zrIkRSNa uvAca ॥ jJAne kriyAyAM caryAyAM sAramuddhRtya saMgrahAt ॥ uktaM bhagavatA sarvaM zrutaM zrutisamaM mayA ॥ 1 ॥
Sri Kṛṣṇa said:— Everything mentioned succinctly by your holiness with regard to knowledge, rites and activities, after taking out the essence, has been heard by me. It is as sacred as the Vedas.

idAnIM zrotumicchAmi yogaM paramadurlabham ॥ sAdhikAraM ca sAMgaM ca savidhiM saprayojanam ॥ 2 ॥
Now I wish to hear about Yoga which is very difficult to achieve along with its authorisation, ancillaries, injunctions and purpose.

यद्यस्ति मरणं पूर्वं योगाद्यनुपमर्दतः ॥ सद्यः साधयितुं शक्यं येन स्यान्नात्महा नरः ॥ ३ ॥
yadyasti maraNaM pUrvaM yogAdyanupamardataH ॥ sadyaH sAdhayituM zakyaM yena syAnnAtmahA naraH ॥ 3 ॥
If there is death in the past, it is crushed by yoga and other practices. It can be accomplished immediately so that a man does not commit suicide.

tacca tatkAraNaM caiva tatkAlakaraNAni ca ॥ tadbhedatAratamyaM ca vaktumarhasi tattvataH ॥ 4 ॥
That is the cause of the universe and the causes of the universe at that time. You should tell me in detail the differences and differences between them.

upamanyuruvAca ॥ sthAne pRSTaM tvayA kRSNa sarvapraznArthavedinA ॥ tataH krameNa tatsarvaM vakSye zRNu samAhitaH ॥ 5 ॥
Upamanyu said:— O Kṛṣṇa, the question has been pertinently put by you who understand the meaning of all questions. Hence I shall mention everything in order. Listen attentively.

निरुद्धवृत्त्यंतरस्यं शिवे चित्तस्य निश्चला ॥ या वृत्तिः स समासेन योगः स खलु पञ्चधा ॥ ६ ॥
niruddhavRttyaMtarasyaM zive cittasya nizcalA ॥ yA vRttiH sa samAsena yogaH sa khalu paJcadhA ॥ 6 ॥
The mind is fixed on Lord Śiva, whose activities are restrained. That which is called yoga in summary is indeed fivefold.

मंत्रयोगःस्पर्शयोगो भावयोगस्तथापरः ॥ अभावयोगस्सर्वेभ्यो महायोगः परो मतः ॥ ७ ॥
maMtrayogaHsparzayogo bhAvayogastathAparaH ॥ abhAvayogassarvebhyo mahAyogaH paro mataH ॥ 7 ॥
The yoga of mantras, the yoga of touch and the yoga of emotions are also others. The yoga of absence is considered to be the greatest of all yogas.

मंत्राभ्यासवशेनैव मंत्रवाच्यार्थगोचरः ॥ अव्याक्षेपा मनोवृत्तिर्मंत्रयोग उदाहृतः ॥ ८ ॥
maMtrAbhyAsavazenaiva maMtravAcyArthagocaraH ॥ avyAkSepA manovRttirmaMtrayoga udAhRtaH ॥ 8 ॥
The concentration of the mind without disturbances, on the expressed meaning of the mantra along with the practice of the mantra is mantrayoga.

प्राणायाममुखा सैव स्पर्शे योगोभिधीयते ॥ स मंत्रस्पर्शनिर्मुक्तो भावयोगः प्रकीर्तितः ॥ ९ ॥
prANAyAmamukhA saiva sparze yogobhidhIyate ॥ sa maMtrasparzanirmukto bhAvayogaH prakIrtitaH ॥ 9 ॥
Coupled with Prāṇāyāma the same is called sparśayoga. Without the contact of Mantra, it is Bhāvayoga.

विलीनावयवं विश्वं रूपं संभाव्यते यतः ॥ अभावयोगः संप्रोक्तो ऽनाभासाद्वस्तुनः सतः ॥ १० ॥
vilInAvayavaM vizvaM rUpaM saMbhAvyate yataH ॥ abhAvayogaH saMprokto 'nAbhAsAdvastunaH sataH ॥ 10 ॥
Wherein the universe with all its parts is meditated upon it is called Abhāvayoga since in that the existent object is not seen.

शिवस्वभाव एवैकश्चिंत्यते निरुपाधिकः ॥ यथा शैवमनोवृत्तिर्महायोग इहोच्यते ॥ ११ ॥
zivasvabhAva evaikazciMtyate nirupAdhikaH ॥ yathA zaivamanovRttirmahAyoga ihocyate ॥ 11 ॥
Wherein the nature of Śiva is contemplated without any conditioning or restricting factor, the concentration of the mind on Śiva is called Mahāyoga.

दृष्टे तथानुश्रविके विरक्तं विषये मनः ॥ यस्य तस्याधिकारोस्ति योगे नान्यस्य कस्यचित् ॥ १२ ॥
dRSTe tathAnuzravike viraktaM viSaye manaH ॥ yasya tasyAdhikArosti yoge nAnyasya kasyacit ॥ 12 ॥
In this Yoga only he is authorised whose mind is detached from the perceived and Veda-ordained objects of pleasure.

विषयद्वयदोषाणां गुणानामीश्वरस्य च ॥ दर्शनादेव सततं विरक्तं जायते मनः ॥ १३ ॥
viSayadvayadoSANAM guNAnAmIzvarasya ca ॥ darzanAdeva satataM viraktaM jAyate manaH ॥ 13 ॥
The mind is detached only on perceiving the defects in the objects and in the attributes of the lord, perpetually.

अष्टांगो वा षडंगो वा सर्वयोगः समासतः ॥ यमश्च नियमश्चैव स्वस्तिकाद्यं तथासनम् ॥ १४ ॥
aSTAMgo vA SaDaMgo vA sarvayogaH samAsataH ॥ yamazca niyamazcaiva svastikAdyaM tathAsanam ॥ 14 ॥
The eightfold or sixfold yoga is the sum total of all yogas. Yama and Niyama are the seats beginning with the swastika.

प्राणायामः प्रत्याहारो धारणा ध्यानमेव च ॥ समाधिरिति योगांगान्यष्टावुक्तानि सूरिभिः ॥ १५ ॥
prANAyAmaH pratyAhAro dhAraNA dhyAnameva ca ॥ samAdhiriti yogAMgAnyaSTAvuktAni sUribhiH ॥ 15 ॥
Pranayama, pratyahara, dharana and meditation are also performed. The sages have described the eight limbs of yoga as samadhi.

आसनं प्राणसंरोधः प्रत्याहारोथ धारणा ॥ ध्यानं समाधिर्योगस्य षडंगानि समासतः ॥ १६ ॥
AsanaM prANasaMrodhaH pratyAhArotha dhAraNA ॥ dhyAnaM samAdhiryogasya SaDaMgAni samAsataH ॥ 16 ॥
The six Aṅgas are in brief Āsana, Prāṇasaṃrodha, Pratyāhāra, Dhāraṇā, Dhyāna and Samādhi.

पृथग्लक्षणमेतेषां शिवशास्त्रे समीरितम् ॥ शिवागमेषु चान्येषु विशेषात्कामिकादिषु ॥ १७ ॥
pRthaglakSaNameteSAM zivazAstre samIritam ॥ zivAgameSu cAnyeSu vizeSAtkAmikAdiSu ॥ 17 ॥
The distinct characteristics of these are described in the scriptures of Lord Śiva. and on other occasions, especially in the case of Kamika and others.

योगशास्त्रेष्वपि तथा पुराणेष्वपि केषु च ॥ अहिंसा सत्यमस्तेयं ब्रह्मचर्यापरिग्रहः ॥ यम इत्युच्यते सद्भिः पञ्चावयवयोगतः ॥ १८ ॥
yogazAstreSvapi tathA purANeSvapi keSu ca ॥ ahiMsA satyamasteyaM brahmacaryAparigrahaH ॥ yama ityucyate sadbhiH paJcAvayavayogataH ॥ 18 ॥
They are also mentioned in the scriptures of yoga and in the Purāṇas. Nonviolence truthfulness stealing celibacy and marriage It is called Yama by the sages because of the combination of the five elements.

शौचं तुष्टिस्तपश्चैव जपः प्रणिधिरेव च ॥ इति पञ्चप्रभेदस्स्यान्नियमः स्वांशभेदतः ॥ १९ ॥
zaucaM tuSTistapazcaiva japaH praNidhireva ca ॥ iti paJcaprabhedassyAnniyamaH svAMzabhedataH ॥ 19 ॥
Niyama is the positive curb or restraint with the following five subdivisions—purity, contentment, penance, japa and attentiveness.

स्वस्तिकं पद्ममध्येंदुं वीरं योगं प्रसाधितम् ॥ पर्यंकं च यथेष्टं च प्रोक्तमासनमष्टधा ॥ २० ॥
svastikaM padmamadhyeMduM vIraM yogaM prasAdhitam ॥ paryaMkaM ca yatheSTaM ca proktamAsanamaSTadhA ॥ 20 ॥
Āsana is the Yogic pose and is of eight types such as Svastika, Padma, Ardhendu, Vīra, Yoga, Prasādhita, Paryaṅka and Yatheṣṭa.

प्राणः स्वदेहजो वायुस्तस्यायामो निरोधनम् ॥ तद्रोचकं पूरकं च कुंभकं च त्रिधोच्यते ॥ २१ ॥
prANaH svadehajo vAyustasyAyAmo nirodhanam ॥ tadrocakaM pUrakaM ca kuMbhakaM ca tridhocyate ॥ 21 ॥
Prāṇa is the vital breath in the body. Āyāma is checking. Hence Prāṇāyāma means checking or restraining the breath. It is of three forms—Recaka, Pūraka and Kumbhaka.

नासिकापुटमंगुल्या पीड्यैकमपरेण तु ॥ औदरं रेचयेद्वायुं तथायं रेचकः स्मृतः ॥ २२ ॥
nAsikApuTamaMgulyA pIDyaikamapareNa tu ॥ audaraM recayedvAyuM tathAyaM recakaH smRtaH ॥ 22 ॥
One of the nostrils is pressed with the finger and the air from the belly is let out through the other. This is Recaka (Exhaling).

बाह्येन मरुता देहं दृतिवत्परिपूरयेत् ॥ नासापुटेनापरेण पूरणात्पूरकं मतम् ॥ २३ ॥
bAhyena marutA dehaM dRtivatparipUrayet ॥ nAsApuTenApareNa pUraNAtpUrakaM matam ॥ 23 ॥
Then through the other nostril the external air is inhaled and the body is filled up like the bellows. It is Pūraka (Inhaling).

न मुंचति न गृह्णाति वायुमंतर्बहिः स्थितम् ॥ संपूर्णं कुंभवत्तिष्ठेदचलः स तु कुंभक ॥ २४ ॥
na muMcati na gRhNAti vAyumaMtarbahiH sthitam ॥ saMpUrNaM kuMbhavattiSThedacalaH sa tu kuMbhaka ॥ 24 ॥
He does not breathe out the internal or breathe in the external air. He remains steady like the fìlled-up jar. It is called Kumbhaka (Retention).

रेचकाद्यं त्रयमिदं न द्रुतं न विलंबितम् ॥ तद्यतः क्रमयोगेन त्वभ्यसेद्योगसाधकः ॥ २५ ॥
recakAdyaM trayamidaM na drutaM na vilaMbitam ॥ tadyataH kramayogena tvabhyasedyogasAdhakaH ॥ 25 ॥
The three, Recaka etc. shall not be done hurriedly or slowly. The practiser of Yoga shall adopt them gradually with restraint.

रेचकादिषु योभ्यासो नाडीशोधनपूर्वकः ॥ स्वेच्छोत्क्रमणपर्यंतः प्रोक्तो योगानुशासने ॥ २६ ॥
recakAdiSu yobhyAso nADIzodhanapUrvakaH ॥ svecchotkramaNaparyaMtaH prokto yogAnuzAsane ॥ 26 ॥
The practice of Recaka shall begin with the purification of the veins and conclude with its voluntary exit as mentioned in the Yogānuśāsana.

कन्यकादिक्रमवशात्प्राणायामनिरोधनम् ॥ तच्चतुर्धोपदिष्टं स्यान्मात्रागुणविभागतः ॥ २७ ॥
kanyakAdikramavazAtprANAyAmanirodhanam ॥ taccaturdhopadiSTaM syAnmAtrAguNavibhAgataH ॥ 27 ॥
Prāṇāyāma is one of the four varieties in view of the time-units, Kanyaka etc.

कन्यकस्तु चतुर्धा स्यात्स च द्वादशमात्रकः ॥ मध्यमस्तु द्विरुद्धातश्चतुर्विंशतिमात्रकः ॥ २८ ॥
kanyakastu caturdhA syAtsa ca dvAdazamAtrakaH ॥ madhyamastu dviruddhAtazcaturviMzatimAtrakaH ॥ 28 ॥
Kanyaka is without Udghāta (strokes). Its duration is twelve Mātrās. Madhyama has two strokes, its duration is twenty-four Mātrās.

उत्तमस्तु त्रिरुद्धातः षड्विंशन्मात्रकः परः ॥ स्वेदकंपादिजनकः प्राणायामस्तदुत्तरः ॥ २९ ॥
uttamastu triruddhAtaH SaDviMzanmAtrakaH paraH ॥ svedakaMpAdijanakaH prANAyAmastaduttaraH ॥ 29 ॥
Uttama has three strokes and its duration is thirty-six Mātrās. Uttara is the Prāṇāyāma that causes perspiration and trembling of the body.

आनंदोद्भवरोमांचनेत्राश्रूणां विमोचनम् ॥ जल्पभ्रमणमूर्छाद्यं जायते योगिनः परम् ॥ ३० ॥
AnaMdodbhavaromAMcanetrAzrUNAM vimocanam ॥ jalpabhramaNamUrchAdyaM jAyate yoginaH param ॥ 30 ॥
The yogin has experiences—the thrill of bliss, horripilation and shedding of tears. He may prattle. There may be vertigo and senselessness.

जानुं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य न द्रुतं न विलंबितम् ॥ अंगुलीस्फोटनं कुर्यात्सा मात्रेति प्रकीर्तिता ॥ ३१ ॥
jAnuM pradakSiNIkRtya na drutaM na vilaMbitam ॥ aMgulIsphoTanaM kuryAtsA mAtreti prakIrtitA ॥ 31 ॥
Mātrā is the unit of time required for the snapping of the fingers after moving them round the knees neither speedily nor slowly.

मात्राक्रमेण विज्ञेयाश्चोद्वातक्रमयोगतः ॥ नाडीविशुद्धिपूर्वं तु प्राणायामं समाचरेत् ॥ ३२ ॥
mAtrAkrameNa vijJeyAzcodvAtakramayogataH ॥ nADIvizuddhipUrvaM tu prANAyAmaM samAcaret ॥ 32 ॥
The duration of Prāṇāyāma shall be increased in accordance with the Mātrās and strokes. The veins shall be necessarily purified.

अगर्भश्च सगर्भश्च प्राणायामो द्विधा स्मृतः ॥ जपं ध्यानं विनागर्भः सगर्भस्तत्समन्वयात् ॥ ३३ ॥
agarbhazca sagarbhazca prANAyAmo dvidhA smRtaH ॥ japaM dhyAnaM vinAgarbhaH sagarbhastatsamanvayAt ॥ 33 ॥
The Prāṇāyāma is again twofold: Agarbha and Sagarbha. Restraining the breath without meditation and Japa is called Agarbha Prāṇāyāma. If they too are included it is called Sagarbha.

अगर्भाद्गर्भसंयुक्तः प्राणायामःशताधिकः ॥ तस्मात्सगर्भं कुर्वन्ति योगिनः प्राणसंयमम् ॥ ३४ ॥
agarbhAdgarbhasaMyuktaH prANAyAmaHzatAdhikaH ॥ tasmAtsagarbhaM kurvanti yoginaH prANasaMyamam ॥ 34 ॥
The Sagarbha Prāṇāyāma is hundred times more efficacious than the Agarbha. Yogins practise Sagarbha Prāṇāyāma.

प्राणस्य विजयादेव जीयंते देह १ आयवः ॥ प्राणो ऽपानः समानश्च ह्युदानो व्यान एव च ॥ ३५ ॥
prANasya vijayAdeva jIyaMte deha 1 AyavaH ॥ prANo 'pAnaH samAnazca hyudAno vyAna eva ca ॥ 35 ॥
By the victory of the life-force the body 1 and the living entities live. The prana, the apana, the samana, the hyudana and the vyana are the same.

नागः कूर्मश्च कृकलो देवदत्तो धनंजयः ॥ प्रयाणं कुरुते यस्मात्तस्मात्प्राणो ऽभिधीयते ॥ ३६ ॥
nAgaH kUrmazca kRkalo devadatto dhanaMjayaH ॥ prayANaM kurute yasmAttasmAtprANo 'bhidhIyate ॥ 36 ॥
The serpent the tortoise the lizard Devadatta and Arjuna The life-force is called the life-force from which it moves.

अवाङ्नयत्यपानाख्यो यदाहारादि भुज्यते ॥ व्यानो व्यानशयत्यंगान्यशेषाणि विवर्धयन् ॥ ३७ ॥
avAGnayatyapAnAkhyo yadAhArAdi bhujyate ॥ vyAno vyAnazayatyaMgAnyazeSANi vivardhayan ॥ 37 ॥
Apāna is the vital air that takes the food lower down. Vyāna is diffused through the limbs and it develops them.

उद्वेजयति मर्माणीत्युदानो वायुरीरितः ॥ समं नयति सर्वांगं समानस्तेन गीयते ॥ ३८ ॥
udvejayati marmANItyudAno vAyurIritaH ॥ samaM nayati sarvAMgaM samAnastena gIyate ॥ 38 ॥
Udāna is the vital air that affects the vulnerable points in the body among the limbs. The vital air that spreads equally is called Samāna.

उद्गारे नाग आख्यातः कूर्म उन्मीलने स्थितः ॥ कृकलः क्षवथौ ज्ञेयो देवदत्तो विजृंभणे ॥ ३९ ॥
udgAre nAga AkhyAtaH kUrma unmIlane sthitaH ॥ kRkalaH kSavathau jJeyo devadatto vijRMbhaNe ॥ 39 ॥
The vital air Nāga is for the activity of belching. Kūrma is for the activity of dosing the eyes; the vital air Kṛkara is the activity of sneezing and the vital air Devadatta is the activity of yawning.

na jahAti mRtaM cApi sarvavyApI dhanaMjayaH ॥ krameNAbhyasyamAnoyaM prANAyAmapramANavAn ॥ 40 ॥
Dhanañjaya is the vital air that circulates through the body. It does not leave off even the dead body. Gradually practised, Prāṇāyāma is very efficacious.

Lord Śiva alone is the place of worship, and there are no other three evils. Time has killed the glass and the mind has been fixed in place.

But it does not disappear from the objective, nor can it be perceived otherwise. The first stability of the mind is produced by meditation.

Therefore, by the practice of meditation, one should make the mind calm. In the meditation of the mind the metal is remembered and the thought of Lord Shiva is repeatedly mentioned.

The flow freed from the interference of belief is called meditation. Leaving aside everything else, Shiva is the Shivankara.

The supreme object of meditation is the Lord of the demigods, the complete Atharva Veda. Similarly Shiva is the supreme meditation and Shiva is the source of all beings.

Both of them are heard from the scriptures of memory and are omniscient and omniscient. They are omniscient and constantly meditated upon in their various forms.

Vimukti is the first conviction, and the first conviction is the aṇimā. This is the twofold purpose of this meditation which should be understood.

The knower of Yoga shall practise Yoga with the knowledge of four things—the meditator, the meditation, the object of meditation and the benefit of meditation.

The meditator shall be a man who is endowed with knowledge and detachment, who is faithful, patient, who is free from ego and who is always enthusiastic.

japAcchrAMtaH punardhyAyeddhyAnAcchrAMtaH punarjapet ॥ japadhyanAbhiyuktasya kSipraM yogaH prasiddhyati ॥ 59 ॥
A person who is tired of Japa shall begin meditation. A person who is tired of meditation shall begin Japa. A person who practises Japa and Dhyāna acquires Yoga quickly.

dhAraNA dvAdazAyAmA dhyAnaM dvAdazadhAraNam ॥ dhyAnadvAdazakaM yAvatsamAdhirabhidhIyate ॥ 60 ॥
Dhāraṇā extends upto the twelve-petalled lotus of the heart. Dhyāna is the fixation of the Dhāraṇā in the twelve-petalled lotus. When Dhyāna extends to the twelve-petalled lotus it is called Samādhi.

Samādhi is the final state of Yoga. Through Samādhi, the lustre of intellect begins to function.

In Samādhi, the vision is steady like the calm ocean, the form vanishes but the vision persists.

Fixing the mind in the object of meditation he shall see it steadily. The Yogin thus like the fire extinguished is absorbed in Samādhi.

na zRNoti na cAghrAti na jalpati na pazyati ॥ na ca sparzaM vijAnAti na saMkalpayate manaH ॥ 64 ॥
He neither hears nor smells nor prattles nor sees nor feels the touch. The mind docs not think.

navAbhimanyate kiMcidbadhyate na ca kASTavat ॥ evaM zive vilInAtmA samAdhistha ihocyate ॥ 65 ॥
Nor does he identify with anything external. Nor is it bound like the inanimate log of wood. A person whose Ātman has thus merged into Śiva is called Samādhistha.

Just as the lamp in a windless spot never flickers so also is the Yogin who is Samādhistha, An intelligent man shall not swerve. He shall be steady.

evamabhyasatazcAraM yogino yogamuttamam ॥ tadantarAyA nazyaMti vighnAH sarve zanaiHzanaiH ॥ 67 ॥
All his obstacles and hindrances perish gradually if the Yogin practises the excellent Yoga.
