दत्तः पुरानेन विरिञ्चिना।।
na śakyamutsārayituṃ madaṃbhaḥ kenacidbhavet| tathā hi me varo dattaḥ purānena viriñcinā||
Varuṇa said: “My waters cannot be made to recede by anyone. Such is the boon granted to me formerly by Viriñci (i.e. god Brahmā).

सो ऽहं त्वत्तेजसेदारीं विहाय सहजां धृतिम। कातरं समुपायातो वशतां तव भार्गव।।
so 'haṃ tvattejasedārīṃ vihāya sahajāṃ dhṛtim| kātaraṃ samupāyāto vaśatāṃ tava bhārgava||
Varuṇa said: But on account of your brilliant splendour I have given up all my natural courage. I have become afraid, o Bhārgava, and have fallen under your control.

एषामर्थे विशेषण भवता परिचोदितः। कथं न कुर्यां कर्मेदमहं क्षत्त्रकुलान्तक।।
eṣāmarthe viśeṣaṇa bhavatā paricoditaḥ| kathaṃ na kuryāṃ karmedamahaṃ kṣattrakulāntaka||
Varuṇa said: How can I fail to perform this task, O annihilator of the families of Kṣatriyas, after having been especially urged by you for the sake of these sages?

तस्माद्यावत्प्रमाणं मे भवान्संकल्पयिष्यति। तावत्संघारयिष्यामि भूमौ सलिलमात्मनः।।
tasmādyāvatpramāṇaṃ me bhavānsaṃkalpayiṣyati| tāvatsaṃghārayiṣyāmi bhūmau salilamātmanaḥ||
Varuṇa said: Hence, I shall hold back on the ground as much of my water as you may have intended in your mind.”

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tathetyuktvā sa sāyakam| yathāgataṃ pracikṣepa dhanurnirbhidya bhārgavaḥ||
Varuṇa said: On hearing his words, Bhārgava said “so be it”. He broke his bow and threw away his arrow.

ततो निरूप्य सीमानं दर्शयानो महीपते। स्रुवं जग्राह मतिमान्क्षप्तुकामो जलाशये।।
tato nirūpya sīmānaṃ darśayāno mahīpate| sruvaṃ jagrāha matimānkṣaptukāmo jalāśaye||
Varuṇa said: Then he mentally decided the boundary. Wishing to point it out, O king, he took up his Sruvā (the sacrificial ladle). The intelligent sage was desirous of throwing it in the ocean.

प्रसन्नचेतसं रामं गतरोषमथात्मनि। अन्तर्हिते सरिन्नाथे रामः सुवमुदङ्मुखः।।
prasannacetasaṃ rāmaṃ gataroṣamathātmani| antarhite sarinnāthe rāmaḥ suvamudaṅmukhaḥ||
Varuṇa said: After making him (Rāma) delighted in his mind and devoid of anger towards himself (i.e. Varuṇa), the lord of rivers disappeared. When he had gone, Rāma stood facing the north. He whirled his Sruvā with great speed and hurled it into the briny sea. When it was hurled into the ocean, the Sruvā went two hundred Yojanas in the direction of the north-west, O king, and fell down. That place is the holy spot named Śūrpāraka (Sopārā, in Dist. Thana, Maharashtra). It is conducive to rid oneself of all sins. It is on the shore of the lord of rivers and well-known in the three worlds. The Sruvā (sacrificial ladle) slipping down from Rāma’s hands fell, O great king between that holy spot (and the shore of the ocean), thereby indicating Rāma’s exploit.

भ्रामयित्वातिवेगेन चिक्षेप लवणार्णवे। क्षिप्तत्वेन समुद्रे तु दिशमुत्तरपश्चिमाम।।
bhrāmayitvātivegena cikṣepa lavaṇārṇave| kṣiptatvena samudre tu diśamuttarapaścimām||
Varuṇa said: After making him (Rāma) delighted in his mind and devoid of anger towards himself (i.e. Varuṇa), the lord of rivers disappeared. When he had gone, Rāma stood facing the north. He whirled his Sruvā with great speed and hurled it into the briny sea. Varuṇa said: The place, O king, where the ground created by Rāma was established is the holy place Śūrpāraka, glorious and renowned in all the worlds. The ocean withdrew its waters so far. After granting the Earth to Rāma, O king, he stood aside.

atiṣṭhadapasṛtyorvīṃ dattvā rāmāya pārthiva| anatikrāntamaryādo yathākālaṃ bhṛgūdvahaḥ||
Varuṇa said: The place, O king, where the ground created by Rāma was established is the holy place Śūrpāraka, glorious and renowned in all the worlds. The ocean withdrew its waters so far. After granting the Earth to Rāma, O king, he stood aside.

व्यस्मयन्त सुराः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा रामस्य विक्रमम। नगरग्रमसीमानः किञ्चित्किञ्चित्क्वचित्क्वचित।।
vyasmayanta surāḥ sarve dṛṣṭvā rāmasya vikramam| nagaragramasīmānaḥ kiñcitkiñcitkvacitkvacit||
Varuṇa said: All the gods were surprised to see the exploit of Rāma. (Defective Text) When the water of the ocean receded there on the Sahya mountain, there were here and there (at some places) some markings of boundaries of towns and villages as before (their submerging in the sea). These he observed there by chance, due to their lower level. Thereafter, the most excellent member of the family of Bhṛgu, lovingly gave their respective places as desired by them to the sages of purified souls.

Varuṇa said: All the gods were surprised to see the exploit of Rāma. tataste munayaḥ sarve harṣeṇa mahātānvitāḥ| kṛtakṛtyā bhṛśaṃ rāmamāśiṣā samapūjayan||
Varuṇa said: Then all those sages became delighted very much. Fully contented, they worshipped Rāma and expressed their good wishes for him.

Varuṇa said: Then, being permitted by them, Rāma who accomplished for them all desires, went away.

Varuṇa said: Then, being permitted by them, Rāma who accomplished for them all desires, went away.

Varuṇa said: Then, being permitted by them, Rāma who accomplished for them all desires, went away.

कातमब्धौ निपतितं नष्टतोयं चिरोषितम। अपि रुद्रप्रभावेम प्रायान्नात्यन्तविप्लवम।।
kātamabdhau nipatitaṃ naṣṭatoyaṃ ciroṣitam| api rudraprabhāvema prāyānnātyantaviplavam||
Varuṇa said: Then, being permitted by them, Rāma who accomplished for them all desires, went away.

तत्तेयनिःसृतं क्षेत्रमभूत्पूर्ववदेव हि। एतद्धि देवसामर्थ्यमचिन्त्यं नृपसत्तम।।
tatteyaniḥsṛtaṃ kṣetramabhūtpūrvavadeva hi| etaddhi devasāmarthyamacintyaṃ nṛpasattama||
Varuṇa said: The holy spot emerging from the waters regained its original state, O excellent king. This is the capacity of lord Śiva which cannot be adequately thought of.

एवं रामेण जलधेः पुनः सृष्टा वसुंधरा। दक्षिणोत्तरतो राजनयोजनानां चतुःशतम।।
evaṃ rāmeṇa jaladheḥ punaḥ sṛṣṭā vasuṃdharā| dakṣiṇottarato rājanayojanānāṃ catuḥśatam||
Varuṇa said: Thus the Earth was reclaimed (lit. created) once again out of the ocean. From the south to the north, O king, it extends to four hundred Yojanas.

नातिक्रामति सो ऽद्यापि सीमानं पयसां निधिः। कृतं रामेण महता न तु सज्जं महद्धनुः।।
nātikrāmati so 'dyāpi sīmānaṃ payasāṃ nidhiḥ| kṛtaṃ rāmeṇa mahatā na tu sajjaṃ mahaddhanuḥ||
Varuṇa said: Even today the ocean does not transgress the boundary. His great bow was never drawn and kept ready by Rāma the great sage.

एवं प्रभावो रामो ऽसौ सगरश्च महीपतिः। यस्य पुत्रैरयं खण्डो भारतो ऽब्धौ निपतितः।।
evaṃ prabhāvo rāmo 'sau sagaraśca mahīpatiḥ| yasya putrairayaṃ khaṇḍo bhārato 'bdhau nipatitaḥ||
Varuṇa said: Such is the potential power of Rāma and the king Sagara whose sons caused the sub-continent of Bharata to fall into the ocean extending it more by a thousand Yojanas and developed the great ocean. The land extending to six hundred Yojanas was created once again.

योजनानां सहस्रन्तु वर्द्धितश्च महोदधिः। रामेणाभूत्पुनः सृष्टं योजनानां तु षट्शतम।।

Varuṇa said: Such is the potential power of Rāma and the king Sagara whose sons caused the sub-continent of Bharata to fall into the ocean extending it more by a thousand Yojanas and developed the great ocean. The land extending to six hundred Yojanas was created once again.
