devyuvAca ॥ vAyostu padamApnoti yogAkAzasamudbhavam ॥ tanme sarvaM samAcakSva prasannastvaM yadi prabho ॥ 1 ॥
The goddess said:— A Yogin attains the region of wind arising from the Yogic Ether. O lord, if you are delighted let me hear from you.

॥ शंकर उवाच ॥ पुरा मे सर्वमाख्यातं योगिनां हितकाम्यया ॥ कालं जिगाय यस्सम्यग्वायोर्लिंगं यथा भवेत् ॥ २ ॥
॥ zaMkara uvAca ॥ purA me sarvamAkhyAtaM yoginAM hitakAmyayA ॥ kAlaM jigAya yassamyagvAyorliMgaM yathA bhavet ॥ 2 ॥
Formerly, desirous of the welfare of Yogins I had explained everything as to how wind became a symbol for the Yogins desirous of conquering Kāla.

तेन ज्ञात्वा दिनं योगी प्राणायामपरः स्थितः ॥ स जयत्यागतं कालं मासार्द्धेनैव सुंदरि ॥ ३ ॥
tena jJAtvA dinaM yogI prANAyAmaparaH sthitaH ॥ sa jayatyAgataM kAlaM mAsArddhenaiva suMdari ॥ 3 ॥
Knowing the day through that, the Yogin stays engaged in Prāṇāyāma. O pretty woman, within half a month he conquers the Kāla that has already come upon him.

हृत्स्थो वायुस्सदा वह्नेर्दीपकस्सोऽनुपावकः ॥ स बाह्याभ्यंतरो व्यापी वायुस्सर्वगतो महान् ॥ ४ ॥
hRtstho vAyussadA vahnerdIpakasso'nupAvakaH ॥ sa bAhyAbhyaMtaro vyApI vAyussarvagato mahAn ॥ 4 ॥
The wind within the heart kindles the fire. It is favourable to the fire. It blows within and without. It is all pervasive. It is great and it spreads everywhere.

ज्ञानविज्ञानमुत्साहः सर्वं वायोः प्रवर्तते ॥ येनेह निर्जितो वायुस्तेन सर्वमिदं जगत् ॥ ५ ॥
jJAnavijJAnamutsAhaH sarvaM vAyoH pravartate ॥ yeneha nirjito vAyustena sarvamidaM jagat ॥ 5 ॥
Knowledge, perfect knowledge, zeal, everything is activised by wind. He who has conquered it has conquered the universe.

धारणायां सदा तिष्ठेज्जरामृत्युजिघांसया ॥ योगी योगरतः सम्यग्धारणाध्यानतत्परः ॥ ६ ॥
dhAraNAyAM sadA tiSThejjarAmRtyujighAMsayA ॥ yogI yogarataH samyagdhAraNAdhyAnatatparaH ॥ 6 ॥
With a desire to prevent old age and death, the Yogin engaged in the practice of Yoga, meditation and retention shall stay in the state of Dhāraṇā.

लोहकारो यथा भस्त्रामापूर्य्य मुखतो मुने ॥ साधयेद्वायुना कर्म तद्वद्योगी समभ्यसेत् ॥ ७ ॥
lohakAro yathA bhastrAmApUryya mukhato mune ॥ sAdhayedvAyunA karma tadvadyogI samabhyaset ॥ 7 ॥
O sage, the blacksmith blows air into the bellows and does his job by means of the wind. The Yogin shall also practise similarly.

देवस्सहस्रके नेत्रपादहस्तसहस्रकः ॥ ग्रंथीन्हि सर्वमावृत्य सोऽग्रे तिष्ठेद्दशांगुलम् ॥ ८ ॥
devassahasrake netrapAdahastasahasrakaH ॥ graMthInhi sarvamAvRtya so'gre tiSTheddazAMgulam ॥ 8 ॥
The lord of thousands, the lord of thousand eyes, hands and feet encompasses the universe and stands ten Aṅgulas above.

गायत्रीं शिरसा सार्द्धं जपेद्व्याहृतिपूर्विकाम् ॥ त्रिवारमायतप्राणाः प्राणायामस्स उच्यते ॥ ९॥
gAyatrIM zirasA sArddhaM japedvyAhRtipUrvikAm ॥ trivAramAyataprANAH prANAyAmassa ucyate ॥ 9॥
Holding the breath one shall repeat the Gāyatrī Mantra along with his Śiras (Oṃ) and Vyāhṛtis thrice. That is called Prāṇāyāma.

गतागता निवर्तंते चन्द्रसूर्यादयो ग्रहाः ॥ अद्यापि न निवर्तंते योगध्यानपरायणाः ॥ १० ॥
gatAgatA nivartaMte candrasUryAdayo grahAH ॥ adyApi na nivartaMte yogadhyAnaparAyaNAH ॥ 10 ॥
Planets like the sun and the moon ate evolved and dissolved. But those who are devoted to Yoga and meditation do not return still.

शतमब्दं तपस्तप्त्वा कुशाग्रापः पिबेद्द्विजः ॥ तदाप्नोति फलं देवि विप्राणां धारणैकया ॥ ११ ॥
zatamabdaM tapastaptvA kuzAgrApaH pibeddvijaH ॥ tadApnoti phalaM devi viprANAM dhAraNaikayA ॥ 11 ॥
O goddess, by a single retention of vital airs, a brahmin attains the benefit accruing to him by the penance.performed for a hundred years while sustaining himself on the water from the tips of Kuśa grass.

यो द्विजः कल्यमुत्थाय प्राणायामैकमाचरेत् ॥ सर्वं पापं निहंत्याशु ब्रह्मलोकं स गच्छति ॥ १२॥
yo dvijaH kalyamutthAya prANAyAmaikamAcaret ॥ sarvaM pApaM nihaMtyAzu brahmalokaM sa gacchati ॥ 12॥
The brahmin who gets up at daybreak and performs a Prāṇāyāma quells his sins and goes to Brahmā’s region.

योऽतंद्रितस्सदैकांते प्रणायामपरो भवेत् ॥ जरां मृत्युं विनिर्जित्य वायुगः खेचरीति सः ॥ १३ ॥
yo'taMdritassadaikAMte praNAyAmaparo bhavet ॥ jarAM mRtyuM vinirjitya vAyugaH khecarIti saH ॥ 13 ॥
Free from lethargy he who is engaged in Prāṇāyāma in an isolated place, conquers old age and death, masters the vital air and can traverse the sky.

सिद्धस्य भजते रूपं कांतिं मेधां पराक्रमम् ॥ शौर्यं वायुसमो गत्या सौख्यं श्लाघ्यं परं सुखम् ॥ १४ ॥
siddhasya bhajate rUpaM kAMtiM medhAM parAkramam ॥ zauryaM vAyusamo gatyA saukhyaM zlAghyaM paraM sukham ॥ 14 ॥
He can assume the form of a Siddha. He gets lustre, intelligence, exploits, valour, happiness and the speed of the wind.

एतत्कथितमशेषं वायोस्सिद्धिं यदाप्नुते योगी ॥ यत्तेजसोऽपि लभते तत्ते वक्ष्यामि देवेशि ॥ १५ ॥
etatkathitamazeSaM vAyossiddhiM yadApnute yogI ॥ yattejaso'pi labhate tatte vakSyAmi devezi ॥ 15 ॥
O goddess, I have thus narrated the Siddhi through the wind that the Yogin attains from fire.

स्थित्वा सुखासने स्वे शेते जनवचनहीने तु ॥ शशिरवियुतया तेजः प्रकाशयन्मध्यमे देशे ॥ १६ ॥
sthitvA sukhAsane sve zete janavacanahIne tu ॥ zaziraviyutayA tejaH prakAzayanmadhyame deze ॥ 16 ॥
The aspirant sits in the comfortable posture in a place free from noise. In the middle place he illuminates the brilliance accompanied by the lustre of the moon and the sun.

वह्निगतं भ्रूमध्ये प्रकाशते यस्त्वतंद्रितो योगी ॥ दीपहीनध्वांत पश्येन्न्यूनमसंशयं लोके ॥ १७ ॥
vahnigataM bhrUmadhye prakAzate yastvataMdrito yogI ॥ dIpahInadhvAMta pazyennyUnamasaMzayaM loke ॥ 17 ॥
The Yogin who illuminates the fire existing between the eyebrows, alertfully can see in darkness without lamps to be sure.

नेत्रे करशाखाभिः किंचित्संपीड्य यत्नतो योगी ॥ तारं पश्यन्ध्यायेन्मुहूर्तमर्द्धं तमेकभावोऽपि ॥ १८ ॥
netre karazAkhAbhiH kiMcitsaMpIDya yatnato yogI ॥ tAraM pazyandhyAyenmuhUrtamarddhaM tamekabhAvo'pi ॥ 18 ॥
The Yogin presses the eyes with the fingers a little and strives to see the star and meditate on it for a muhūrta or half that time with concentration.

ततस्तु तमसि ध्यायन्पश्यते ज्योतिरैश्वरम्॥ श्वेतं रक्तं तथा पीतं कृष्णमिन्द्रधनुष्प्रभम् ॥ १९॥
tatastu tamasi dhyAyanpazyate jyotiraizvaram॥ zvetaM raktaM tathA pItaM kRSNamindradhanuSprabham ॥ 19॥
Thereafter while meditating in darkness he sees the bright lustre of Śiva in colours white, red, yellow, black and the rainbow colour.

भुवोर्मध्ये ललाटस्थं बालार्कसमतेजसम्॥ तं विदित्वा तु कामांगी क्रीडते कामरूपधृक् ॥ २० ॥
bhuvormadhye lalATasthaM bAlArkasamatejasam॥ taM viditvA tu kAmAMgI krIDate kAmarUpadhRk ॥ 20 ॥
On seeing that brilliance on a par with the rising sun stationed in the forehead between the eyebrows, the Yogin can assume any form of body he chooses and plays about as he wishes.

कारणप्रशमावेशं परकायप्रवेशनम् ॥ अणिमादिगुणावाप्तिर्मनसा चावलोकनम्॥ २१॥
kAraNaprazamAvezaM parakAyapravezanam ॥ aNimAdiguNAvAptirmanasA cAvalokanam॥ 21॥
The insertion of cause and effect, the entry into the body of another. Attainment of the aṇimā and other qualities and observation by the mind.

दूरश्रवण विज्ञानमदृश्यं बहुरूपधृक् ॥ सतताभ्यासयोगेन खेचरत्वं प्रजायते ॥ २२ ॥
dUrazravaNa vijJAnamadRzyaM bahurUpadhRk ॥ satatAbhyAsayogena khecaratvaM prajAyate ॥ 22 ॥
He is farsighted, knowledgeable, invisible and assumes many forms. By the combination of constant practice one becomes an astronaut.

श्रुताध्ययनसंपन्ना नानाशास्त्रविशारदाः॥ ज्ञानिनोऽपि विमुह्यंते पूर्वकर्मवशानुगाः ॥ २३ ॥
zrutAdhyayanasaMpannA nAnAzAstravizAradAH॥ jJAnino'pi vimuhyaMte pUrvakarmavazAnugAH ॥ 23 ॥
Persons endowed with Vedic studies, experts in different Śāstras and the perfectly wise too become deluded when subservient to the force of the previous Karmans.

पश्यंतोऽपि न पश्यंति शृण्वाना बधिरा यथा ॥ यथांधा मानुषा लोके मूढाः पापविमोहिताः ॥ २४ ॥
pazyaMto'pi na pazyaMti zRNvAnA badhirA yathA ॥ yathAMdhA mAnuSA loke mUDhAH pApavimohitAH ॥ 24 ॥
They do not see even when they gaze at it; even while listening they are no better than deaf. Deluded by sins they are like blind men in the world.

वेदाहमेतं पुरुषं महांतमादित्यवर्णं तमसः परस्तात् ॥ तमेव विदित्वातिमृत्युमेति नान्यः पंथा विद्यते प्रायणायः ॥ २५ ॥
vedAhametaM puruSaM mahAMtamAdityavarNaM tamasaH parastAt ॥ tameva viditvAtimRtyumeti nAnyaH paMthA vidyate prAyaNAyaH ॥ 25 ॥
I know the great Puruṣa of the colour of the sun beyond all darkness. By knowing him alone can one surmount death. There is no other path to go.

एष ते कथितः सम्यक्तेजसो विधिरुत्तमः ॥ कालं जित्वा यथा योगी चामरत्वं प्रपद्यते ॥ २६॥
eSa te kathitaH samyaktejaso vidhiruttamaH ॥ kAlaM jitvA yathA yogI cAmaratvaM prapadyate ॥ 26॥
Thus the excellent mode of Yoga of the fire has been explained to you, how the Yogin conquers death and attains immortality.

पुनः परतरं वक्ष्ये यथा मृत्युर्न जायते ॥ सावधानतया देवि शृणुष्वैकाग्रमानसा ॥ २७ ॥
punaH parataraM vakSye yathA mRtyurna jAyate ॥ sAvadhAnatayA devi zRNuSvaikAgramAnasA ॥ 27 ॥
I shall now explain a greater method of Yogic practice to ward off death. O goddess, listen with attention and concentration.

तुरीया देवि भूतानां योगिनां ध्यानिनां तथा ॥ सुखासने यथास्थानं योगी नियतमानसः ॥ २८॥
turIyA devi bhUtAnAM yoginAM dhyAninAM tathA ॥ sukhAsane yathAsthAnaM yogI niyatamAnasaH ॥ 28॥
The fourth, O Devi, is the fourth of all beings, the yogis and the meditators. The yogi should sit in a comfortable seat with a fixed mind.

समुन्नतशरीरोऽपि स बद्ध्वा करसंपुटम् ॥ चञ्च्वाकारेण वक्त्रेण पिबन्वायुं शनैश्शनैः ॥ २९॥
samunnatazarIro'pi sa baddhvA karasaMpuTam ॥ caJcvAkAreNa vaktreNa pibanvAyuM zanaizzanaiH ॥ 29॥
Even with his body raised he tied his hands together He slowly drank the air with his mouth in the shape of a spoon.

प्रस्रवंति क्षणादापस्तालुस्था जीवदायिकाः ॥ ता जिघ्रेद्वायुनादायामृतं तच्छीतलं जलम् ॥ ३०॥
prasravaMti kSaNAdApastAlusthA jIvadAyikAH ॥ tA jighredvAyunAdAyAmRtaM tacchItalaM jalam ॥ 30॥
The life-giving waters in the palate flow instantly They should smell the nectar of the wind and the cool water.

पिबन्ननुदिनं योगी न मृत्युवशगो भवेत् ॥ दिव्यकायो महातेजाः पिपासा क्षुद्विवर्जितः ॥ ३१ ॥
pibannanudinaM yogI na mRtyuvazago bhavet ॥ divyakAyo mahAtejAH pipAsA kSudvivarjitaH ॥ 31 ॥
By drinking it daily the yogi will not be subject to death. He had a divine body and was very effulgent and free from thirst and hunger.

बलेन नागस्तुरगो जवेन दृष्ट्या सुपर्णस्सुश्रुतिस्तु दूरात् ॥ आकुंचिताकुंडलिकृष्णकेशो गंधर्वविद्याधरतुल्यवर्णः ॥ ३२॥
balena nAgasturago javena dRSTyA suparNassuzrutistu dUrAt ॥ AkuMcitAkuMDalikRSNakezo gaMdharvavidyAdharatulyavarNaH ॥ 32॥
In strength he becomes equal to an elephant; in speed he vies with a horse; he has the keen sight of Garuḍa; he can hear from a distance. He has dark curly ringlets of hair. His complexion is as fair as that of Gandharvas and Vidyādharas.

जीवेन्नरो वर्षशतं सुराणां सुमेधसा वाक्पतिना समत्वम्॥ एवं चरन् खेचरतां प्रयाति यथेष्टचारी सुखितस्सदैव ॥ ३३ ॥
jIvennaro varSazataM surANAM sumedhasA vAkpatinA samatvam॥ evaM caran khecaratAM prayAti yatheSTacArI sukhitassadaiva ॥ 33 ॥
He lives for a hundred years by the calculation of the time of gods. He attains equality with Bṛhaspati. By practising this Yoga he can traverse in the sky or any where he likes. He can always remain happy.

पुनरन्यत्प्रवक्ष्णमि विधानं यत्सुरैरपि ॥ गोपितं तु प्रयत्नेन तच्छृणुष्व वरानने ॥ ३४ ॥
punaranyatpravakSNami vidhAnaM yatsurairapi ॥ gopitaM tu prayatnena tacchRNuSva varAnane ॥ 34 ॥
O fair lady, I shall now explain another mode which is strenuously guarded even by gods. Please listen to It.

समाकुंच्याभ्यसेद्योगी रसनां तालुकं प्रति ॥ किंचित्कालांतरेणैव क्रमात्प्राप्नोति लंबिकाम्॥ ३५॥
samAkuMcyAbhyasedyogI rasanAM tAlukaM prati ॥ kiMcitkAlAMtareNaiva kramAtprApnoti laMbikAm॥ 35॥
The Yogin shall practise curving the tongue towards the palate. After sometime be can carry it to the uvula.

ततः प्रस्रवते सा तु संस्पृष्टा शीतलां सुधाम् ॥ पिबन्नेव सदा योगी सोऽमरत्वं हि गच्छति ॥ ३६ ॥
tataH prasravate sA tu saMspRSTA zItalAM sudhAm ॥ pibanneva sadA yogI so'maratvaM hi gacchati ॥ 36 ॥
When touched it begins to exude cool nectar. By drinking in this the Yogin attains immortality.

रेफाग्रं लंबकाग्रं करतलघटनं शुभ्रपद्मस्य बिन्दोस्तेनाकृष्टा सुधेयं पतति परपदे देवतानंदकारी ॥ सारं संसारतारं कृतकलुषतरं कालतारं सतारं येनेदं प्लावितांगं स भवति न मृतः क्षुत्पिपासाविहीनः॥ ३७॥
rephAgraM laMbakAgraM karatalaghaTanaM zubhrapadmasya bindostenAkRSTA sudheyaM patati parapade devatAnaMdakArI ॥ sAraM saMsAratAraM kRtakaluSataraM kAlatAraM satAraM yenedaM plAvitAMgaM sa bhavati na mRtaH kSutpipAsAvihInaH॥ 37॥
The tip of the tongue touches the tip of the uvula. The hands are clasped in the form of a white lotus. Drawn by him the nectar falls drop by drop. When he attains the great region he delights even the deities. This is the essential substance enabling one to cross the ocean of worldly existence, surmount all sins, cross the Kāla along with the star. He by whom the limbs have been drenched with the nectar never dies. He is devoid of hunger and thirst.

एभिर्युक्ता चतुर्भिः क्षितिधरतनये योगिभिर्वै धरैषा धैर्य्यान्नित्यं कुतोऽन्तं सकलमपि जगद्यत्सुखप्रापणाय॥ स्वप्ने देही विधत्ते सकलमपि सदा मानयन्यच्च दुःखं स्वर्गे ह्येवं धरित्र्याः प्रभवति च ततो वा स किञ्चिच्चतुर्णाम् ॥ ३८ ॥
ebhiryuktA caturbhiH kSitidharatanaye yogibhirvai dharaiSA dhairyyAnnityaM kuto'ntaM sakalamapi jagadyatsukhaprApaNAya॥ svapne dehI vidhatte sakalamapi sadA mAnayanyacca duHkhaM svarge hyevaM dharitryAH prabhavati ca tato vA sa kiJciccaturNAm ॥ 38 ॥
O daughter of the mountain, the earth possessing these four types of Yogins can bestow happiness on the entire universe. What a man creates in dream the Yogin is competent to create in heaven. This is only a part of what the four can do.

तस्मान्मंत्रैस्तपोभिर्व्रतनियमयुतैरौषधैर्योगयुक्ता धात्री रक्ता मनुष्यैर्नयविनययुतैर्धर्मविद्भिः क्रमेण ॥ भूतानामादि देवो न हि भवति चलः संयुतो वै चतुर्णां तस्मादेवं प्रवक्ष्ये विधिमनुगदितं छायिकं यच्छिवाख्यम् ॥ ३९॥
tasmAnmaMtraistapobhirvrataniyamayutairauSadhairyogayuktA dhAtrI raktA manuSyairnayavinayayutairdharmavidbhiH krameNa ॥ bhUtAnAmAdi devo na hi bhavati calaH saMyuto vai caturNAM tasmAdevaM pravakSye vidhimanugaditaM chAyikaM yacchivAkhyam ॥ 39॥
Hence the earth united with mantras, penances, Vratas, restraints, medicinal herbs and Yogic practice becomes lovable to men endowed with humility, polity and sacred virtues. The primordial lord of all living beings does not become shaken when associating with the four Yogins. I shall now explain in accordance with the injunctions the Chāyāpuruṣa (the shadowy person) who is called Siva.
