Brahmā said: Thus eulogised by the Gods, the Goddess Durgā, the mother of the universe, the destroyer of impassable distress, appeared in front of them.

She was seated in a wonderful divine gem-set chariot over which a soft cushion had been spread and which was decorated with tinkling ornaments.

कोटिसूर्याधिकाभास रम्यावयवभासिनी॥ स्वतेजोराशिमध्यस्था वररूपा समच्छवि ॥३॥
koTisUryAdhikAbhAsa ramyAvayavabhAsinI॥ svatejorAzimadhyasthA vararUpA samacchavi ॥3॥
She was shining with the brilliance of her limbs that surpassed even the lustre of a crore of suns. She was surrounded by a halo created by her own lustre. She was of symmetrical splendour.

अनूपमा महामाया सदाशिवविलासिनी ॥ त्रिगुणा निर्गुणा नित्या शिवलोकनिवासिनी ॥ ४ ॥
anUpamA mahAmAyA sadAzivavilAsinI ॥ triguNA nirguNA nityA zivalokanivAsinI ॥ 4 ॥
She was the unequalled supreme illusion, the beautiful wife of Sadāśiva. She had all the three qualities and was devoid of attributes also, she had been staying in the region of Śiva.

She was the mother of the three deities, Caṇḍī, Śivā, the destroyer of the distress of all, the mother of all supreme slumber and the redeemer of all her own people.

tejorAzeH prabhAvAttu sA tu dRSTvA suraizzivA ॥ tuSTuvustAM punaste vai surA darzanakAMkSiNaH ॥6॥
Śivā was seen by the gods through the power of huge column of brilliance. Again the gods eulogised her in order to have a sight of her.

अथ देवगणास्सर्वे विष्ण्वाद्या दर्शनेप्सवः ॥ ददृशुर्जगदम्बां तां तत्कृपां प्राप्य तत्र हि ॥ ७ ॥
atha devagaNAssarve viSNvAdyA darzanepsavaH ॥ dadRzurjagadambAM tAM tatkRpAM prApya tatra hi ॥ 7 ॥
Then Viṣṇu and other gods who were desirous of seeing her saw the mother of the universe there itself after receiving her favour.

बभूवानन्दसन्दोहस्सर्वेषां त्रिदिवौकसाम्॥ पुनः पुनः प्रणेमुस्तां तुष्टुवुश्च विशेषतः ॥ ८ ॥
babhUvAnandasandohassarveSAM tridivaukasAm॥ punaH punaH praNemustAM tuSTuvuzca vizeSataH ॥ 8 ॥
The dwellers of heaven were extremely pleased, they bowed to her again and again and particularly eulogised her.

devA UcuH ॥ zive zarvANi kalyANi jagadamba mahezvari ॥ tvAM natAssarvathA devA vayaM sarvArtinAzinIm ॥9॥।
The gods said: O Śivā, O great Goddess, O mother of the universe we gods bow to you, the destroyer of all distress.

न हि जानन्ति देवेशि वेदश्शास्त्राणि कृत्स्नशः ॥ अतीतो महिमा ध्यानं तव वाङ्मनसोश्शिवे ॥2-3-4-१०॥
na hi jAnanti devezi vedazzAstrANi kRtsnazaH ॥ atIto mahimA dhyAnaM tava vAGmanasozzive ॥2-3-4-10॥
O Goddess, neither the Vedas nor the sacred texts know you perfectly. Your greatness, O Śivā, is beyond the scope of speech and mind and cannot even be meditated upon.

अतद्व्यावृत्तितस्तां वै चकितं चकितं सदा ॥ अभिधत्ते श्रुतिरपि परेषां का कथा मता ॥ ११ ॥
atadvyAvRttitastAM vai cakitaM cakitaM sadA ॥ abhidhatte zrutirapi pareSAM kA kathA matA ॥ 11 ॥
Even the Vedas mention you, trembling with fright, by negating what you are not. What will be the matter in regard to others?

जानन्ति बहवो भक्तास्त्वत्कृपां प्राप्य भक्तितः ॥ शरणागतभक्तानां न कुत्रापि भयादिकम् ॥ १२ ॥
jAnanti bahavo bhaktAstvatkRpAM prApya bhaktitaH ॥ zaraNAgatabhaktAnAM na kutrApi bhayAdikam ॥ 12 ॥
Many devotees know the same after getting your favour through devotion. There is no cause for fear to the devotees who seek refuge in you.

vijJaptiM zRNu suprItA yasyA dAsAssadAmbike ॥ tava devi mahAdevi hInato varNayAmahe ॥ 13 ॥
O great Goddess listen to our submission which we, your slaves for ever, are going to explain.

purA dakSasutA bhUtvA saMjAtA haravallabhA ॥ brahmaNazca pareSAM vA nAzayatvamakaMmahat ॥ 14 ॥
Formerly you were born as the daughter of Dakṣa and were married to Śiva. You destroyed the great misery of Brahmā and others.

पितृतोऽनादरं प्राप्यात्यजः पणवशात्तनुम् ॥ स्वलोकमगमस्त्वं वालभद्दुःखं हरोऽपि हि ॥ १५ ॥
pitRto'nAdaraM prApyAtyajaH paNavazAttanum ॥ svalokamagamastvaM vAlabhadduHkhaM haro'pi hi ॥ 15 ॥
Being disrespected by your father, you cast off your body in accordance with your vow. You then went to your own world and Śiva became miserable.

न हि जातम्प्रपूर्णं तद्देवकार्यं महेश्वरि॥ व्याकुला मुनयो देवाश्शरणन्त्वां गता वयम् ॥१६॥
na hi jAtamprapUrNaM taddevakAryaM mahezvari॥ vyAkulA munayo devAzzaraNantvAM gatA vayam ॥16॥
O great Goddess, the purpose of the gods has not been completely carried out. The sages are agitated. Hence we, Gods, have sought refuge in you.

पूर्णं कुरु महेशानि निर्जराणां मनोरथम् ॥ सनत्कुमारवचनं सफलं स्याद्यथा शिवे॥ १७ ॥
pUrNaM kuru mahezAni nirjarANAM manoratham ॥ sanatkumAravacanaM saphalaM syAdyathA zive॥ 17 ॥
O great Goddess, please fulfil the desire of the God, O Śivā, so that the words of Sanatkumāra may be fruitful.

अवतीर्य क्षितौ देवि रुद्रपत्नी पुनर्भव॥ लीलां कुरु यथायोग्यं प्राप्नुयुर्निर्जरास्सुखम् ॥ १८॥
avatIrya kSitau devi rudrapatnI punarbhava॥ lIlAM kuru yathAyogyaM prApnuyurnirjarAssukham ॥ 18॥
O Goddess, incarnating again on the earth please be the wife of Rudra (Śiva) again. Carry on your sports in a fitting manner and let the Gods be happy.

सुखी स्याद्देवि रुद्रोऽपि कैलासाचलसंस्थितः ॥ सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनो दुःखं नश्यतु कृत्स्नशः ॥ १९ ॥
sukhI syAddevi rudro'pi kailAsAcalasaMsthitaH ॥ sarve bhavantu sukhino duHkhaM nazyatu kRtsnazaH ॥ 19 ॥
O Goddess, may Rudra too, the resident of Kailāsa be happy. Let all become happy. Let misery perish entirely.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इति प्रोच्यामरास्सर्वे विष्ण्वाद्याः प्रेमसंकुलाः ॥ मौनमास्थाय संतस्थुर्भक्तिनम्रा त्ममूर्तयः ॥ 2-3-4-२० ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ iti procyAmarAssarve viSNvAdyAH premasaMkulAH ॥ maunamAsthAya saMtasthurbhaktinamrA tmamUrtayaH ॥ 2-3-4-20 ॥
Brahmā said: Saying so, Viṣṇu and the other gods, full of loving devotion remained waiting silently and humbly.

शिवापि सुप्रसन्नाभूदाकर्ण्यामरसंस्तुतिम् ॥ आकलय्याथ तद्धेतुं संस्मृत्य स्वप्रभुं शिवम् ॥२१ ॥
zivApi suprasannAbhUdAkarNyAmarasaMstutim ॥ AkalayyAtha taddhetuM saMsmRtya svaprabhuM zivam ॥21 ॥
Śivā (the goddess Pārvatī) also became very pleased upon hearing the praises offered by the gods. Realizing the reason behind it, she then remembered her own Lord, Śiva.

उवाचोमा तदा देवी सम्बोध्य विबुधांश्च तान् ॥ विहस्य मापतिमुखान्सदया भक्तवत्सला ॥२२॥
uvAcomA tadA devI sambodhya vibudhAMzca tAn ॥ vihasya mApatimukhAnsadayA bhaktavatsalA ॥22॥
Then the goddess Umā (Pārvatī) spoke, addressing those celestial beings (gods). Smiling gently at the faces of the gods, full of compassion, she spoke, being ever affectionate to her devotees.

॥ उमोवाच ॥ हे हरे हे विधे देवा मुनयश्च गतव्यथाः ॥ सर्वे शृणुत मद्वाक्यं प्रसन्नाहं न संशयः ॥ २३ ॥
॥ umovAca ॥ he hare he vidhe devA munayazca gatavyathAH ॥ sarve zRNuta madvAkyaM prasannAhaM na saMzayaH ॥ 23 ॥
Umā said: O Viṣṇu, O, Brahmā, O Gods and sages who are free from sorrow and pain ye listen to my words. I am delighted undoubtedly.

चरितं मम सर्वत्र त्रैलोक्यस्य सुखावहम् ॥ कृतं मयैवं सकलं दक्षमोहादिकं च तत् ॥ २४ ॥
caritaM mama sarvatra trailokyasya sukhAvaham ॥ kRtaM mayaivaM sakalaM dakSamohAdikaM ca tat ॥ 24 ॥
My activities are conducive to happiness everywhere in the three worlds. The delusion of Dakṣa and other things were carried out by me alone.

अवतारं करिष्यामि क्षितौ पूर्णं न संशयः ॥ बहवो हेतवोऽप्यत्र तद्वदामि महादरात् ॥ २५ ॥
avatAraM kariSyAmi kSitau pUrNaM na saMzayaH ॥ bahavo hetavo'pyatra tadvadAmi mahAdarAt ॥ 25 ॥
I shall take a full incarnation on the earth. There is no doubt in this. There are many reasons for the same. I shall mention them with respect.

पुरा हिमाचलो देवा मेना चातिसुभक्तितः ॥ सेवां मे चक्रतुस्तात जननीवत्सतीतनोः ॥ २६ ॥
purA himAcalo devA menA cAtisubhaktitaH ॥ sevAM me cakratustAta jananIvatsatItanoH ॥ 26 ॥
Formerly, O gods, with great devotion Himācala and Menā rendered service to me in my life as Sati, like my parents.

इदानीं कुरुतस्सेवां सुभक्त्या मम नित्यशः ॥ मेना विशेषतस्तत्र सुतात्वेनात्र संशयः ॥ २७ ॥
idAnIM kurutassevAM subhaktyA mama nityazaH ॥ menA vizeSatastatra sutAtvenAtra saMzayaH ॥ 27 ॥
Even now they continuously render me service and Menā particularly (does so). There is no doubt about my becoming their daughter.

रुद्रो गच्छतु यूयं चावतारं हिमवद्गृहे ॥ अतश्चावतरिष्यामि दुःखनाशो भविष्यति ॥२८॥
rudro gacchatu yUyaM cAvatAraM himavadgRhe ॥ atazcAvatariSyAmi duHkhanAzo bhaviSyati ॥28॥
Just as you, Rudra too, desires my incarnation in the abode of Himavat. Hence I shall incarnate. That shall be the end of misery in the world.

सर्वे गच्छत धाम स्वं स्वं सुखं लभतां चिरम् ॥ अवतीर्य सुता भूत्वा मेनाया दास्य उत्सुखम्॥ ॥ २९ ॥
sarve gacchata dhAma svaM svaM sukhaM labhatAM ciram ॥ avatIrya sutA bhUtvA menAyA dAsya utsukham॥ ॥ 29 ॥
All of you return to your abodes. You shall be happy for a long time. After incarnating I shall give Menā full happiness.

हरपत्नी भविष्यामि सुगुप्तं मतमात्मनः ॥ अद्भुता शिवलीला हि ज्ञानिनामपि मोहिनी ॥ 2-3-4-३० ॥
harapatnI bhaviSyAmi suguptaM matamAtmanaH ॥ adbhutA zivalIlA hi jJAninAmapi mohinI ॥ 2-3-4-30 ॥
I shall become Śiva’s wife. But this desire is a great secret with me. Śiva’s divine sport is wonderful. It deludes even the wise.

यावत्प्रभृति मे त्यक्ता स्वतनुर्दक्षजा सुराः ॥ पितृतोऽनादरं दृष्ट्वा स्वामिनस्तत्क्रतौ गता ॥३१॥
yAvatprabhRti me tyaktA svatanurdakSajA surAH ॥ pitRto'nAdaraM dRSTvA svAminastatkratau gatA ॥31॥
From the moment my body, born of Dakṣa, was renounced, O gods, Having seen the disrespect shown by my father at the sacrifice, I went to my Lord (Śiva) at that ritual.

तदाप्रभृति स स्वामी रुद्रः कालाग्निसंज्ञकः ॥ दिगम्बरो बभूवाशु मच्चिन्तनपरायणः ॥ ३२ ॥
tadAprabhRti sa svAmI rudraH kAlAgnisaMjJakaH ॥ digambaro babhUvAzu maccintanaparAyaNaH ॥ 32 ॥
Since that time, my Lord Rudra, known as Kālāgni (the fire of time), Became a digambara (clothed in directions — naked) and remained constantly absorbed in thoughts of me.

मम रोषं क्रतौ दृष्ट्वा पितुस्तत्र गता सती ॥ अत्यजत्स्वतनुं प्रीत्या धर्मज्ञेति विचारतः॥ ॥ ३३ ॥
mama roSaM kratau dRSTvA pitustatra gatA satI ॥ atyajatsvatanuM prItyA dharmajJeti vicArataH॥ ॥ 33 ॥
Seeing my anger at the sacrifice, Sati (my former form) went there to my father, And, out of love and sense of righteousness (considering what was just), she renounced her body.

योग्यभूत्सदनं त्यक्त्वा कृत्वा वेषमलौकिकम् ॥ न सेहे विरहं सत्या मद्रूपाया महेश्वरः ॥३४॥
yogyabhUtsadanaM tyaktvA kRtvA veSamalaukikam ॥ na sehe virahaM satyA madrUpAyA mahezvaraH ॥34॥
Having left the abode that had become unworthy and adopting a supernatural appearance, Maheshvara (Śiva) could not bear the separation from Sati — who was my earlier form.

मम हेतोर्महादुःखी स बभूव कुवेषभृत् ॥ अत्यजत्स तदारभ्य कामजं सुखमुत्तमम् ॥ ३५॥
mama hetormahAduHkhI sa babhUva kuveSabhRt ॥ atyajatsa tadArabhya kAmajaM sukhamuttamam ॥ 35॥
On account of me he was much distressed. He put on an abnormal dress. Ever since he forsook the excellent pleasure of love.

अन्यच्छृणुत हे विष्णो हे विधे मुनयः सुराः ॥ महाप्रभोर्महेशस्य लीलां भुवनपालिनीम् ॥ ३६ ॥
anyacchRNuta he viSNo he vidhe munayaH surAH ॥ mahAprabhormahezasya lIlAM bhuvanapAlinIm ॥ 36 ॥
Hear further, O Viṣṇu, O Brahmā, O sages and O gods, the divine sports of the supreme lord Śiva, that protect the universe.

विधाय मालां सुप्रीत्या ममास्थ्नां विरहाकुलः ॥ न शान्तिं प्राप कुत्रापि प्रबुद्धो ऽप्येक एव सः ॥ ३७ ॥
vidhAya mAlAM suprItyA mamAsthnAM virahAkulaH ॥ na zAntiM prApa kutrApi prabuddho 'pyeka eva saH ॥ 37 ॥
Oppressed by the pangs of bereavement He wreathed a garland of my bones. Although He is the sole enlightened god He did not get peace anywhere.

इतस्ततो रुरोदोच्चैरनीश इव स प्रभुः ॥ योग्यायोग्यं न बुबुधे भ्रमन्सर्वत्र सर्वदा ॥३८॥
itastato rurodoccairanIza iva sa prabhuH ॥ yogyAyogyaM na bubudhe bhramansarvatra sarvadA ॥38॥
Like a non-god, like a helpless creature he roamed about here and there and cried aloud. The lord Himself could not distinguish between the proper and the improper.

इत्थं लीलां हरोऽकार्षीद्दर्शयन्कामिनां प्रभुः ॥ ऊचे कामुकवद्वाणीं विरहव्याकुलामिव ॥३९॥
itthaM lIlAM haro'kArSIddarzayankAminAM prabhuH ॥ Uce kAmukavadvANIM virahavyAkulAmiva ॥39॥
The lord Śiva did this just to show the behaviour of a love-lorn lover. He blabbered like a lover in despair due to separation.

वस्तुतोऽविकृतोऽदीनोऽस्त्यजितः परमेश्वरः ॥ परिपूर्णः शिवः स्वामी मायाधीशोऽखिलेश्वरः ॥ 2-3-4-४० ॥
vastuto'vikRto'dIno'styajitaH paramezvaraH ॥ paripUrNaH zivaH svAmI mAyAdhIzo'khilezvaraH ॥ 2-3-4-40 ॥
But really the supreme lord has no aberrations, is not distressed and remains unconquered. My master Śiva is perfect, lord of all and the controller of illusion.

अन्यथा मोहतस्तस्य किं कामाच्च प्रयोजनम् ॥ विकारेणापि केनाशु मायालिप्तो न स प्रभुः ॥ ४१ ॥
anyathA mohatastasya kiM kAmAcca prayojanam ॥ vikAreNApi kenAzu mAyAlipto na sa prabhuH ॥ 41 ॥
He is not tarnished by illusion. Of what avail are illusion, love and other emotions for Him?

Rudra, the lord, is anxious to marry me and hence my incarnation on the Earth at the residence of Menā and Himācala, O gods.

After performing a severe penance as His devotee I shall become Rudra’s beloved and then perform the work of the gods. This is truth, real truth, there is no doubt about it.

gacchata svagRhaM sarve bhava bhajata nityazaH ॥ tatkRpAto'khilaM duHkhaM vinazyati na saMzayaH॥45॥
All of you return to your abodes. Continuously worship Śiva. Undoubtedly your miseries will be quelled by His favour.

By the grace of merciful lord Śiva, you will achieve auspicious results. As the wife of that lord I shall be honoured and worshipped in the world.

Brahmā said: O dear, even as the gods were watching, Śiva, the mother of the universe, vanished after saying this and returned immediately to her world.

After making obeisance to the direction in which she went, the delighted Viṣṇu and others, sages and the gods, returned to their abodes.

O excellent sages, thus I have narrated to you the auspicious narrative of the goddess Durgā. It is always pleasing to men and it bestows worldly pleasures and salvation.

Whoever hears or recites this with concentration, reads or teaches this, will obtain the fruits of all desires.
